Mouton-Rothschild Tasting (Kronenschlösschen, Eltville): Certainly better than expected. Attractive nose of moss, damp earth, leather. On the palate a beguiling sweetness even if not terribly complicated. Nice alongside food.

This was an NV with grapes from 1959/1960/1961. Still clinging on to dear life with even some bubbles. Nose of brioche, yeast. On the palate nuts, roast almonds, some honey, quince.

3/11/15, 5:05 AM - I don't think you can. In this particular case this was a lot of several case for which the purchase date was known.

Mouton-Rothschild Tasting (Kronenschlösschen, Eltville): Still pretty intense, dense, full-bodied but less concentrated than I remember it. Some game, leather, underwood.
  • mwanasheria commented:

    3/7/15, 12:48 PM - About 7 minutes I think ...

  • mwanasheria commented:

3/7/15, 2:49 PM - I have come to think that a quick double decant is best and then give the wine some time in the glass to open up. In any event, this bottle was not as spectacular as many of the previous ones.

This is easily one of the best wines I had in the last 43 years, if not the best. This was just so pure and balanced - totally defying the 15% of alcohol that it would admit to on the label. Great cassis, truffle, earth, spice. So thick and chewy, almost unctuous. Great great juice. And since it was on that restaurant's wine list for a quarter of the current market price I absolutely had to drink it ...

11/17/14, 9:29 PM - It was in Paris. I can look up which one if you are really considering,

Quite good with unbelievable vulcanic minerality, dark fruit, tobacco. I had rated other vintages even higher but this was really good.
  • mwanasheria commented:

8/14/14, 4:13 AM - 08 and 09 are indeed flat out spectacular. The 10 is really good I just thought the minerality could have been better balanced off. You can almost bite the lava ash.

Again a very nice showing. A beautiful Riesling nose with hints of botrytis. On the palate fresh and lively with grapefruit, pineapple, mango, passion fruit.
  • mwanasheria commented:

3/10/14, 5:57 AM - Old Riesling and food is not easy in my view. I prefer to drink it between the courses! But this did go pretty well with the lobster salad I had and my wife did not mind it with her foie gras.

Beautiful Cabernet with a Pauillac nose, nicely mature. on the palate cedar, herbs, blackberries, smoked earth and very smooth tannins.
  • mwanasheria commented:

11/28/13, 1:40 AM - It drinks so beautifully right now but I don't see it decline for the next 10 years or longer.

From .375. Nose slightly unclean with cellar notes, probably a prblem of that particular bottle.
  • mwanasheria commented:

9/24/13, 9:26 AM - Damp cloth would probably describe it best. Had another bottle from the same batch a few days later and that was just fine.

From .375. Still going strong from the small bottle, grapefruit, pineapple, seville orange, honey. Great.
  • mwanasheria commented:

9/9/13, 5:25 AM - Yes, although the sweetness is not very pronounced anymore.

Great freshness despite the high alcohol with spices, bellpepper, yet sweet fruit and long finish.
  • mwanasheria commented:

1/20/13, 11:10 AM - Thanks - I think all three bottles that I had were nice, but I had one at a restaurant last summer that was really murky and not good.

La Mission Haut Brion; 3/9/2012-3/10/2012 (Burg Staufeneck): Sour nose, but better palate with some residual sweetness, leather, musk. Not very compelling.

12/25/12, 1:42 PM - Thanks. Will keep trying.

Melon, pawpaw, bitter orange. Nose of flowers, quite striking.
  • mwanasheria commented:

12/17/12, 1:34 PM - Pawpaw may be a bit too colonial and British ... papaya is better.
