Hearty dark fruit, heady nose, medium bodied. Simultaneously velvety and smooth on the palate, with dark fruit and a hint of olive wood, and lighter on its feet than I might have guessed given the heartiness. Quite fresh. We have a few more bottles and I don’t imagine they will improve much beyond how it was tonight.

4/30/2023 - Twowinechicks Likes this wine:

Dark ruby, brambly fruit, lighter to medium bodied, light as a feather yet layered with a finish that evaporates yet stays and stays. Hints of eucalyptus and resin—a testament to Gamay in the hands of talent.
Red
4/29/2023 - Twowinechicks Likes this wine:
91 points
Limpid red, vibrant dark berry nose, very slight funkiness/volatile acidity, lighter bodied and much clearer early on than over time (and what exactly explains that? I wonder). Hints of astringency on the finish - almost pine resiny - and that astringency hangs on for a good long minute or two. This is seriously gluggable juice. Not your everyday cru Beaujolais, that’s for sure!

I wanted to try this since I’m a huge fan of Daniel Bouland wines from Morgon, Cote de Brouilly and Chiroubles. Light straw gold, honeysuckle and melon on the nose, rounded and very easy going. Certainly better than party wine, yet not especially complex and hard to discern any sense of place—unlike Bouland’s cru Beaujolais wines, which have always been outstanding and clearly speak of specific terroirs.

4/27/2023 - Twowinechicks Likes this wine:
90 points
Ruby red, tarry nose, medium-bodied, dark fruits and a slightly puckery finish which, interestingly, is not at all sharp as it evaporates, and it hangs on for a good long while. Another reason to trust the entry leek wines of very good producers.

4/21/2023 - Twowinechicks Likes this wine:
92 points
Translucent ruby red, dark berry fruit and tarry nose at first, decanted for a bit, lighter to medium-bodied, smooooooth (not a typo), vibrant with enough acidity to balance the grippy yet silky tannins, and better each sip. Waiting a decade isn’t easy but wow! For someone who travels among Vajra’s Barbera offerings far more frequently than among the Barolo offerings, this is a potent reminder that good producers’ entry level wines are but a hint of what the better wines can be.

4/17/2023 - Twowinechicks Likes this wine:

Light yellow straw color, slightly musty aroma with hints of citrus and melon,, medium-bodied, rounded edges. Pleasing mouthfeel, enjoyable, more interesting than a simple quaff yet very hard to pin down in terms of geography nor others specifics.

Light gold, lemon curd and wet stone on the nose, perfectly balanced with lemon, mineral, and a hint of creaminess. I’m just sorry this was our last bottle!

Opaque purple red, blackberry/cassis notes, medium-bodied, then boysenberry and brambly fruit. A bit more heat than I remembered (it reads 14.6%) and still quite tasty.

Slightly murky ruby red, hint of volatile acidity initially, some mushroom-y earthiness, and deliciously fruity and funky. Not everyone’s cup of Beaujolais but I love this wine!

Light honeyed gold, lychee nose, medium-bodied, and like drinking luscious silk with a minerally finish. Great mouth feel, I am only sorry that we just bought two bottles!

This was a gift that we had forgotten about, and decided to try. Perhaps many years too late—high high heat, primarily alcohol on the finish. Fruit long gone. Quite disappointing!

Go-to Chablis, light gold, lighter-bodied, plenty of salinity and minerality yet perfectly balanced at the same time. Very consistent from one tasting to another.

Dark ruby red, luscious currant and cinnamon nose, medium bodied, hearty, smooth. Each sip beckons the next, and it is very easy to do!

Dark violet/red, nearly opaque, savory olive and brambly nose, medium-bodied, tannins completely integrated, perfectly balanced, a finish that evaporates with residual dark fruit and meaty notes. We had this with a Bo Kho stew, a lovely combination. We tasted this initially at a wine tasting maybe 12? 15? years ago and bought a case of Jaboulet wines then, only a few of which have not been drunk!

3/16/2023 - Twowinechicks Likes this wine:

Lighter ruby red, lighter-bodied, plenty of fresh red fruit and high acidity, with a pleasant piney finish. Not the best vintage I’ve tasted of their wine although enjoyable as a lighter quaff.

Honeyed white, luscious lychee nose, and medium-bodied with legs to beat the band-wow does this have major viscosity! And laced with a steely minerally finish following a waxy and velvety coating of the palate with white fruit notes and quite firm structure. We brought this back from a trip to Paris last summer and are deeply disappointed we only brought one bottle!

Ruby red with translucent rim, spicebox and currant notes, lighter-bodied-practically weightless!, hints of pepper and spice and a very long finish that evaporates, leaving an almost resin-y sensation that keeps traveling on and on. And over time, there are violet pastille notes that grab your attention. This just gets better and better.

3/5/2023 - Twowinechicks Likes this wine:

Dark red, almost opaque, medium-bodied, cassis notes laced with minerality and structure yet delicate and reserved at the same time. I think this could handle sleeping for a while longer but it is so delicious now one must ask: why wait?

Dark red, almost opaque, slightly vegetal and woodsy, cedar-y and tobacco-y nose, yet still fresh. Medium-bodied, a hint of astringency on the finish that balances quite nicely with the woodsy notes. I was worried that this was too “mature” but fortunately nothing a bite of brebis couldn’t handle!

We brought this back from a trip to Chile a few years ago (pre Covid) and have no recollection of what it cost and why we brought it back. Dark ruby red, confusing nose that almost seems to suggest high heat with some vegetal notes, medium-bodied, and the high alcohol discerned on the nose is revealed. Pretty disappointing.

Dark violet red, resin-y nose, medium-bodied, black, plenty of vibrant acidity and a pleasing (if a bit astringent) finish.

2/28/2023 - Twowinechicks Likes this wine:

Dark ruby red, medium-bodied, slight funkiness on the nose, lots of fruit up front, and easy to glug glug glug initially, then seems to lose its structure with time. Tasted adjacent to Daniel Bouland Morgon Bellevue 2019, which started out much more tightly wound, then relaxed into generosity. The 100% started out with a bang and fizzled out 😔.

Dark red, hints of ruby light. Medium-bodied, strict at first, opening up to black fruits, a bit of astringency that helps keep the finish going, sweet tannins, plenty of structure to age. Worth waiting a bit before trying again.

Bright clear red, cinnamon and red fruits on the nose, medium-bodied, lots of acidity that evaporates with a pleasant astringency. This could use more time.

Bright red, floral nose, medium bodied, a bit of volatile acidity that sort of fades away. Good fruit yet it doesn’t quite come together. Perhaps a bit more time!

Dark red, muted nose with hints of cinnamon and balsam, lighter- to medium-bodied, plenty of vibrant acidity and a long finish that starts on the astringent side and eases into memory. Worth chewing on. Yum.

2/23/2023 - Twowinechicks Likes this wine:

Bright ruby red, restrained nose of balsam and pine resin, lighter- to medium-bodied, very long finish with some astringency that is more pleasant than initially expected. This could sit a while longer before we try the next bottle!
Red
2/19/2023 - Twowinechicks Likes this wine:

Not quite ruby-red, tinge of brown at the edges, a bit cloudy, garrigue and briar notes on the nose, medium-bodied, and not as young or fresh as it once was. Prunier than expected. And it still is hairy enough to spur near-immediate bursts of chest hair!
Red
2/16/2023 - Twowinechicks Likes this wine:

Dark red, muted nose with hints of cinnamon, medium-bodied, enjoyable yet short on the palate, not much complexity. This wine has been more interesting in prior vintages. We’ll be happy to drink it, not disappointed that we have only a few bottles remaining.
Red
2/14/2023 - Twowinechicks Likes this wine:

Glistening ruby red, hint of translucence at the edge, cinnamon and spice-box notes, vibrant acidity, well-integrated tannins, nice balance. Not sure this will improve much from here.

2/12/2023 - Twowinechicks Likes this wine:

Opaque black-red, graphite and balsam nose, medium-bodied, and (pleasantly) still sufficiently fruity to be well integrated. A tad muddy, although not enough to detract from an enjoyable and very hearty bottle. Lots of sludge at the end. Not quite the evel suggested by a WA review a number of years ago, but quite good all the same.

Bright ruby red, muted dark berry nose, medium-bodied. Disappointingly dull; fruit had subsided, and not nearly as interesting as prior tastings would suggest. I don’t consider Hirsch to be “party wine” but rather more special and interesting, and this bottle was “meh” — if I had been served this at a large social gathering it would have been okay, but not what we expected.😔

Blueberry-purple color, medium-bodied, cassis and a bit of VA on the nose (which didn’t dissipate completely even when opened the day before). Enough earthy funk to make an interesting wine even more intriguing. The finish simply travels on and on, savory and sweet, balanced, delicious. So glad we have several more of these!

Clear dark red, medium- to full-bodied, black fruit and a touch of spice and vanilla on the nose, well-integrated tannins, quite smooth. The alcohol (nearly 15%) isn’t noticeable at first but more apparent over time. All in all, another delicious Delille.

Cork broke while opening, so we decanted it (we may well have decanted anyway). Dark ruby red, notes of balsam, cedar, hints of oak/vanilla, and spice. Medium bodied, still has plenty of fruit, and all nicely integrated, quite smooth, albeit a bit muddy. The alcohol becomes more predominant over time, leaving a sharper note on the finish.

The cork broke as we tried to open the bottle, yet it was still clear, dark ruby red, and redolent of eucalyptus, medium-bodied. Very smooth and dry, with a somewhat puckery finish. Quite possible that we waited too long!

Purple-red, a little funky nose/volatile acidity when just opened, medium-bodied, and then funkiness dissipated into sweet ripe black fruit. Very quaffable! This was suggested by a shop owner in Paris when I was seeking out wines unlikely to be available in the US and we brought it back. Dee-licious!

Decanted when cork broke… yet completely clear and fresh. Dark ruby red, woodsy balsamic nose that opens to heady floral notes over time. Smooth, smooth, smooth black/cassis fruit with a hint of spice and seamless mouthfeel, taste, and finish (and why don’t we drink Barolo more often, we asked ourselves?) Wow.

Dark ruby red, red forest-y fruit on the nose, medium-bodied. Very chewy with a long finish that evaporates leaving minerally and yet also dusty notes. The first of the Bouland 2019s we’ve tasted, and this only deepens my appreciation of what is to come! [We have another 17 bottles!]

Disappointing, although I am surely to blame for holding onto this for too long. Sherry-like golden hued, nutty on the nose, and very oxidized. Decanted after the initial taste in hopes that the wine would improve with air. Sadly, no. A lesson to go through the cellar and drink things well before the approximate end-of-drinking-window range!

Brought over by friends who wanted to share with an appreciative audience (that would be us!) clear ruby red, medium bodied and juicy, hearty red fruit on the nose, with hints of cinnamon and very elegant smooth tannins. Harmonious from start to finish.

Bright ruby red, strawberry and balsam nose, medium-bodied, and spice-box notes on the palate. A tad sharp on the finish, though not unpleasantly so, and then the sharpness melts into a lingering cinnamon and slightly puckery aftertaste. We have 5 more bottles and will look forward to trying this again a year or so from now.

Medium red, tightly wound at first, then tarry and red fruit on the nose, beautifully balanced and complex. Could sleep longer but alas, it was our last bottle! Tasted in conjunction with a much younger wine, Le Pianelle Bramaterra 2016, and it was tough to say which one we liked more!

Bright ruby red, with a very faint translucent edge. Slow to present its aromatics, with hints of spice and woodsy notes at first, then opening up to become more floral. On the palate, smooth, silky, fresh, luscious, dark fruit and completely harmonious. Tasted with a Vietnamese stew Bo Ko and paired with the Abelsani, same year,, which was a bit more structured and just as compelling. What a holiday treat!

Bright ruby red, with a very faint translucent edge. Piney resin that almost reads sharp and angular yet a completely different experience on the palate: smooth, silky, fresh, luscious, hints of licorice and seamless. Tasted with a Vietnamese stew Bo Ko and paired with the Ovello, which had more dark berry fruit and was just as compelling. What a holiday treat!

Dark opaque red, ceda, leather, and tobacco notes on the nose, still fresh and astringent, yet muddy, and much more side-to-side than full palate even with a long finish that practically evaporates leaving an astringent coating that somehow remains pleasant. It doesn’t taste too old at all, remarkably fresh, and not as multi-dimensional as I had hoped.
