Not a great showing - I've had some monumental bottles of this before, but this wasn't one of them. This one seems a little more mature and advanced than others I've had in the past. It's got a core of rich citrus and stone fruit that builds with air, plenty of honeyed and smoky developed notes around it, and while it's an excellent bottle of Riesling, it definitely seems to be missing a couple of gears compared to various other bottles I've had (especially on the finish, which feels a little thin and clipped).

WCC St. Julien (Cafe Capriccio, Albany, NY): [Double-decanted at 2:30pm.] Leather and blackberry nose. Abrasive on the finish. Should be showing better than this.

6/6/14, 6:03 AM - Thanks. I've had it many times. Always very good to great. I was surprised at this showing. It should have been one of the best wines that night.

1989 Barolo and Barbaresco Single Blind (I Trulli Restaurant, NYC): [Opened at 6pm.] Gorgeous black fruit and spice. Sweet in the mouth. A beautiful wine from a producer I had not heard of before.

2/13/14, 1:47 PM - You are correct, Wine-Strategies. I don't know where that name came from in CT. The bottle I had is the one pictured here. And the note from Eric Guido is from the same bottle. It is not a reserve or riserva of any kind as far as I can tell.

WCC: Totally Blind Reds (Bob's (chezfur)): [Double decanted for about 12 hours.] Big waxy nose characteristic of young Rhone wines. In the mouth, hot alcoholic and nasty.

Rare Wine Co's Giacosa Riserva Dinner (Del Posto Restaurant, NYC): Showing some secondary aromas in the nose. Explodes in the mouth. Amazing wine! Still young and tannic but so obviously great now and for the next 30 years. May be the the greatest Le Rocche del Falletto made. This is what Giacosa is all about: power and grace. Mind blown.

WCC Barolo & Barbaresco Blind (Yono's Restaurant, Albany, NY): [Double decanted around 5pm.] Classic Barolo. Big and complex with earth, mulch mushrooms. Stunning, with a long complex finish. Really a terrific bottle of Barolo with no sign of new oak remaining. Should continue to drink well for at least another decade.

Tasting at the Cantina Mascarello in Piedmont with la Mam Mascarello. The Mama introduced this as a wine of purity, very little oak, no toasting, pure terroir. Not bad given she speaks no English and we speak no Italian. Indeed it is. Traditional to the core, and although young (wine was opened 1 hour prior our visit) it still shows wwhat is great about Barolo. Big and long with presence yet very elegant and with fine nose. This is one to look for for the future. Simply great.

12/27/10, 8:38 AM - Not sure what you tasted, but this wine is made at the Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello winery by Mauro Mascarello.

Cantina Mascarello aka Bartolo Mascarello is run by his daughter, Maria Teresa Mascarello. They make only one Barolo from 4 vineyards. Perhaps that is the wine you had?
