2000 Château Calon-Ségur St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend
Seems to be on good path but this is no where near ready. Tight and tannic (admittedly it got little air time). The fruit is fresh and vibrant.

11/25/21, 7:54 AM - If you have enough, try a long decant (of course, always possible it could close up more with extended air) to enjoy the youthful fruit. But I think it’s pretty safe bet that better things to come.

I like this. On the nose fresh fruit. Color was a light gold. a medium finish. This wine felt like I was dinking a young chenin blanc.
The only down side was this wine is evolving closer to a desert wine.
  • VDLT Wine commented:

9/28/21, 10:09 AM - That's because it is practically a dessert wine. It has 70-80 grams of residual sugar. Try it with an aged Chevre or a not too stinky blue cheese.

Red
2007 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo
A nice bottle that behaved younger than I expected. Sustained, good fruit without any discernible development - although their were no apparent tannins. Kind of heavy on the dill flavor but very enjoyable.
  • VDLT Wine commented:

    3/30/21, 11:13 AM - Agreed.

Still enjoyable but fading away now. It's interesting how Clos de Bourg still has its purity, whereas this does not. On opening, it was spicy but still quite fresh, but the citrus fruits were rapidly replaced by slightly bitter honey.
  • VDLT Wine commented:

10/26/20, 6:54 AM - Maybe an off specimen? I wouldn’t expect this to be on last legs. I have an orphan 375, which I must have thought was moelleux, I don’t normally buy halves of dry wines. It was many years ago.

No detailed notes since doing this from memory. A surprisingly refined wine, good acidity and none of the flabbiness some Carignan wines suffer from. Had more a day later which showed more strawberry and less spice than before. Also, acidity was starting to become unbalanced after a day of air. So let’s say this is meant for relatively early consumption. Right now it should have about an hour of slow o before serving. Screams out for food accompaniment- aged manchego in our case. Classy. Great value.
Score: 92. Relative to expectations: ++

9/24/20, 4:23 PM - Did your bottle have much sediment? Mine was loaded and can’t say I call this being the case with previous bottles.

Red
2016 Christophe Pichon Cornas Allegorie Syrah
Proving that Cornas doesn’t have to be a rustic brute to be Cornas, this young but well-mannered Syrah is brambly, bacony and delicious. Structured but not overly tannic and quite energetic.
  • VDLT Wine commented:

9/9/20, 6:13 PM - Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for bringing my sloppy note to my attention. Corrected to say not overly tannic.

White
2009 P. Dubreuil-Fontaine Père & Fils Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Clos Berthet Chardonnay
Last bottle, and best yet. Fully mature, without seeming "old". Good toasty popcorn nose, full-bodied slippery mouthfeel with nutmeg allspice interest, and citrus lift. Complex, round, complete.

much better than the ones produced in this country. more complexity
  • VDLT Wine commented:

8/19/20, 12:42 PM - The Saint Jacques raises the complexity bar considerably higher

Dark purple in the glass.
Pronounced and large bubbles with overt aromas of earth, funk, and purple fruits. Still quite fresh and vibrant for being 11 years old, the juice is acidic and cutting on the front before segueing into bitter and earthy roasted beets, dark ripe plums and plum skins, along with just touch of fresh tarragon on the back end with the finish.

I can certainly see why this is not everyone’s favorite drink, but the Pineau D’Aunis comes across like a dry and serious Lambrusco.

If you like that idea, you’ll likely enjoy this wine quite a bit.
Based on this bottle, I found it to be a pleasant and frothy, dry, funky food wine and would gladly have purchased more of it to drink over the next couple of years or more.

Quite ripe on the nose - not roasted or overripe, but getting there.

Better balanced on the palate, but still a lot of in your face ripeness - you can tell this wine came from a hot vintage. But no real heat on the finish, so the wine does retain a sense of balance.

At least IMO, best to think about consuming this over the next 1-3 years.

Red
2016 P. Dubreuil-Fontaine Père & Fils Beaune 1er Cru Montrevenots Pinot Noir
Sight fruit cherry nose, dark color, good acidity, soft tannins, tannins first on the pallet then massive dark fruit, great length.
Very yummy, well balanced wine, very accessible
Just a pleasure to drink! To me a bargain Beaune 1er Cru
NO rating because I feel this will just keep getting better in the next few years and would like to see if this shuts down for a while as it ages
  • VDLT Wine commented:

6/3/20, 2:03 PM - Nice. In my experience, Montrevenots from this domaine tends not to shut down much.

After 2 days under argon, pungent cherry and less aggressive scents of dried tobacco, rose, peat. Taste was ripe cherry, a little vanilla. Very balanced between ample but soft tannins and high but not cutting acidity. Balance is the dominant impression here: a classic Barbaresco that isn’t the most attention getting, but excellent pedigree. Needs a few years (>5) in the cellar. Outstanding QPR.

2005 Château Lanessan Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend
This was excellent with our ribeye/duck breast dinner from Chachama Grill (curbside take-out). Pulled this because I have more. It is in a perfect place. Quintessential Bdx. Cedary old-fashioned nose was like a siren. Perfect balance in the mouth made me not want to swallow it (I did). Lightish without being lean; fruity without being jammy. Just cresting its drinking plateau. Last sip next morning was a delightful way to start the day. (WineauxJ--"Can we still get a case of this?")
  • VDLT Wine commented:

4/11/20, 7:42 AM - Thanks for note. Have some too. My Lanessan experience is that the longer you wait, the better.

In a good drinking window now, but wouldn’t let it cellar past another year. Light - medium body, some black cherry and blackberry, tea, touch of pepper and spice. Fairly acidic, though not out of balance yet. Overall a pleasant Chianti. Thanks for sending VDLT.

Green olives with plummy red fruit, exactly as expected. What was unexpected was the failure to persist and get fuller in the glass--it went the other way. Did I miss the window?
  • VDLT Wine commented:

3/29/20, 5:42 AM - More likely the window hasn’t opened yet.

Pineau d'aunis is one of my favorite grapes, so I was very excited to try this sparkling red. It's labeled as demi-sec but the residual sugar doesn't stick out at all here, it comes across as rather dry -- like a dry Lambrusco or Gragnano if it was made from our favorite Loire grape. The nose is heavenly and smells like a lovely spicy, earthy pineau d'aunis with typical celery salt notes. The palate is a bit quiet in comparison but has a nice earthy, slightly chewy structure derived from acid and mildly scratchy tannins. I'm sure this would be lovely with charcuterie.
I'm not sure what the winemaker's intention was here, but it's a cool wine and one I'm happy to have a few more bottles of, esp at less than $17 per bottle.
Leftovers on day 2 are a touch more expressive, but now an unpleasant astringence clamps down on the finish. Based on this I'd recommend to give these a brief slumber and then drink away.

Tasted at the Barolo and Barbaresco World Opening Tasting Event in NYC. Traditionally styled made with long maceration and aged in botte grande. Nicely balanced with cherry, charcoal and licorice underdones. Solid and pretty easy to drink. Enjoyable now with a decant.

2000 Château Léoville Barton St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend
Much like the recent 1990, a textbook example of a quality Médoc. Brilliant nose and a really lovely, full, lush body. But the flavors are still somewhat reticent. Should be fine in time.
  • VDLT Wine commented:

6/30/19, 12:44 PM - The wine wasn’t dumb, just relatively young. I consider it naturally and appropriately on its maturity path.

Decent but modernish and a bit spoofy. Drinkable but not the Chantegrive I remember.
  • VDLT Wine commented:

2/1/18, 10:58 AM - Short for spoofulated, refers to a wine that is stylized (as opposed to artisanal), low acid, fruit forward and lacking subtlety. In perspective, I have historically liked this Château and even liked this vintage 5 years ago.

White
2007 Quinta da Muradella Monterrei Gorvia White Blend
At George Martin, an interesting hybrid Galician. The obvious oxidation note suggests LdH Gravonia but the fruit remains strong and acidic like Godello or Albarino. Maybe a bit past prime but enjoyable (though not complex) with grilled sea bass and shrimp.
  • VDLT Wine commented:

1/25/18, 8:55 AM - I have no idea why I referred to it as hybrid!?
