2013 Marchesi Mazzei Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli Gran Selezione Chianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese Blend, Sangiovese

Should you be interested, I’ve uploaded info for this vintage which you can peruse at your leisure. 😉

≈110 min decant into a plastic, cylindrical pitcher which was then capped; NO visible sediment; Private Preserve used after Day 1.

N: Slightly closed; Earth, blk cherries, & toast with wafts of blk pepper which seem to increase over time

P: LM body; NICE, almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which stays in contact with the init frt as it seamlessly evolves into a LONG finish with a TANGY/swtness (65:35) to the FEW, marginally firming, very, VERY fine tannins. (For me it's MOSTLY the acidity providing the structure.) At least currently, on the austere rather than voluptuous side of the spectrum, I'D drink this food wine now & into '24. However, as the relatives weren't pleased, I'll likely hold our remaining bottles into at least early '22 in hopes that the acidity (the apparent "problem") at least somewhat loosens its grip. For me this did just fine with the night's Stuffed Pizza/Marinara (Chicago Style).
// Day 2: Both N & P very ~ Day 1's, & have held QUITE nicely, a (to me) balanced acidity once again being its calling card. For me personally this is a straight EXC (92, 93/100 using that metric), but I'll "officially" go EXC-/EXC because of the relatives not being fans, I suspect because of the acidity related "firmness". Also, should easily hold through '24. 13.7% ABV; [As of late Sept '20, wine-searcher still shows 2 sources @ $60 & $72].

Note: Also tasted on 3/17, 7/21, & 11/3/18, + 1/26/19.

I think I got it for 34 bucks from wine.com If you find in future someone selling it for lower price let me know. Wine searcher shows teh regular wine (not the gran selezione) in the same search results. Have you tried that one? Essentially the same wine name and vintage (but not the gran selezione) Maybe they are both similar as same vintage etc. (or not as maybe better grape/oak ageing)

1/13/22, 10:22 PM - Thanks. Yes, I have had the Ser Lapo Riserva 16 and Siepi 15. The former is definitely a very good value. I still have to fully appreciate the Siepi 15 as only sampled a bit of it. And was thinking of waiting for it to devewlop more.

Classic Nebbiolo for my first try......on the pnp the cork turned to dust and had to be extracted with care and in pieces and with a finer to prevent particles in the wine. Classic leather and rose petals on the nose, cherries on the palate with gentle spice notes. A waft of ether that changed to camphor over an hour. Chalky, dry mouthfeel with slight bricking to the color of this 20 yo wine. It remains consisten over 4-5 hours from decant til through the Jen/HMC tasting tonight. By the end of the glass a certain savory, smokiness emerged and was quite profound shoving the cherries to the background. Nice wine, would be even better with food.

5/20/21, 4:27 AM - You need to try the Ah-So to get the cork out my friend. It works beautifully. You can put the cork back if you so desire (of course air would have gone in but at least it can help putting cork back if you are travelling in car) and it wont' spill even if tilted. But importantly very good for old corks. Check out videos. I got a free one from Wine access may be you got it too. I did buy prior to that one also.

A solid wine at a good price point. But for the love of goodness why does the bottle weigh more than the wine itself?

Opened and decanted for 30 minutes. Typical dark purple in color with little clarity. Nose of red cherry, black fruits and vanilla.

The palate was fairly balanced with a spike in acidity. Medium+ body and loads of jammy fruits and oak imparted spices including vanilla. A fairly simple wine that was great with pizza. Drinking nicely and not a complex wine but a great mid week bottle.

Novice to this type so lucky to have enjoyed this! Bouquet of complex aromas including tar rose, clay pot with flavors of cherry, menthol/mint and leather, tomato and spice. Medium to full body and still quite tannic though very enjoyable at the same time with an excellent length. I have a case and this is my second glass but I have a feeling this won't last long in my hands as this is tempting. Near peak though probably has some room to evolve further. 92-93

I think they are very enjoyable and you can let it mature in your glass itself as you see the change from the first sip to the last and then for subsequent glass(es) you can decide . A pinot noir type glass might be good or an aroma collector and pour maybe 100ml so it decants in your glass. Maybe I should edit as by quiet tannic I probably meant that it still has ageing potential. I also tasted a cab from 2016 from Beringer today and may have been influenced by it as I was writing. That one is definitely going to the cellar. I would be hesitant in decanting the whole bottle for more than 30 minutes until you get a feel for this in the first few glasses as this is 20 years old and may not like more than an hour of decanting.

10/27/20, 11:26 PM - Agree with your comments wholly. Got it from Last bottle. Wasn't sure how it will fare as it came in Hot May and I am in Central Valley CA. Had a glass today and it is reasonable. I am going to try it with some flavorful food next.

Supple mouthfeel. Flavors of pear, honeydew melon, butter, mild oak/hazelnut. Really nice wine. Seems like this will age well too.

9/6/20, 7:39 AM - Hi, I am getting a couple of newton 2016 in 2 months (ordered but waiting till fall for delivery as hot weather). Would you say it will do well until end of 2021 as I plan to finish it by then or would you say they can do well until 2022 also. My plans got changed as someone gifted me 300 bottles recently as I went to pick up a wine cellar / cabinet. Bought these 2 cases as one day they were on sale for 22 bucks each lol
