Pretty ruby garnet color, opaque and nice clarity. Smells are blackberry, currant, dry leaves, wet stone, and peppery hints. The tatstes are currants, cola, blackberry, sour cherry, earth, stony minerality. Tannins are modest and the finish is dry and spicy and notable heat.

The colors are garnet to brick on the edge, good clarity, and translucent. The smells are meaty, olive, raisni, dill, and cedar. The tastes are dark chocolate, cedar, olive, leather, sour cherry. The finish is cedary and lengthy and the tannins are resolved.

Garnet color, some opacity, and some brick hints at the rim. The aromas are crushed cherry, sweet tobacco, plum, leather, and currants. The tastes are sour cherry, brown sugar, vanilla, tobacco, and slightly tart red fruit. This wine is light on the palate and complex.

Zwonky tannins and florid notes on the ether. This bottle could languish indeterminately in dank corners whilst gathering grey streaks of wisdom in it's mane of wild coarseness. Reminiscent of a fine Dornish vintage. - For Doug

The color is pink copper is clear and limpid. The smells are floral, mineral, honeyed notes, pear, salinity, and hints of cherry. The tastes are grapefruit, light cherry, sea salt, tart citrus, and wet stone. The finish is crisp and zingy.

The bubbles are numerous, tiny, and streaming in seeming perpetuity from bottom to top. It is frothy on the pour and the color is clear and straw gold. The smells are honey, hazelnut, butter, flowers, and yeasty aromas. The tastes are apple, pear, lime, ginger, honey, butterscotch, toast, with light shades of salinity. The mouth feel is creamy, weighty and the acidity is zingy. The finish is lengthy and the bubbles seem to sizzle on the palate. This wine is hedonistic and offers great value.

Garnet to ruby color and salmon to the edge with dense color that is barely translucent. The aromas are raspberry, cinnamon, cherry, flowers, light pepper, red licorice candy. The tastes are cherry, sweet spice, cinnamon, raspberry, sweet vanilla, and hints of earth. The finish was sweet and delicious and the tannins were dusty fine and ripe. Medium weight on the palate and the acidity was notable and good.

Tasted non blind at a wine dinner.

Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout with tiny, full beading. Nose of sea spray, yellow pears and some vanilla. Flavors of lemon, yellow pears and green apples. Bright acidity, full bodied. Drink or hold.

bought this on the strength of the vintage and how good the 2007 was

The color is translucent garnet with brilliant clarity. The smells are perfumed, floral, damp earth, dark cherry and raspberry. The tastes are cherry, sweet spices, tart raspberry, sassafras, peppery spice, rose, and clove. The finish is lengthy and the body is modest. The acidity is nice and the tannins are like a very fine dust. Nice and complex.

5/25/13, 1:28 PM - Hello again Harley... I was expecting more tannin as well but so much for expectations! I have one more bottle so when I drink that in the future, it will be interesting to see how close my notes are to this one.

The color is is densely hued but translucent and garnet in color with bricking to orange hints at the rim. The smells are tobacco, espresso,
currants, blackberry, and vanilla. The tastes are tobacco leaves, currants, cedar, vanilla, sour cherry, hoisin, salinity, leather, and espresso. This is medium bodied with nice acidity and puckering, velvety tannins. The finish is lengthy and this is classically styled and complex.

Dark, plummy color, a bit rustic, lifted, and bretty. In fact, the nose is pretty much dominated by brett. It's not unattractive, for me, but I have a high tolerance for brett and actually kind of like it. Brings a fair amount of body and flavor for the price, though I'd probably go for Vieux Lazaret.
  • hackey37 commented:

3/29/13, 9:31 PM - Yup - my first bottle was loaded with brett too.

Appealing for its spiced cherry compote and fruit punch notes, this is nicely textured with fine grain tannins and good ripeness.

This is a real find. The combination of Malbec and Tempranillo is inspired. Mouth watering juicy red and black fruit, with some structure thrown in. Super dark color. The baked black fruit aromas literally jump out of the glass. The two grapes combine for a much more complete mouth feel than either alone. This wine is clean and well made, not particularly layered or complex. More bold, fruity, juicy, and tasty. A decent hit of oak. Balanced, but not overpowering acid. Soft. Some enhancing smoky and earthy flavors in the background. Fruity, smokey, mineral finish.
  • hackey37 commented:

12/7/12, 7:58 PM - I found some commonality with your note and mine... what struck me most was the "aromas literally jump out of the glass" - I could not agree more and made a similar comment in my note. Cheers!

- Ruby color - This wine has really changed. It's been a couple of years since we last tasted. Really smooth now. Might have lost a little of the power it once had. Still, this is the wine that started me on this journey.
  • hackey37 commented:

3/20/12, 7:56 PM - I looked up this wine and read your comment. I tried this in 2004 and I too got into wine because of this bottle. I ended up buying 2 cases of it and could not resist those bottles. I drank the last one I had before I started taking any notes. I still have an empty we use as decoration. I lol'd when I saw your note and had to comment... cheers!

Cherries with some spices. Has good structure but acidity seems out of balance right now. Still a nice bottle.

2/20/12, 11:16 AM - Just saw your review and we scored one point from each other. I got some cherry too. I just recently tried the '08 WS Bucher vineyard too and it was a more compelling wine to me at this time. Black Keys are still showing well too.

This wine is well into middle-age, and is certainly subject to bottle variation. This bottle has held up very well, but now is the time to open them.

Smoky nose with hint of dark fruit. Palate shows dark berries, particularly blackberries and blueberries, slight tannins and a long finish. Yet again, PAX does not disappoint.
  • hackey37 commented:

2/16/12, 9:06 PM - Hey... remember that one time in Sonoma, when Pax gave you that Magnum? Yeah, that was cool. I think I have one more of these bottles left. My Pax is dwindling so I need to make sure I dust off a bottle with you soon.

The South of France (Farpointe Cellar): The nose had eucalyptus, blackberry, pepper, cassis, grilled meat, and a little tar. The palate was super smooth, and had pepper, blackberry, tar, cassis, and a meaty finish.

2/16/12, 8:40 PM - I just had a bottle of this and we arrived at some similar conclusions about this one. I've got a few of these left and I'll make it a point to pop one open with you on the down the road!
