Color was not promising. However this is surely burgundy. Forest floor, leaves, mushrooms, olive tapenade, maybe a hint of sandalwood. A very slight residual sweetness lingers but this is completely tertiary.

Second pour after an hour in the bottle, a bit more substance and a bit sweeter. An intellectual and enjoyable wine.

Opened as a ringer for D’auvenay night. This 2000 Coche Cailleret continues to impress. Served alongside D’auvenay 1999 Narvaux, 2000 Folatieres, 05 Folatieres, and 09 Narvaux, the 2000 Coche Caillerets was only behind the 2000 Folatieres for my tastes. Nose was classic Coche and palate had the impressive length, weight, and balance of a perfect specimen. Slightly darker than the 2000 Folatieres the palate was a little richer but the D’auvenay had an additional layer of brightness and magic. Another great night and great showing.

Pop and pour. Outstanding color. Intoxicating Coche nose, a little flint but the delicious honey and ripe fruit cannot be masked. The palate is stunning. Blinded one would think 1er or grand cru. Outstanding depth and weight. Floral with a citrus quality between Meyer lemon and regular lemon. Maybe the faintest hint of vanillin. Who says white burgs can’t age.

Pristine cork that was easily removed with a regular corkscrew, no Durand needed. Color was an impressive clear dark ruby showing this was a perfectly stored bottle without signs of oxidative damage.

The nose is an enticing melange of sweet earth, leafs, spice, and Chinese medicinal herbs. The palate is tertiary but includes notes of dark chocolate, black truffle, and a lingering menthol sweetness. A 35 year old village that has aged better than the grand cru 85s that I’ve tried.

Served blind. Nice aroma of red berries, meat, game. Makes the think Gevrey. Young but open and plenty of fruit. Could be 14/15. Nicely balanced on the palate without too much oak. Didn’t guess the producer. Drinking well worth cellaring!

Superb. D’Auvenay did very well in 99 and this is no exception. Color is medium yellow. Nose is classic d’Auvenay. One whiff and you know the wine is correct and that it will be a good night. Tremendous weight and length for a Narvaux but as expected from d’Auvenay. It picks up a little acidity and complexity over 2 hours. Probably at the beginning of a long plateau.

A little odd funk on the nose that was reminiscent of my subpar 85 experience. Unlike the 85, this funk blew off to reveal a deliciously dense and textured wine. Lots of spice and dark fruits with a hint of mineral. One of the best and more open 02 reds I’ve had recently.

Medium gold color was a little concerning given the previous notes. However, one taste reassured that this was typical Coche and that it was not oxidized. Typical Coche nose and flint with a very rich and buttery mouthfeel. Fruit is ripe and the finish is persistent. I’m not one to time finishes but basically I could taste it the entire drive home. Hauntingly good. Very few wines better than 96 Coche.

I guess the secret is out. 92 Rousseau drinking very well and this CSJ is no exception. Just a very elegant and nicely balanced Rousseau CSJ with fine length and both sweet fruit and some tertiary characters. Not a powerhouse like say the 90 CSJ but more expressive than say 98 Chambertin and Beze.

Beautiful light straw color with a tinge of green. There is a nice reassuring whiff of the Coche signature. On the palate the fruit is riper and rounder than I would expect for 07 much less a 07 Coche. There is tremendous length though. Lacking some minerality and acidity of a top Meursault. Good but does not live up to the reputation.

I returned to this 2 hours later and my what a transformation. That 07 lemon acidity emerges and balances everything out. Goes from good to very good/excellent. Actually reminds me a of a cross between Roulot and Coche. It just continues to linger on the palate as I write this and I can’t bring myself to put this down.

Incredibly youthful. Can’t wait to see how these develop.

3 bottle from a case. This wine is a little riper than one would expect from the vintage. Maybe it’s the plot or maybe it’s botrytis. Definitely a bit more honey than I would expect from the Domaine. However excellent winemaking overcomes it for the most part with enough acidity to keep this delicious. This is an excellent drink for a sunny day or with roast chicken.

Clearly designed to drink now. Ripe, soft and easy going. Almost too much so. This faded on day 2. The Clavoillon is a big step up which more acid and structure. Drink this now and cellar the Clavoillon. Would not buy again even at the discount I received.

A big step up from the straight puligny. This had a hint of matchstick, bright lemon acidity, a hint of saline finish and some of that puligny white flower character. Much tighter structure and more balanced than the village. Where the village became flabby on day 2, this held up nicely. Very good!

Beautiful light yellow color and pristine cork and fill. A pleasant surprise given the vintage. Tasted and smelled like a Leflaive Pucelles from a vintage like 95 or 97...and I mean that as a compliment! A touch of sulfur on the nose. A rich and broad palate mist likely due to the vineyard and vintage. But also a bit of elegance which is why it reminds me of Leflaive Pucelles from the golden years (or pre-golden years if you will) of Leflaive. Lacks that bit of acid and mineral from a great year but very pleasurable with lobster tonight.

Just as the 2013 white burgs turned the corner so may the 2016s...or it could just be the producer. Nice reduction on the nose with plenty of acid to balance out the rich fruit. Nothing tropical here. Very much Coche-like. The balance and length continued to improve over 2 hours. Simply superb.

Synthetic cork. Does not appear to be DIAM.

Dark, earthy, sous bois, and nicely resolved. Completely tertiary with some soy, spice, and black tea notes. Fruit is starting to dry but holds up well through the night. In very good shape. About the thing wrong (my fault not the wine) is that it was drank next to an otherworldly 90.

Will have to make sure my next and last bottle is not drank next to the 90!

A stunning wine from beginning to finish. Popped and poured after being upright for a week. The aromas and palate is sheer balance and perfection as only Rousseau can achieve. One could argue just as good as the 90 Chambertin just different. One of those wines that are difficult to describe because the experience is so much more. Superlative.

5th and last bottle from a great lot of 5 from Crush. Provenance must have been perfect because this is drinking so well. Rich and honeyed with caramel and roast chestnut notes. Acid and effervescence still supporting the richness well. Drank half and put away to drink the second half an hour later and there is no decline. Just a long delicious plateau. I think provenance is really important with this vintage given the variable reports.

Given the comparisons to Chevalier Montrachet I was expecting power. Instead I got elegance and balance along with floral and mineral puligny character. This bottle is still young and needed 2-3 hours to slowly pick up weight and power. All the while it remains impeccably balanced, not unlike the 98 Coche Caillerets. I believe the best is yet to come and will try to wait another 5 years to open my next one. Lovely. Just lovely.

Darkest wine is the night next to the 98 Coche Caillerets, 99 d’Auvenay En la Richarde, and 00 d’Auvenay Folatieres. Also the most dense and ripe. The balance is there with the acidity and richness in play. There is fruit and rich honey notes but not leaning into botrytis. This continues to build throughout the entire 3 hours. Impressive power.

A shockingly elegant and pretty Coche open from the beginning. The delicious Coche signature is present and try as you may you cannot detect any vintage flaws. The more I drink Coche Caillerets the more I am convinced I like it better than the Genevrieres. A wonderful wine that was in the discussion for WOTN next to 92 Coche MP, 99 d’Auvenay Puligny En la Richarde, and 00 d’Auvenay Folatieres. An impressive showing.

This second bottle is even better than the first. Light yellow in color and plenty of sulfur and flint on the nose. Immediately the quality and super showing is evident. Fruit is bright with plenty of acidity. There is white mushroom and some light hazelnut aroma. Whereas the previous bottle held its ground, this bottle continued to improve with time. I don’t usually time or mention the finish but the fragrance and aroma lingers endlessly. A bit of honey not unlike the finest orange blossom honey emerges along with a hint of saline. A mind boggling showing. This bottle is at least as good the the 69 Charmes.

A remarkable medium yellow in color. Starts off as a pretty standard white mushroom and popcorn notes. There is a little bit of baked apple. No bad signs of oxidation. With about 20-30 minutes there is a hint of smokiness and white pepper similar to an aged northern Rhône. The fruit is a bit riper and more round compared to the ageless 69 Charmes. The acidity ratchets up with time. The finish is very persistent and lingering.

Bottle label is very moldy and the sediment is crusted against the glass. Quite possibly an original release or at the very least not a very recent release. These 60s Leroy really have aged well!

Pristine bottle from a cold cellar. This was showing younger than the bottle I had 2 years ago. Striking elegance but unmistakable DRC nose. The spice and red fruit aromas are apparent but there is something a little more. Almost black olive and savory in character along with a little earth. The palate is very pure and elegant. A quintessential DRC RSV.

This wine is in the zone. Stored in a cool cellar of impeccable provenance. At peak under these conditions. Straddling that zone between savory and sweet. On the noise classic DRC spice. On the palate there is a fine sweetness along with savory notes of black tea and soy. Another outstanding 92 red burgundy.

Nice color and fill so I took a chance. Medium gold in color.

There was nice honey and orange marmalade notes with enough lemon acidity to lift the finish. A nice drink, clearly mature but without apple cider or sherry notes. It did not decline or improve over the course of an hour. Paired nicely with scallops with fennel cream and Dover sole.

Rousseau is Rousseau. This is probably one of the best 95s I’ve had. Dark fruited with the 95 signature but not clumsy. This has the elegance of Rousseau in a tough vintage. Almost secondary in profile with some spice, savoriness, spice, and mineral streak. Refreshes nicely with a blue cheese palate cleanser. Drinking well. I don’t see it improving or declining but could very well be mistaken in the former. Oddly enough shared some similar characteristics with the 02 Truchot Clos Sorbes.

Surprisingly accessible. Not nearly as tart as the 11 Caillerets or Meursault. There is plenty of acid to be sure but also enough fruit to balance it out. Drinking well now but also with plenty plenty of room for improvement. Last classic vintage of Coche IMO.

Who says there is no value in burgundy? $50 wine with age drinking in the zone. Very balanced bright red fruit. Some tart cranberry with a nice streak of mineral. No telltale Leroy spice but also no oak and nicely integrated. Enough sweet fruit and structure to elevate it above its Bourgogne designation. I would guess Vosne Village but who knows where this is from. Drinks nicely with garlic and thyme roasted chicken. Can’t ask for much more than this on a Tuesday.

This is a powerful Corton Charlemagne. The 96 acidity is very prominent. There is not as much fruit or depth as the 04 that we had a few months ago. However the oak on this was far more integrated and not noticeable. There is a fine mineral streak through this great wine. On any other night this has a shot at WOTN. Tonight it lacked the complexity and nuances of the Coche and even the Roulot. Still, a great drink.

A beautiful medium gold color similar to the 86 Coche CC to indicate this was indeed a properly stored bottle. Again, the 86 botrytis is apparent. On the palate the fruit is rich and ripe and there is incredible length and power. The wine continues to improve over the next 3 hours picking up more acidity and precision. A rare rare treat and I doubt I will see this beautiful wine ever again.

Wow from beginning to finish. This started off with the classic Coche aroma of flint that was less prominent on the 86 CC. On initial sip it was perfect in every way: the fruit, the acid, the precision. Everything was perfectly integrated, extremely elegant, and nuanced. A wine that makes you vow not to open any more Coche MP prior to its 30th birthday (knowing that you will fail miserably and happily). The greatness of it is only highlighted by drinking it next to other great wines. Not much else to say except that it’s a 100 point wine if there ever was one.

The honey and botrytis of 86 was apparent as was with the 86 Roulot MP. There is that long elegant floral finish that you get with Coche Corton Charlemagne. Initially a little behind the 89 Coche MP due to the weight and slight lack of acidity and focus. However, over the next 3 hours it continued to improve becoming more refined and elegant with each repour. By the end of the night, it was as good and maybe even better than the 89. Hard to say as both wines were flawless tonight and showcasing their vintage and vineyard perfectly.

I’m generally not a fan of this vintage. Even great producers have faltered. However this is a very good bottle. It has a surprising amount of tannins and structure. There is plenty of sweet fruit and just a faint hint of underripe green note. A little spice with meat and game notes. I believe this has some upside yet and the longevity may be underestimated. A well priced Easter egg off a restaurant wine list.

I’m starting to think/understand that these Raveneau need 10 years minimum to show their potential. 2 years ago 09 Chablis were awkward and dull. Now this is pure saline. I agree with the below note that one would be hard pressed to guess 09. The fruit is not heavy, in fact a little light with just a bit more heat than usual. An hour later a bit of floral and honey becomes apparent on the finish. Quite balanced and not even showing any signs of age. Great potential here.

Gosh these are drinking well now. Decanted for sediment this was initially a little too young next to the 97 Chambertin. However it also had more length and weight. With time that youthful awkwardness resolves and again becomes a delicious and caressing Chambertin. Just starting to enter it’s drinking window. Give this a good decant or 1-2 hours in the glass. Excellent.

Very much Chambertin in the nose with earth and meat aromas. On the palate dried cranberry and tart cherry fruit with a hint of sous bois. Not as clean as the 88 Jayer Beaumonts that I had a few months ago but the weightlessness and purity of that rises above a field of Rousseau Chambertin is quite remarkable. These wines are really about length and complexity without weight. WOTN tonight.
