Decanted >2 hours. Big and bold Syrah grapes with hints of smoked meat, stone & minerality. A little funk as the vineyard is on the Rocks District border but not as funky as a Cayuse or Rotie Syrah. Delicious juice. This is a young wine but no hints of green in it. I could drink this all day or hold for years.

11/14/23, 12:34 PM - Hi KRHAUGH, this wine comes from Force Majeure’s Walla Walla Estate Vineyard (which they call Stellaire) and straddles the Rocks District boundary. It is not from the River Rock vineyard. I agree it is delicious!

Initially, the wine offered up rich and seductive scents of red berries, black cherries, plums, and mocha. The mouthfeel: creamy, fruity, and alcoholic. After several hours, however, this seemingly promising creation was overwhelmed by alcohol and unrelenting bitterness. The fruit seemed to have retreated into submission, leaving behind a very muted wine whose structure was lacking. Is this merely a passing phase? Hard to say, but I’m not sticking around to find out.

1/6/23, 12:44 PM - Hello MUSINUS, from your description I’d guess your bottle was corked. I had this wine a month ago and there was ample fruit and no bitterness. FM is good about replacing corked bottles if you just contact them.

This bottle was corked. I won't score.

Medium weight Syrah which in a blind tasting would pass for a Pinot. Beautifully contructed and balanced from start through finish. The wine was slow oxed for 30 minutes and then decanted for an hour. Feminine style with blue and red fruits. A little spice to keep it interesting. The wine is in its prime drinking window

2/13/22, 10:03 AM - Hello Jim, just curious, based on your comments did you intend to score 74 or was that a typo?

  • Redmtnman commented:

2/14/22, 9:30 AM - Thanks Jim, I opened a bottle several weeks ago and it was showing great, so thanks for the note and review!

Decanted for several hours the first night, but all this bottle offered was wood on the palate. Night two revealed fruit attempting to nudge all the oak aside with some semblance of success later in the evening. No sense of the varietal. Hopefully this will turn into something better.

1/29/22, 10:22 AM - Jeagal, Paul from Force Majeure here. So sorry to hear your experience with this bottle. Based on your description I’d guess the wine was mildly corked (fruit falls out, alchohol elevated, wood prominent). Mild corking doesn’t always show up as “wet dog”. Pls send an email to Alex or Matt @fm-wine.com and they will replace with another hopefully much better bottle! Cheers.

Opaque in color, concentrated and tannic. Promising but needs a couple of years in the bottle to better integrate. Will try again after 2023.
  • Redmtnman commented:

5/8/21, 12:54 PM - Hey Tim, a rule of thumb I find helpful is to give young wines one hour of decanting to equate to one year of bottle age. So 3 hours of decanting will give you a sense of where the wine will be after 3 years of bottle age. Try it —it’s pretty helpful with young wines in particular.

I obviously liked this wine more than most. A three hour decant and it never varied over the following three hours. So plush with terroir over fruit: smoked meat and licorice with no noticeable wood. Structure is obvious but not intrusive. My rating is probably a bit high, but then I did really look forward to repeatedly pouring more into my glass, so yeah.
  • Redmtnman commented:

5/13/20, 3:25 PM - Jeagle, your observation is actually spot on. The 2015 vintage just needs a little more time to resolve and open up. Earlier it was quite backwards. It is only just now starting to approach its drinking window. I expect it will reach its peak drinking in 2022-2025. Cheers!

Nice round dark fruit with mild tannins. A bit short on structure. Nonetheless, too bad it’s our last bottle.

This wine was a freaking revelation. I popped it on a whim and wasn’t expecting too much. I had read some reviews of the 2009 Collab Series IV and it didn’t seem like it had that much potential. Oh wow! Was I wrong. This wine is beautiful - lush, vibrant bursting from the glass, it is all you could ask for in a wine. It is predominantly merlot (61%) with 23% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petite Verdot and Cab Franc. It’s an inky purple, still very lively. On the nose, its a gorgeous bouquet of blue fruit, leather, mocha, spice and distinctive minerality. In the mouth, it is expansive with delicious notes of candied cherrys, blueberry, lead pencil and vanilla. With the tell-tale cocoa flavor filling out the finish. Tannins are lush, soft, sweet and well-integrated. The finish goes on for nearly a minute. This is one delicious wine and it was one of the most pleasurable wines in recent memory. A real delight!

Massively extracted fruit and three, or four, oak forests. It features berries and coconut, with berry and coconut accents, followed by a 'flood' of berries and coconuts. In sum, it sets a new standard for over-the-top and in-your-face! Not quite abominable, but not too far off either. Yuck!

12/27/19, 2:53 PM - Unfortunately I believe you may have tasted a faulty (mildly corked) bottle. Based on your description of “heavily oaked”, and out of balance. I tasted the wine a few days ago and though still quite young and primary, the fruit was very clean and elegant with very little oak evident. Tanzer (one of the toughest critics around) scored the wine 93 points, so I suspect you tasted a faulty bottle.

Hmm, seems my CT inventory is off, insofar as this was definitely in my Eurocave but not in CT. Anywho...

PnP, this was showing very well on initial pour at slightly warmer than cellar temperature. As time wore on and temperature increased to room temp, it fell out of balance, with tannins becoming somewhat harsh, overpowering the still strong fruit. Still, at ten years in, this is drinking well, if you keep the temp under control.
  • Redmtnman commented:

10/21/19, 12:15 PM - I opened a 2006 CIII a couple of weeks ago and was surprised by the youthfulness and energy it was still showing. Still a lot of life left. Agree that serving temp should be maintained in the 65-68 degree range.

flawed
This bottle was purchased from an online action website. This was not the first instance of receiving a flawed bottle from this vendor but rather a common occurrence. Having learned the hard way, I now only purchase wine directly from the vintner or reputable retailer. Caveat Emptor.
  • Redmtnman commented:

    8/7/19, 10:56 AM - Dear Oenophilemoose,

Paul McBride, owner of Force Majeure Vineyards here. I was sorry to hear that you had a disappointing experience with a bottle of our 2011 Collaboration V Cabernet Sauvignon. Based on your description I would wager that you had a mildly corked bottle that tends to suppress the fruit and accentuate oak and alcohol. Very frustrating as a winemaker and consumer. I have tasted a bottle recently that did not disappoint.

It sounds as if you have another bottle in your cellar? May I suggest that you open that one and try it to see if you have a much better wine.

If it is better we would gladly refund the cost of the corked bottle. If you are still disappointed with the second bottle we will refund both bottles. If you’re not happy, we’re not happy.

Let me know how we can make it right.

    Best regards,
    Paul

Super elegant, silky, and balanced. Dense, dark fruit, a bit of chocolate, and some nice savory notes from the syrah. This is drinking really well right now!

MASSIVE disappointment. decanted 4 hours, consumed over 5 hours. dusty, grippy, dry, and unyielding. graphite, fall leaves, dried herbs, and very little fruit. a touch of black cherry came through every now and then. I'm hoping I just popped this too early, but at this price point this was a real snooze fest. if scoring 81-83. it better get better or I'll be dropping off the list. there's a lot better juice out there for a lot less money.

9/18/13, 10:19 AM - CAELERIC/CAE_CPA, Paul McBride of Force Majeure here. So sorry to hear about your disappointment with a bottle of 2010 Collaboration Series Cabernet Sauvignon. Based on your description, it sounds very likely you had a corked bottle. Fruit falls out with a corked bottle and the wine is left with only wood, earth and alcohol. Very frustrating. In any case, please drop me a note at info@forcemajeurevineyards.com and I will send you a replacement bottle right away. Thank you, -Paul

p.s. when I tried this wine a couple of weeks ago it was still showing quite young (ample fruit and tannins), but settled down after several hours in a decanter. Should reach peak drinking in about 5-7 years.
