2/13/24, 5:21 PM - Definitely no hint of smoke taint. I’m not 100% certain, but I don’t believe the fire/smoke made it to Santa Barbara County.
12/29/23, 4:17 PM - Glad to hear it, Bobby. You know I’m a fan of that wine in particular.
12/6/23, 2:44 PM - Good to know. Maybe that's part of what happened with my buying. I just made sure they have my email address so I might get an offer for the '21. The offer usually comes out in Jan/Feb, if I remember correctly?
11/13/23, 10:53 AM - Thanks. To my palate, they’re at peak Definitely not past. Consensus around the table was that they were both showing very well.
10/3/23, 11:26 AM - Maybe with a few other Merlots when you're up for Thanksgiving? I have a Seavey Merlot that's ready to go, along with a Plumpjack that I've been holding for a while to round into form. Yes?
10/3/23, 3:50 PM - Sounds like a plan.
5/27/23, 11:01 AM - While they were still pouring the ‘18s then, I convinced our host to open a bottle of the ‘19 Howell cab for us to try when we visited in September. To me, it was probably 95-96 that day. I’m a huge fan of O’Shaughnessy Howell Mountain cab in most vintages, and this was no different. The ‘18, on the other hand, showed significant bitterness on the back end, which I associate with smoke taint. Not a fan of that wine. And I agree with your note on the Merlot. (posted separately). One of my favorite Merlots in Napa.
9/27/23, 6:57 PM - I’ll echo your comments. O’Shaughnessy tastes more unique and complex to me. I’ve been a big fan of Mike Smith’s wines for close to 15 years, but I do find that they have a certain sameness to them. For me, his winemaking style is the most notable aspect of the wines and it sometimes seems to obscure vineyard character.
5/27/23, 10:57 AM - Just wondering, in terms of preparing my own bottle – did you decant and, if not, would you recommend that?
5/27/23, 6:43 PM - Thanks, Nick.
4/21/23, 6:39 AM - If you go to another wine that does list a drinking window and click on the hyperlink for the window, you’ll see a brief description of how they derive drinking windows for each wine. You can also enter your own, based on your experience with or perception of the wine. Where a wine has not been reviewed by any of the publications they list, and no user has entered their own drinking window, one does not appear. That definitely doesn’t mean that you need to drink the wine now. I would have no worries about drinking this wine over the next four or five years at least.
4/19/23, 6:03 PM - I agree. I had this on pop and pour at the winery in September and it was terrific. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s shutting down a bit. After a few months, they really do need time in the cellar to show their best. I usually start enjoying them about 8 years from vintage.
4/16/23, 6:10 AM - I read your comment in March advocating to drink this as a pop & pour, but see you noted a 3 hr slow ox on this bottle. Which showed better for you?
4/16/23, 7:46 AM - Thanks for the quick response. I did my first as a pop & pour, so will try another this week with an hour or so of air.
4/16/23, 7:55 AM - Will do. Thanks.
4/1/23, 9:04 AM - Thanks for the comment, Badmonkey. I always enjoy reading your notes on Mike’s young wines. I typically enjoy his wines with a few more years on them than I think you do (based on reading your notes), but I always enjoy your early takes, as they give me an idea what to expect.
4/1/23, 10:00 AM - I appreciate the additional input. Thanks. My wife is every bit the red wine drinker that I am, so very few wines ever see day two around here. I mean like almost never. Haha! Take care.
1/2/23, 9:08 AM - I have a single and expect to open it in the next few months. Would you recommend a decant and, if so, how long might be best?
1/2/23, 2:41 PM - Terrific. Thank you!
12/4/22, 4:13 PM - “Really good” and a score of 50 seem to be at odds to me…?
11/6/22, 5:14 AM - I agree. I was surprised how well the 2017 was drinking at such an early stage, as that’s not typically when these wines show their best. The 2017 is among my favorite three vintages of Black Cat, along with the 2009 (clearly the top, to me) and 2012.
3/25/21, 10:38 AM - 2009 is drinking very well, if you have it or can find it at auction.
3/23/21, 5:26 AM - Would love to hear your update from day 2, if your impressions changed.
2/10/21, 2:34 PM - Do you recommend decanting for some period of time, or do you feel it’s ready to go on opening? I’m planning to open my lone bottle on Valentine’s Day. Thanks.
2/10/21, 8:13 PM - Great, thanks!
2/6/21, 1:53 PM - I'm just about to start my third case of this wine and, like you, will probably order more this spring. I've also bought a number of bottles of the 2014 Continuity which, as you know, is another winner.
1/19/21, 5:18 PM - Too bad, Tim. We opened a bottle on Christmas Eve and it was excellent. We’ve opened one every two years since age 10, and the most recent was the best yet.
1/9/21, 7:33 PM - Good call on the similarities to a St. Emilion. Really, it’s a terrific buy for $27.
12/23/20, 5:43 AM - I am opening my lone bottle of this on Christmas day. Any decanting advice? Thanks in advance.
12/24/20, 6:29 AM - Thanks for the suggestion!
12/23/20, 5:42 AM - Hi Keith,I have one bottle of this and am opening it for Christmas dinner. Do you have any advice on decanting? Thanks in advance.Andy
12/23/20, 10:50 AM - Thanks!
12/23/20, 5:39 AM - I’m opening this on Christmas and am looking for decanting advice. Sounds like your bottle showed well. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.
12/23/20, 6:07 AM - Thank you!
12/23/20, 5:37 AM - I’m opening this on Christmas and am looking for decanting advice. Sounds like your bottle showed well. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.
12/23/20, 5:48 AM - Thanks – I appreciate it!
12/7/20, 3:13 PM - Sounds like a bad bottle. I opened two of these in the last month and both were fresh and quite tasty.
10/16/20, 6:29 PM - Thanks! Yes, the wine is really great. Only other vintage I’ve had of the Mt. Veeder was the 2006, and it was even better.
10/4/20, 11:36 AM - Thanks for the update. I find 3 years in the cellar makes these really blossom.
9/5/20, 6:48 PM - Didn’t know about Grenache Day, but I’m sure we can rise to the occasion! This wine is definitely more elegant and graceful, rather than bold and boisterous...which is consistent with all of the previous EMH cabs I’ve had. I do like to hold them for at least 6-7 years, before opening. And, as Merrill will tell you, decanting is recommended. Somewhere between 1-2 hours usually does allow the wine to open up and show better.By the way, I don’t get cocoa on these wines. Usually, I get dark red fruits, a touch of minerality, and a lively acidity. Aging them helps the acidity integrate well; sometimes it feel a bit prominent when they’re younger.Hope that’s helpful.
8/21/20, 5:30 AM - I never enjoyed these when I drank them young. It was only when I started to let them age a few years post-release that I found out just how much I enjoy them. I’m currently drinking my 2014s and 2015s and they are in a very good spot. Having had that experience for several vintages now, I have confidence that the 2018s will be showing well a few years down the road.
7/26/20, 9:51 AM - Happy to see the update on the wine. But, more importantly, that dish sounds delicious!
6/23/20, 7:22 PM - Yes. Joel released a number of old wines this fall, which had been stored by the winery since release and sampled by him in the preceding few months. Sadly, I struck out on the two I purchased.
4/24/20, 11:11 AM - I'm confused. Both notes seem to be positive, but you scored this bottle an 80 and the last bottle a 91. Doesn't seem to line up with you saying you "sold this one short in (your) first tasting note." ??
4/24/20, 3:11 PM - Thanks! Drinking in the sun will do that to you! ;)
4/5/20, 7:13 AM - Sounds very similar to a 2013 Becklyn that four of us shared last summer. The wine just seemed very awkward, with the acidity sticking out in a way that was unlike anything I’d ever encountered in a Mike Smith wine. I’m hoping these all come around, as we’ve got a fair number of Mike’s ‘13 cabs and, based on our preferences with his previous wines going back to the ‘08s, have held them with plans to drink in the 7-12 year window.
3/21/20, 10:40 PM - Aren’t we all...
1/4/20, 5:58 AM - Nice note, and I’m glad it showed well. Did you pop and pour or decant?
1/4/20, 8:36 AM - Very helpful - thank you.
1/18/19, 4:17 AM - Sounds like a great trip - I’m super jealous. Enjoy!
9/22/18, 1:51 PM - Second half of the bottle consumed on day 3. I think I like it a touch better this evening. 91.
8/26/18, 11:25 AM - I agree. Three years out on one of their red wines, especially one of the single vineyard designates, is simply too early for them to show well. Try in another 3 years maybe, or, as suggested, source an older vintage to try.
7/5/18, 8:51 AM - I agree. For a long time, they were my favorite winery. Loved all of their reds, which I bought direct and at auction across many vintages. Even visited three times for tastings. After the huge price increases, I’ve had to say goodbye. I haven’t purchased a single bottle of any of the more recent vintages and know others in the same boat. I think they intentionally repositioned themselves ‘up market’ and probably haven’t had a problem selling to folks in that segment of the market. But I miss them.
6/30/18, 7:11 AM - I find the first comment very helpful. Thanks for that.
6/30/18, 6:47 AM - Terrific note. Thank you.
6/20/18, 5:20 AM - What qualifies as upscale BBQ?
4/15/18, 5:35 PM - Takk.
2/20/18, 11:21 AM - Yes, I know Merrill suggests at least a 2 hr decant on all her wines. I haven’t had one that got too much air and, even with a 2+ hr decant, the last glass tends to be the best.
12/27/17, 7:49 AM - Wow, I’m surprised to hear that. My wife and I had a very good visit there 2-3 years ago, and the wines and staff were terrific.
8/18/17, 2:18 PM - Nice note. Wish I had been able to grab one of these but, alas, wasn't offered any. I love the fruit that comes from this vineyard.
8/5/17, 10:41 PM - Bummer. I opened one last week and it was excellent.
2/18/17, 6:51 AM - Nice note but, yes, it seems like you marked the wine 'flawed' by accident.
5/17/16, 9:07 PM - I have to agree with the first comment. I've had this and it's nothing like you describe. Given that your review is so far out of line with the other notes on this wine (this vintage AND others), it might have been reasonable to question whether your bottle was truly representative, rather than post what seems like a mean-spirited trashing.
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
