Drank with friends at Underwood Bistro. Double decanted and cleaned bottle ahead of time. Popped and aired at restaurant for 90 minutes. Really developed nicely in that time black fruit, anise cedar, picked up considerable weight in the glass. Nice round texture, full bodied, fruit holding it’s own, tannins resolved. Fred gets it. Great showing.

Was driving up Westside Rd one Saturday a dozen years back with Not647f on our way to Mauritson when we came upon DaVero and we drawn in by RFs love of Italian varieties. Came home with this wine and it’s been sitting in the cellar ever since. Like the ‘11 Turley Cab it was time to open this ‘11 Carignano. From 100+ year old head pruned vines, biodynamically farmed. Color is brilliant ruby red, nose is shy on fruit but with a more earthy/meaty component of roasted red meat and mushroom. Juicy sour cherry, ripe raspberry and strawberry fruit notes pulled together with ample acidity, almost mouth puckering. Medium bodied, tart red berries with tannins coming in on the mid-palate. The fruit turns to cherry Jolly Rancher on the finish and remains tart with a medium grip. Very enjoyable, food friendly wine.

Purchased on release. Was making room in the cellar yesterday and put this in the “Why haven’t I opened this already?” pile. Initial chatter amongst wine geeks online was kind of pedestrian so I was in no rush to open it. Nice dark color, just a hint of bricking. Nose is a touch advanced for the age but what’s interesting is that it doesn’t give me a whole lot of Cabernet Sauvignon. My Wife asked which one of the open wines she should drink and I let her have a sip of mine. I told her it’s a Cab but it doesn’t drink like one. Her response “ Tastes like a Zinfandel”
I showed her who made it and smiled. She was on point. There’s a boysenberry element to this that guides me towards Zin more than Cab. A juiciness reminiscent of Piner/Olivet or more specifically Dolinsek. Medium bodied with a rush of tangy blackberry on the mid-palate, fully integrated tannin and a lingering tart/sweet finish. Not a bad wine by any stretch but as a representation of the variety it fell short. Treating it as a double blind tasting serves it well.

Grainy cork was in real tight, kept a perfect seal. Color dark burgundy and dense. Nose is dominated by truffles and menthol. Fairly full bodied, blueberry, Kirsch, sour cherry. The mid-palate flattens out a bit and the fruit struggles to hold on. Turns to a blackberry finish with just the most subtle hint of tannin remaining. Solid but unremarkable. I remember an ‘83 Foppiano PS I opened about 10yrs ago that was lithe and fresh. Different winemaking team for this one made a wine more crowd pleasing and less structured. Not bad, definitely drinkable.

Time to cull the cellar of old bottles with low expectations. Today it’s this ‘82 Dry Creek Late Harvest Zinfandel. Acquired this in a cellar sale along with a case of other preserved wines, most of which drank real well. The fact that this was a late harvest left some hope. 42 years young.
Cork was filthy on top but not soaked. The wine stain crept up about 2/3 the way. Decanted through cheesecloth and let it air for an hour.

Color was brown, first whiff was rough, Madeira, stewed prunes and alcohlol. The 16.5 on the label was on point. Gave it an hour in the glass. It was very viscous, creamy and sweet. Cherry pie filling, strawberry rhubarb, syrupy, Madeira, heat and just a hint of chewy tannin on the finish. Surprisingly still alive despite the age. Upon opening I was ready to dump it out, now a few hours later I’m going to double decant and save the remainder for tomorrow. Nice dessert addition. I can also see it making a delicious sauce for a filet. Was a fun follow.

Pours a dark crimson. Intriguing nose, dark berries, oak, cinnamon stick, fresh turned soil, pine needle, white pepper. Sweet black cherries, cola, Chinese Five Spice, oak with fabulous depth and precision. Ample acidity expands the palate pulling in the chewy tannins. Beautifully balanced, well structured for a long cellaring but absolutely delicious right now. Wow!

Just picked multiple vintages up from a private party sale and had extra on the ‘01s so I pobega’d it. Fill was perfect on this bottle and the capsule spun with ease. Sank my corkscrew in and slowly pulled the cork up til, snap, the last 3/8” stayed in the neck because the worm wasn’t long enough. Grabbed the Durand worm and extracted the remainder which seriously only had 1/8” of wine stain in it. At 22 years in the bottle.
Pours a cloudy crimson. Let sit in the glass for an hour or more before enjoying with dinner. Afterdinner pour, black currant, anise and cedar greet the nose along with a hint of dusty dirt road. Fruit is mellow cassis, black currant and raspberry that glides weightlessly across the palate. I just can’t get over the color that shows minimal if any bricking. Nice bright acid pushed through the finish which could use a touch more structure but the oak and tannins have resolved leaving just the slightest grip in the finish. Super showing from one of Sonoma County’s great producers.

Pours very dark blackish purple. Nose is heavy on blackberry, anise, oak and tobacco leaf. Big fruit up front, strong oak signature, black currant, blackberry, chocolate covered coffee bean. Texture is full, round, mouth coating, tannins are in line with the fruit structure but well managed and beginning to soften. Wham, bam, thank you Ma’am and on to the next sip. Borders on flabby but there’s enough acid to fight that off. Still showing very young. Another 10 years and try it again.

Was going through my cellar grabbing wines for a charity auction when I grabbed this and noticed it was a leaker. Sticky residue around the Stelvin and a slightly low ullage (an inch below the capsule) had me worried. Pulled the cap, cleaned the bottle neck and it poured a brilliant golden yellow.
Nose full of petrol, Asian pear and wet stones giving off a heavy Riesling vibe. Off dry, creamy and viscous, with lychee, sugared grapefruit segment and a steely minerality taking you on a sensory spin. The acid is the latecomer but lingers in the long finish. This is a really wonderful bottle of wine that spreading its wings beautifully.

Bottle was given to me by the winemaker for the purpose of tasting and giving my impressions in a tasting note.
50% whole cluster fermented, Pommard clone, aged 9 months in neutral French oak. 13.1%
The wine presents itself with a radiant ruby-red hue. Delicate aromas of cola, red cherry, Santa Rosa plum, and a hint of cinnamon greet you. Upon the first sip, a symphony of roasting spices captivates the palate, creating a delightful harmony with the semi-rich fruit. Black cherry and red currant take center stage, showcasing a well-structured flavor profile. The medium-bodied nature is complemented by well balanced tannins and acidity, culminating in a cohesive experience.
While the wine is enjoyable now, it holds promise for further development with aging or extended decanting. This is a companion to be savored with a wonderful meal, particularly lamb.
After re-corking at cellar temperature and revisiting a couple of days later, the wine displayed a subtle transformation. The fruit receded on the nose, making way for intriguing notes of forest floor and fir needles. This savory edge enhances the wine's complexity, reaffirming the choice of pairing with lamb.

Bottle was given to me by the winemaker for the purpose of tasting and giving my impressions in a tasting note.
Whole cluster pressed into 19% new French oak barrels for fermentation, followed by 9 months of aging sur lie.
A delicate pour reveals a very pale straw color, inviting anticipation of the journey ahead. The aromatics begin with a tropical allure, accented by a distinctive banana note. As you delve deeper, gardenia petals unfold, followed by the enticing essence of honeyed green tea. A harmonious dance of tartness and sweetness unfolds on the palate. Layers of flavor include zesty lemon curd and crisp Granny Smith apple, complemented by a velvety, creamy texture that adds a luxurious dimension. Despite the creaminess, the wine maintains a light and agile profile, accompanied by an edgy, steely minerality that adds an intriguing depth.
While previous vintages displayed a leaner profile, the 2022 vintage beckons a different companion. This Chardonnay seems to yearn for a decadent pairing, envisioning the creamy indulgence of triple cream brie, such as Mt Tam, spread on a freshly baked sourdough baguette.

Bottle was given to me by the winemaker for the purpose of tasting and giving my impressions in a tasting note. Partial whole cluster ferment, aged in 20% new French oak. 13.5% abv.
Pours a brilliant magenta and exhibits a beautiful nose of bramble fruit, dried persimmon and spice. The fun continues with a delicate palate of lively sweet zinberry and a red volcanic soil note reminiscent of the renowned Monte Rosso vineyard. What really makes this Zin special is how the fruit is complimented by a well balanced support of acid and tannin structure. A very complete wine, it comes at you from all angles with a warm spice adding depth and complexity while the firm tannins speak to its age-worthiness. I’m a Zin head and I appreciate the nostalgic charm of this old school version that’s sure to impress for years to come.

Close your eyes and think about a warm Fall day, a shower passes over quickly and then you take a quick walk to the market. This was the first sprinkle of the season and you get a whiff of the rain as it evaporates off the sidewalk and manhole covers. That steely, wet river rock sensation sets in. You get to the market and the fresh citrus is out on display. Lemons, limes, navel oranges and more. The grocer hands you a segment of grapefruit and as you bite down on it you get a rush of tangy bittersweet fruit with racy acidity that engulfs your palate. You grab a couple along with a small pineapple and some lemons. They have fresh oysters on ice and you grab a half dozen, then scoot back home where you set down on the back porch with the last Jasmine of the season sweetening the air. You shuck the oysters, slice the fruit, sit back and take it all in. That’s when you hear it faintly in the distance, it’s Jerry singing “Bertha don’t you come around here anymore…”
It’s kinda like that.

11-22 disgorgement, paired with Pomegranate and Cranberry stuffed Pork Chops. Great pairing as the wine displays both fruits in aromatics and color. Racy with nice persistence, minerality and acidity. Limestone chalkiness, pleasantly long slightly tart finish. Fun wine!

Was a Secret Santa gift, never tasted one before. Only Paso bottle in my cellar. Zin, Syrah, Mourvèdre blend at a whopping 15.7%abv. Dark black cherry color, nose more GSM than Zinfandel. Blackberry, black cherry, the blending wines must have been pretty ripe as the palate was all ripe fruit with no acid backbone to speak of and little spice. Kinda what I usually get from Paso wines I’ve had. Was easy drinking and hid the alcohol well but not memorable. Wouldn’t seek out more.

Been open about 90 min, first pour still in the glass. Lots of interesting spice on the nose along with some earthiness and leaning even a touch blue. Earthy pice laden palate with zesty dark cherry and citrus amplified by the stem inclusion. Crunchy cranberries and that spice that just keeps coming. Really digging this.

Pale straw color, slightly reductive nose with some grapefruit and quince. More quince and/or under-ripe green apple and a dash of honey. Lip smacking acidity and a steely minerality. This would go well with shellfish but tonight it gets chicken pot pie.

Bright ruby color, nose of cranberry and nutmeg but the palate explodes with juicy sweet cherry and strawberry, quite expansive and gulpable. Tannins could soften a bit but I’m being picky now. This is delicious. We drained the bottle in no time flat.

Went to a book signing/tasting tonight at Marine Layer in Healdsburg and had an opportunity to taste the ‘21 Halcon Estate Syrah. I wasn’t planning on opening any of the bottles I purchased any time soon so this was a good opportunity to get some data points on it.
Pours deep dark purple almost black. Nose of violets and roasted meat but little else right now. This is extremely young and it’s a hard body. Blackberry, soy and a touch of black olive wound up in a tight package with lip smacking acidity and some pretty mean tannins. It’s got the stuffing, very Côte-Rôtie in style. This will benefit from some cellaring. In the short term a good 24-48hr decant at minimum.

Pop n pour. Nose and palate loaded with orchard fruits, some lemon cream on the mid-palate. Acidity cut through the Apricot/Brie en Croûte we paired it with. Very enjoyable.

First look at this producer. Fruit coming from all angles here. Tropical on the nose, citrus on the finish, but with enough acidity and minerality to balance it out. Was received well by the guests. Glad to have a couple more as well as some other iterations. Good value.

Well lookie here, another 2020 Napa Valley red with no smoke taint. St Helena no less. Brambly red fruit and spice. Wonderful texture, medium bodied, lingering spice on the finish. Great pairing with Thanksgiving fare.

Picked this up as part of an Estate cellar sale. Cork was pristine, color brick red with a burgundy hue. Nose of dried cherries, fig and soy. Texture is still fairly round for the wines age but lithe at 13.5abv. It’s supported by sweet strawberry and raspberry compote, well balanced acidity and dusty tannins. With an hour of air it picked up a little purple fruit and the texture got rounder. While it shows its age in the secondary aromas of pitted prunes and rose petals it’s in no way a slouch or OTH. Old school RRV Zin from an old school producer whose facility now houses Martin Ray. What a fun Sunday afternoon wine to enjoy with some football.

Open 24 hrs. Deep dark ruby color, nose of sweet black cherry, tar and cassis screaming Oakville. This has a plushness to the texture that just grabs you and brings you to attention. It envelopes you in a nice warm soft blanket in front of a fire eating bon bons. No, really. This wine is fantastic. Will be phenomenal in a few years. Screw the 2020 Napa nay-sayers.

From Magnum. Double decanted Friday evening, served Saturday, 1/2 bottle left on Sunday. On Saturday this had a purple up valley (Calistoga) fruit profile. Today it’s transformed. Dark ruby, not as deep and dense as a typical Mike Smith Cab. Briary red currant, black cherry, cassis, muddled raspberry. Very polished, great balance, surprisingly approachable. Reminds me a lot of Carter Grand Daddy. I’m calling ToKalon fruit. Damn tasty.

Edit: The bottle sat all week with a cork in it and I finished off the final two glasses the following Friday. It was still fresh and lively with no sign of decay. This thing is ageless, keep it stashed.

24 hour decant, note from 48hr mark. Dark purple with a black as night core. Boysenberry, black currant and a hint of leather. Medium bodied more black currant, tar, roasted coffee beans and some red berries coming in late with the rush of acidity. Tannins are still firm and chalky. Judicious oak, it’s coming around nicely, will check back in in 4-5yrs.

My first time with this wine. Wow, is this good. A full bodied Assyrtiko with a bit of an oak signature but packed full of crushed rock minerality, lanolin, white nectarine, and citrus. There’s a citrus blossom note on the nose that I dig. Bursting with fresh acidity and lemon it was most pleasurable at room temp. Old Vine sur lee Assyrtiko? Hell yeah.

Had this last night and noticed FMIII’s note today. I think we’re in agreement on this one.

Blend of 2014/2018 Disgorged 12/21/21 100% Pinot Meunier 0g/L dosage
Limestone and citrus nose, bright, oyster shell, flint, lemon, persistent mousse, rich with a hint of green apple and honey, minerally finish, fresh acidity, lovely wine.

Used my Durand but the cork crumbled nonetheless. Nose of dried cherries, cinnamon and a hint of clove. Initially on entry it was thin and washed out. That changed after a couple hours of air. It really fleshed out and continued to expand with strawberry, cherry and fig. On night 2 it’s more of the same. Tannins are a bit chalky but the fruit and acidity are persistent and pull the finish through. Great bottle of aged Zinfandel.

Disgorged 02-22, cork shot out as I was removing the wire. Stayed in the cage though, no dent in the ceiling. First pour at cellar temp (49°) Quick whiff of crescent roll dough and white peach. Up front the mouse is broad and persistent, tart green caramel apple, followed by lemon/lime/grapefruit, but it has a creamy texture. After a little swirling it’s practically a still wine, the finish sporting a little more dough but also a mineral presence. Wondering about the disappearing act by the bubbles. As subsequent pours approach room temp a little nuttiness comes to the forefront the palate is still broad but the acidity is intense and hurts my teeth a bit. No more swirling, bubbles intact. I like this but finish is almost too austere. Almost.

Birthday treat from the bottom of the cellar racking. Humidity is a bit high and the label was sliding off a touch. Regardless the wine inside the bottle is the feature. Color is quite nice, a dark magenta with no bricking. The nose is starting to exhibit secondary notes of leather along with blackberry, sage and perhaps bay leaf. The fruit up front is holding up nicely with black berry and blueberry notes. Concentrated but not heavy, rather it’s focused, medium bodied and balanced. Tannins are fully resolved and this just glides across the palate seamlessly. A touch of tart red berry on the finish completes this wine wonderfully. Extremely food friendly and lithe. It’s in a great place right now and love where it’s headed. Drink over the next 5+ years.

First look at this Brut Zero from Cabot. Pop n pour at cellar temp (48°). Spring flowers, green apple skin and wet stones on the nose. Lemon lime, great body with more green apple and brioche. There’s a sweetness to the fruit that rounds the palate out really well. Acid lovers unite! The finish builds and builds to a mouthwatering crescendo. I echo Brigs note that hands down this is the best Domestic sparkler I’ve ever tasted and it’s not even close. Our notes are pretty carbon copy too. Eerily so.

Popped and followed for a couple days. 13.2% abv, 50% Whole Cluster in neutral French oak.

Light garnet color. Pine needles, and a melange of spices. Clove, nutmeg and cinnamon play off the cherry and persimmon fruit. But wait, it gets better... light handed red cherry, cranberry and a hint of strawberry is woven into a luxuriously delicate palate. I think my first words were, "Wow, this is incredible!" Exquisite balance on display and it's seamless in its transition from the start to the crunchy tart finish framed by pillowy soft tannins. This is a fantastic bottle of Pinot Noir IMO.

Popped and followed over several days. 13% abv, barrel fermented neutral French oak sur lie, 50% whole cluster, partial malo, racked at bottling.

Pale straw color tinged a touch green. Faint nose varying from saline sea breeze to vanilla bean, white flowers and dried grass. There's a steelie tension to this wine, stems? Very delicate/light touch, mid-palate is hidden at cellar temps but with a rise in temperature lemon curd and oyster shell minerality, turns creamy on the texture. The acidity comes to the forefront followed with a mineral blast, lemon-lime, green apple skin and that tension. The finish is long and lip-pursingly tart. I found it to be most expressive at or near room temperature and on day two. Would pair great with shellfish or creamy pasta. A different cat than the Linda Vista but equally enjoyable.

This is my first go-round with this wine but I need to get more time with it. This was lovely. A faint tinge of salmon color, a mineral streak ahead of the mousse with wonderful body. Stone fruit with a hint of citrus, it flashes the fruit at your palate and then merges back into it’s mineral lane. Really enjoyed this but had far too little time with it. Relative bargain at $52.99

Wine stains under capsule, cork saturated, poured through a strainer to catch the crunchies. Color of burnt automatic transmission fluid mixed with prune juice. No aromas to coincide with the color thank goodness. Faint hints of blackberry pie and toasty crust. Kind of a Zinfandel meets Sangiovese with rich blackberry fruit but sharp edges that softened after opened an hour. Big structure that will take several years to integrate like Sangio often does. Domestic Lagrein eh? I had no expectations ahead of time and it turns out to be a fairly pleasing wine that just needs time to blossom, despite the cork failure.

Pours brick with a garnet core. Dried flowers, cinnamon with a whiff of strawberry rhubarb. Really pleasing candied cherries and green tea, vibrant and juicy with expansive acidity that delights the entire palate. Very soft integrated tannins and that juiciness that lingers on. Hard to put down, a real joy to drink at this stage.

Took delivery of my futures last week and we’ve already blown through two bottles. This ‘20 is rocking good, Fred hit a veritable home run with this wine. Aromatics are great on pop-n-pour, fruit and juiciness are lively and plenty of structure. Night two (one pour left) rises to another level. Fantastic!

The last of a 3pack purchased in a cellar sale.

This showed the best of the 3. Advanced nose and color, a bit Maderized with a brick red appearance. The underlying fruit was a lovely mix of red cherry, rhubarb, strawberry and tea. Not as much acidity as the Syrah but still a bit of chewy tannin in the finish. There was a little push of leather but overall fairly simple aromatically. I appreciated that it was still drinkable at 38yrs of age. It fell apart fairly quickly after a few hours but delighted us for the short time we followed it.

This one pours a dark magenta color with absolutely no bricking. Nose of dried flowers, sage, mushrooms and dark berries. The palate while complete is elegant and seamless with blackberry, loam, dried black cherry and a dusting of white pepper. The balance on this wine is incredible from nose to finish, savory, with perfect acidity and fully resolved tannins. Such a treat at 27yrs. This very well could be the best bottle of Syrah I’ve ever tasted.

Deep dark garnet, nose is sporting Zinberry, Menthol and Mint. Serious palate, spicy, brambly Zinberry, cedar and leather. Anotter juicy core like the Dolinsek but this one just explodes with fresh Blackberry, Black Raspberry and White Pepper. Layered black and red fruits deftly managed with firm yet balanced tannins. The bright acid lifts the entire package to new heights. This is one seriously good bottle of wine. Oh the finish! ❤️

A new vineyard for Myriad to supplant Halcón which was lost in the vineyard sale. This one is in Bennet Valley up off Grange Rd.

Opened Sunday evening, poured off a couple glasses and am revisiting on Tuesday evening. Crimson red/translucent purple, nose has a little barnyard funk and forest floor going on. Red tart plum and creamy blueberry up front, silky texture, this just glides across the tongue. Lots of new oak on this which is kinda new for Mike and Syrah and it definitely changes the profile a bit adding a mocha note. Right now this is a gulper with that silky fruit bolstered by fresh acidity and rounded off with a chalky finish. The 14.5abv is managed well here. Overall I’m really enjoying this, even on a 97° day.

Dayum! Wonderful nose of dried rose petals and fig. Strawberry preserves, cedar, blood orange thread seamlessly to a fairly grippy finish. The acidity is spot on. The extended elevage softened the palate nicely. This is so enjoyable. What a tremendous Grenache, well done!
