3 hour decant. This 2007 Cascina Nova from Elvio Cogno is just getting into its stride. Rich and powerful but well balanced with fruit concentration and acidity. Bright cherry fruit, licorice and a touch of leather. Continued evolving in the glass until the end. Delicious stuff

No mistaking this for anything other than classic but classy Rioja on the nose, bright cherry fruit merged with warm spice, pipe tobacco, vanilla and a touch of sous bois. The palate shows well integrated fine tannin, juicy acidity and an evolving palate again showing bright cherry, orange peel, truffle, cinnamon and earthy notes with a long evolving finish. Just hitting its stride now but with plenty of years ahead to gain in further complexity.

Intense aromatics from the off, black cherry and a hint of licorice. Lots of fine chalky tannins and juicy acidity. Just starting to get some tertiary notes, a little autumn leaves and truffle with more black cherry, plum and some cassis. Very enjoyable although the 15% abv provided a little too much warmth on a summer evening.

The palate is dry, medium body, medium + acidity, medium alcohol and medium + intensity of flavours that mirror the aromas. The finish is medium +. Good balance of acidity and flavour concentration and a great choice with some anchovies from L'Escala

Pale gold in colour. medium+ intensity aromas of ripe pineapple, green almonds, vanilla, toast and brioche. It has medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, medium body and medium+ intensity of flavours with ripe pineapple, mango, vanilla, toast and brioche all showing. It has a medium finish. Very good wine with good balance between fruit concentration and acidity. Good complexity showing primary and secondary notes but ultimately lacking a little intensity and is a bit short in the finish.

Deep ruby, pronounced intensity nose of Black plums, black cherries, licorice, dark chocolate, clove, toast, prune, truffle and forest floor. It has medium (+) acidity, High alcohol, Medium (+) body, Medium (+) ripe fine tannins and a pronounced intensity of flavours mirroring the aromas. It has a long finish. There is a good harmony between the fruit concentation, acidity and alcohol, the tannins are soft and well integrated. The alcohol despite being high, is well integrated and there is a good complexity comprising clusters of primary, secondary and tertiary notes. Overall this is an outstanding wine with potential for ageing and gaining in complexity.

Medium ruby, medium intensity with aromas of red plum, red cherry, raspberry, licorice, a little leather and pine forest. It is dry with medium acidity, medium + alcohol , medium body, and medium fine grained tannins. The flavour intensity is medium with notes mirroring the aromas, it has a medium + finish. Very good with a nice balance of alcohol and acidity, alcohol and tannins are well integrated. It is lacking a little complexity and intensity of flavour to make this really outstanding.

Very fine medium + tannins and medium intensity fruit driven palate. Red cherries, plum, redcurrant dominate over the tertiary notes with a medium + finish. Drinking lovely still and possibly more to come.

Deep ruby, medium intensity nose with lots of fruit, dark cherries and plums, black pepper and a little licorice. Medium acidity, high alcohol and full bodied, the tannins are medium + as is the intensity on the palate, more notes of dark plums and black cherries this time macerated in licor. the finish is medium+. Good quality wine although the alcohol is quite noticeable. Drink now but would certainly age and gain in complexity.

Acidity is medium, the body is medium+ as is the alcohol and the tannins are medium+ mouthcoating and ripe. The flavours are of a medium+ intensity and mirror that of the aromatics but adding also some mocha, dark chocolate and nutmeg. The finish is medium+. Very good quality, with good complexity although lacking a touch of aromatic intensity.

Clear deep garnet with and abundance of thick tears, nose is of medium intensity, clean mountain herbs, ripe red fruis, plums, lactic notes along with licorice and a hint of meatiness also. The palate is savoury with dark ripe plums and a touch of spice, medium alcohol well integrated, medium acidity, medium + body and fine medium tanins finishing with a medium + length. Plenty more to come from this classy cariñena.

Mid golden colour, notes of vanilla, ripe fruits especially pineapple and melon and toast with quite a high intensity. The palate points to more ripe fruits with ripe red apple joining the party, alcohol is quite well integrated now and the acidity a little on low side, wonderful wine but feeling this has now just edged past its peak.

Pale ruby with slight bricked rim, nose is quite earthy mixed with red fruits, redcurrant, cranberry and tart red cherry and a little herbiness of medium intensity. The palate is more dominated by the herby flavours, red fruits now in the background. Light bodied and medium acidity and alcohol, enjoyable summer red without being sensational.

Quite evolved colour, the nose is medium plus intensity, balsamic, blackcurrant and mint with some herby green leaf. More blackcurrant and mint on the palate with a touch of cedar, medium acidity, alcohol and body with fine tannins giving some texture. Pleasant enough but expecting to excite a little more for the price.

Dark garnet with a fine bricked rim, tertiary notes dominate now with a medium intensity, leather and tobacco with a little spice and vanilla. Medium acidity and alcohol, tannins well integrated now, the flavour profile matches to the aromas with a little added black pepper leading to a medium finish. Drinking well now, nothing left to evolve so holding further seems pointless.

More complete than 2007 and the alcohol better intergrated Plenty of time for this yet.

2 hour decant, licorice and blackcurrant on the nose with a little vanilla, tanins fine giving a little grip, more concentrated black berries on the palate mixed with warm spices and a medium acidity leading to a medium finish, unfortunately this is all dominated by the alcohol. Still a couple more years in this but I don't think there will be any improvement.

Revisited 18 months later, the tannins are still quite abundant and need a good airing before they settle down. The flavour profile remains similar, brooding dark fruits, a little creaminess and a hit of balsamic type herbal notes. What really surprises with this wine is the level of acidity and the freshness, bearing in mind the area it is from, drinking lovely still but with plenty of time left yet.

Rim well bricked, plenty of wet autumn leaves on the nose, leather, black tea ripe prunes and cedar, certainly an intriguing nose that leads you back in time and time again. The palate carries on with the tertiary notes, more leather and autumn leaves combined with ripe red berries, medium + acidity and a fine coating of powdery tannins ensure this wine can hold for longer although there is little fruit left for it to gain in complexity, drinking really well now.

A shade of bricking on the rim, more aromatic now, plums, tobacco, mountain herbs and a little leather. The palate has a wonderful balance, brooding dark fruits, berries and plums, slightly sweet on the entrance, notes of cedar and fine powdery tannins. There is real power here but is beautifully matched by the acidity , the alcohol is barely perceptible in the long spicy finish. Wonderful, classic Priorat with more to come.
