Quite a different experience than my 10/2/16 tasting. This time I popped and poured, as opposed to decanting and waiting an hour last time. Now I find a mature cab which is not over the hill. Nice blackberry nose, and a balanced medium-bodied palate of dark fruit and ample acids. This is my last bottle, but if I had more, I would drink them soon.

12/5/16, 5:33 PM - It was if these two bottles were "separated at birth" and then stored under quite different conditions. However, I deliberately PnP'd this time to see if too much oxygen may have affected the first bottle. I would, indeed, liked to have seen these two side by side with one decanted and one not.

Dark chocolate and port like. Very rich wine, but there's some complexity and structure underneath. Not really my style but a solidly made wine. Correction: this is 55% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 20% cabernet franc

Double decanted; moderate sediment. First pour one hour later. A hint of browning at the edges of a medium ruby color. Flowery nose of dark fruit and tobacco. Medium bodied with more coffee and bell pepper on the palate than fruit. Ample acids and a long finish with smooth tannins. However, I'd enjoy this far more with more fruit on the palate, and if all the parts seemed to fit together better. Overall, this wine is not for me. But I'll taste agaian tomorrow and see if anything better develops.
Day 2: Still out of whack. Then it occurred to me that this particular bottle had been taken to a Florida beach last week, but brought back home unopened. On the return trip the car was parked for a couple of hours in the sun, and the off taste may have been the result of being cooked in the car.

9/9/15, 11:44 AM - On day 2, the wine is unchanged and still lacking much fruit. This is my third bottle, but I didn't make notes on either of the first two. However, I think I would remember if the first two had been this poor. I have eight more bottles (all purchased at auction last year), so I plan to open another bottle later today and to drink immediately after opening.

9/9/15, 2:02 PM - Opened a second bottle today and posted changes to my earlier note and added a new note today. I was wrong about this wine's source; I bought a case of this wine directly from Zachys in 2004 as an advance order. It's been in my 55F cellar ever since receipt in 2007. The only problem with this wine was my mishandling pf the first bottle, as my tasting notes detail.
