Pretty wine, and like its pinot sibling, this was called most often as Old World.

A super interesting wine to blind: the nose has strong herb, stone black pepper notes, and some meatiness, but at the same time, while evocative of Northern Rhône wines, this melange is distinct from Northern Rhône Syrah. When one samples the palate, the fruit feels too strong and stark and New World to hazard a Rhône guess. And yet, it also feels nothing like California syrah. Not Australia. If you haven’t had this producer before, this can be confounding to blind. The group agreed, regardless of style preference, that this was a well-made wine.

Despite the oroducer’s reputation for being miodern, it’s the Old World elements that show through here and make this my favorite of the flight over Cayuse and Arcadian Max - earth, herbs and generous but varietally correct fruit.

A touch of stem is discernible on the nose but it is subtle enough to lend interest to the boss without any off-putting greenness to the palate. Otherwise, pretty fruit and silky pinot texture are the stars here. Strikes me as not showing all it’s got yet but this got some votes as wine of the flight.

Damp earth and gorgeous but balanced fruit on the nose; poured blind, this got called as Burgundy moreso than California. Didn’t keep detailed palate notes but this is showing well.

A bit cloudy in color; damp earth and herb on the nose; tart red fruits on the nose and palate. Complex and delicious - delivers a lot of the same elements that I have liked about Dutraive

Consistent with the house style and the vineyard - lots of blackberry fruit flavors and aromas, black pepper. Starting to mellow out but still youthful and pretty primary.

Competent but foursquare claret. Some oak apparent on the nose; dark fruits, clean but unexciting international styled wine.

Still quite primary, showing dark cherry fruit and nice balancing acid. Tannins not too forbidding to permit a look at this wine, and the fruit and oak present here also makes this friendly to Cali cab lovers looking to branch out to Bordeaux.

Still plenty of life in this but I don’t see further improvement from aging for this wine. Palate is a bit savory at this point in its development and ultimately the wine is a bit more interesting than it is good. I believe the winemaking team views cab franc as the red that has the most potential for their sites and this wine probably supports that view. Perfectly fine and enjoyable but not exceptional.

Poured blind to our friends, one industry pro pegged this as “cool climate California pinot, made to be in a restrained style.” And that summed it up well - fruit was gorgeous, juicy and just ripe enough. Herbal notes on nose and palate showed slight influence from stems, in a proportion I liked.

Balanced, elegant and smooth. Exactly what you’d expect from a village Chambolle from this producer in a vintage like 2011.

Thankfully this wine has come around or my first bottle of it was an off bottle. This had typicity but rather than super lean, this wine showed with a bit of roundness but paired well with a seafood tower

Good solid MSD, with some earthy complexity. Could use some time before it will show like a 1er cru, but I paid a Village price for this, so no tragedy in having opened one.

Winner of our best bottle contest. Showing maturity with good balance between engaging fruit, judicious oak and good acid backbone. A touch oxidative as you’d expect given the producer and the age of the bottle, but actually shows younger than 17 years from vintage, with some notes of earth, dried leaves and spice adding to the complexity. Lovely. 92-93

In line with house style; ripe but not overripe fruit; does not suffer from overt stemminess as some Rhys pinots are. Very enjoyable and balanced.

To me, more obviously Rhône than the Fonsalettes poured with it. Has power and spice that will make this the best wine in the flight in the long run, but not yet.

Some found this flawed, but I don’t believe it was TCA - but there was a certain mustiness that did not keep the wine from being expressive. Thrown in to a flight to be the modern-styled foil against 89 Sociando and 95 La Conseillante, this was closer in style to its flightmates than one might expect, with earthiness and a touch of herb and graphite.

Shows a touch green but not flawed in my opinion, though tannins are noticeably strong still. Guesses ranged from nebbiolo to Pommard or Corton. Pretty nose. Decent palate, approachable despite the tannins.

Nice wine, very much in the house style for syrah, meaning that there is ripe (but not overripe) California fruit with juicy berry and plum qualities, with touchstones of Northern Rhone like exotic spice and herbs, as well as characteristic syrah black pepper. Better with a long decant, this wine has plenty of life left, so no hurry to drink up.

Tasty, with red berry fruit profile but a riper edge perhaps than a Copain bottling would’ve had, with some apparent oak. Crowd-pleasing style that would appeal to even cab drinkers, in the way that Rivers-Marie can be.
