White - Sparkling
2004 Dom Pérignon Champagne Champagne Blend
A bit funky on the nose. The palate is all dom with a surprisingly soft mousse but with intense yellow orchard fruit and great acidity. Young but pretty good.

10/2/15, 11:46 AM - We mowed through a lot of stuff last night. The salon was awesome :)

White - Sparkling
1999 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut Chardonnay
A blast of lime and brioche on the nose. The palate has deep yellow orchard fruit and some citrus notes. Some nutty notes add complexity. If I had a criticism I'd ask for a little more acidity but a very appealing wine.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2004 Château d'Yquem Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend
Typical Yquem nose with intense honey and apricot. The palate it loaded with yellow fruits honey and sweet nectarine. It doesn't have the acid of a great Yquem but some time should mellow out the sweetness some. Might have been too warm.

8/17/15, 2:11 PM - If the two 1920s examples ive had are any indication...yes. The sweetness certainly mellows out with time. True for all non fortified sweet wines in my experience.

  • Uglypinga commented:

8/17/15, 6:36 PM - Dont know the chemistry of it but the sweetness certainly mellows or maybe gets hidden in sauternes over time. Same thing for auslesen though it could well be a function of other changes that make the sugar less aparent.

Red
2012 Boars' View Pinot Noir The Coast Sonoma Coast
On the first night the nose on this admittedly Pobegaed wine was reticent but the palate showed some intense fruit. Tonight, 24 hours after being open, the nose is full of pretty primary berries, hints of chocolate, and even a touch of mint. I readied myself for a huge palate and was surprised by somewhat restrained red and black fruit with some green notes and somewhat dusty tannins. Very young but not unbalanced. I get no heat in this whatsoever. Nice acidity too. Glad to have several bottles. Will wait at least a year to try number two. The name suits it.
  • Uglypinga commented:

4/13/15, 8:12 AM - Haha sorry. Its a Wine Berserkers thing. Mike Pobega pretty much wrestles boxes of wine from the ups and fedex guys to open bottles so opening a bottle too early has been coined "pobegaing" a wine.

Smokey wood on the nose. Some nectarine in there. The palate is a bit woody as well but there are some nice notes of nectarines and caramel. Too young
  • Uglypinga commented:

8/10/14, 5:36 AM - I know. We talked about it. But as much as I thought about some other way to describe the nose and flavor, wood was all I could come up with. Notice I did not call it oak. It was the first of 40+ wines last night so I was not going to think about it much, but the last time I had a white Rayas was with this same group and I thought the same thing. Go figure. Ps the wine was a bit too warm.

Red
2010 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin Grenache
Slightly awkward. The nose is interesting with chocolate, blackberry liqueur, and fresh rasberries. Changes a lot over two days. The palate is clean and fresh with white raspberry, some raw beef and chocolate. I think this will regain weigth and get deeper and fuller, as have other Chaupins for me.

2/25/14, 5:21 AM - Eh I was just checking in. I inadvertently bought this twice so I had nine bottles. More of a why not than a why yes ;)

Red
2009 Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard Sonoma Coast
Right off the truck this had a bunch of undissolved sulfur and was spritzy. Shook it three times and it popped three times. A mess in the glass. Day two there was nothing fruit wise and I thought it was shot. Day three finally shows the Marcassin I know and love. Great nose of coffee grounds cinnamon and plums. The palate is oh so smooth and balanced. That's right, balanced. Hints of pomegranate cherries and a touch of coffee. Great acid on this makes it clean and mouth watering. I really like these wines.
  • Uglypinga commented:

1/7/14, 9:53 AM - Yeah I thought it was secondary fermentation at first but the wine was fine after a while. They did get super cold on the way so maybe that had something to do with it? Who knows. All was fine in the end. Meadows hates and always has hated Marcassin.

  • Uglypinga commented:

2/3/14, 6:41 PM - Meh I don't like or dislike Meadows. He is entitled to his opinion. I think that these wines are far more balanced than they get credit for. In fact, that is why I like them so much. I'm glad not everyone loves them. It's hard enough to get them and they are expensive enough.
As for the spritz who knows. They were damned cold when I got them, maybe that had something to do with it. Either way the wine was awesome after a few days.

Red
2005 Sine Qua Non Syrah Atlantis Fe2O3~1a, b & c Central Coast
Amazing nose as always. Smokey BBQ sauce and deep dark fruits. The palate is thick and mouth coating with smokey beef, bacon and a petroleum note. Long and impressive. I love this wine. I usually find black pepper in this and it wasn't there this time.
  • Uglypinga commented:

12/16/12, 8:00 PM - I don't know that it's age related. Funny thing was I was thinking it and my buddy goes...where's the black pepper?

Red
2010 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend
Great berries and baking spices nose. The palate is full and intense with lots of acidity and verve. A little tight on the fruit definition but still a great young CDP.

12/7/12, 6:20 AM - I bought a few 1/2 bottles, this was one of them. I grabbed it because we had drank a fair ammount and went down to the cellar to grab an Yquem to cap off the night and my friend said, how about a little more red wine first? I had just unpacked these so they were sitting on top of one of my racks. The short answer is no, I did not decant, and no, I wont do it again until about a year from now. Delicious as the wine is, I robbed it of some potential and I have lots of bottles that are ready now...In fact, I moved the bottles to a less accessible place ;)

Red
2009 Hobel Wine Works Cabernet Sauvignon Engelhard Vineyard Napa Valley
Man what a great wine. Awesome nose of beef, dark fruits, cedar and smoke. The palate is velvety smooth with intense fruits that never go over the top. Mouth coating and delicious. Tannins to spare. Great.

12/7/12, 4:33 AM - I dont usually assign a number because I dont find them accurate. The previous note I wrote for it has a number because it was a blind tasting of 40+ cabs and I needes some way to keep track of my order for voting :) I did score it 95 then, ironically. If I think about it, id have to give this bottle a 96 because it showed slightly better than last time :)
