Most enjoyable. Horse leather, barn funk, white pepper, faded blackberry fruit, wet rocks. My wife said “nope” after 1 sip, so I killed the mag over 3 days. Given my current stash level, age, health, and wife’s lack of appreciation of Cayuse, I’m going to let this 10+ year winery allocation go.

2010 Reynvaan Family Vineyards Syrah The Unnamed Walla Walla Valley
Intended only as a compliment, not plagiarism, PINOTPOUNDER's enthusiastic note below nails this wine and I can't improve on it except to add that this is less funky--and more elegant--than Reynvaan's other Rocks-based syrahs: "95+ points - This beauty has finally emerged from its shell and is hitting on all cylinders. The balance and structure of this effort is spot-on, and the complex notes unfold layer after layer. Dark fruits are wrapped around an impressive showing of secondary notes such as smoked meat, olive tapenade, and the ever so slight hint of dried violets. Both the nose and the palate display the notes. This may actually improve over the next year or two, and can easily hold on until the end of this decade in proper cellar conditions. This is a strong reference point option if you want to see exactly what Walla Walla fruit is capable of achieving without a hefty price tag." Oh, no sediment and 100% ready on removal of cork. At peak, but can cruise from here.
  • dsgris commented:

5/17/21, 2:54 PM - I went pretty strong on the early years and still have a few left. As others began to appreciate them and the prices rose in response, I stepped back and got the opportunity to start buying the neighbors wines.

Splash decant...Wow, super impressed with this Cab, particularly at this price point, as it drinks like a much more expensive bottle. Lovely currant fruit notes to open, but not at all heavy or oaky. Made with restraint, but still smooth as silk. ABV not at all visible, and tannic backbone intact. Almost certainly has many years of life ahead, but drinking very well now. Overall, just an extremely impressively made wine and outstanding QPR.

Served blind, initially thought this was ripe CA Pinot, but eventually redirected to sanity. Nose is rather refined, floral, with dried, somewhat aged red fruits and mild spice notes. Some cedar wood. Palate is smooth, mostly integrated, liquor quality, and finishes with a distracting metallic note that's slightly bitter. I assume this character is from some unintegrated whole cluster. Overall it's a nice wine, but shows a rather ripe/warm profile and less complexity than expected for a wine of this pedigree/cost.

Purchased a few from Full Pull from a "redacted" offering. Glad I did. This is tasty stuff and an easy-drinking quaffer. Great dark fruit, a little spicy oak, and not much in the way of tannins.

Vinturi into glass ... Bright red fruits to open, strawberries and raspberries on the nose and palate. Spice and earth on the mid. With nice pop of acid and some drying tannins that are well integrated, but present for backbone. Killer value and really well made wine. Great representative of a new world wine made in a more restrained, yet still easy drinking, style. Got two cases and not sure that was enough. Huge winner with definite potential for improvement.

Alas, this was my last bottle. I don’t think they make this wine anymore because they couldn’t give it away in the beginning, and it was a financial disaster ever since. Truly a shame because this wine is majestic. Tonight, this wine is as flamboyant as Cote Rotie at it’s best. It doesn’t have the power of great Hermitage, but what it lacks in force, it more than makes up with dexterity. Mushroom and earth combine with band-aids and bacon. Fragrant and beautiful.
  • dsgris commented:

6/10/20, 8:52 PM - I originally asked Michael Alberty @ StoryTeller if anyone makes an OR Syrah, then B-H and Matello. I think I bought some of the last B-H Deux Vert and continue to buy anything by Matello/Goodfellow. Todd makes some terrific PN these days.

So I didn’t give this the decant it likely needs to blow off the funky nose, but here goes. Translucent blood orange color. Nose is very unique, mostly in a not so nice way - mushrooms still growing in barnyard manure moss, smoked turkey meat and overripe raspberries. Guess this is “rocks funk” from the rocks district. Taste is similar, smooth and better than it smells. Tangy acidity on the finish only. Unique but not my style. Girlfriend wouldn’t drink it. About 85/86. In fairness, this wine is likely a couple years past it’s prime.
  • dsgris commented:

6/8/20, 3:04 PM - I started buying with the '08 and tapered off as the price started to rise. I have a bunch that I need to start drinking. I do not mind a little funk, but now prefer a more restrained wine. '11 is a good year that I like & buy.

  • dsgris commented:

6/9/20, 9:26 AM - I started drinking a lot of WA Syrah about that time, liking a full bodied fruity wine, since then I have taken to OR PN, so a lot of these Syrah are languishing in the cellar. They do make good gifts and sharing with other who like a more bold, fruity wine.

36 mo. 100% new oak, and it shows. They must have wanted to give this wine everything it could take a la Cult Napa style. The quality of fruit here is notable as is its intensity and depth. That oak is a nuisance though, adding an ashen, bitter quality to the finish after the coconut oil and skittles entry and mid. Creme of cassis,. black cherry and some floral notes abound on the wide spreading palate. This seems to be dominated by the Cabernet in its blend. Full bodied, the balance of acid, fruit, and alcohol is poised, however the oak, again, throws the whole askew. Plenty will love this I'm sure.
  • dsgris commented:

5/31/20, 11:45 PM - It's been years since I tasted one of these, only a few left. I've moved on the AFWE PN these days. I remember opening one and just letting the bouquet waft out. They needed a couple of days open and got good and took a week to fade. I will just gift the remaining to the younger crowd who will more better appreciate them.

  • dsgris commented:

6/3/20, 6:53 PM - AFWE refers to a term coined by Parker, Anti Flavor Wine Elite, as a put down, then taken by those of us liking a more balanced restrained wine compared to a fruit bomb.

Double decant. As always from Rasa, you can count on the fact that this is quality fruit and made with great care. I was hoping it would be just a cab/syrah blend, but as it turns out its a true kitchen sink blend. 7 varietals from 9 sites... As such, its a bit muddled and lacks focus. Not a bad Tuesday night bottle at this early stage. Room for improvement, but Im not sure I will allocate much space in my small cellar to find out.

Day two: enjoyed this quite a bit more the second time around. Its more rounded and has a start and a finish that I was missing. This suggests that the wine needs more time on its belly? Moving forward will have to remember to give a long decant if possible.

This is really lovely now. A tight restrained nose with notes of blackberries/black cherries -- there is a brooding element of dark wood. All of these flavors carry over to the palate, which has some nice bright acidity that lifts the fruit up and makes it a bit brighter. A lot of power and restraint here -- and a long lovely finish. I think I am discovering that 2011 is one of my favorite WA syrah vintages!

Opened this bottle on 7/9, drank all but the last two inches in the bottle and stored it in the fridge with original screwcap on top. Then forgot it until today. That's 16 days and it's well worth noting that this wine is better now than when initially opened, less tomato and more berry with cool spices on the fringe, and no sign of decay. Would not have guessed this wine to be a long-hauler, but clearly it is. Impressive!

Tasting note on second day open; first was still closed. Dark violet but medium opacity. Really nice typicity and knocks the socks off of some Northern Rhones that are multiple times the price. Top note of blue berries and violets. Middle note of blood and olive brine. Base note of long lingering chocolate and vanilla bean orchid flower. Strong mid-pallet with a lingering and long finish. Some heat just barely noticeable at 14.7 abv; I had to try to notice it. Fine mostly resolved tannins--but much better on day two. Great qpr.

Our 3rd bottle of 16 - now in a great drinking window, mature and softening and time to seriously put this into the drinking rotation. This bottle was not decanted - would recommend a 30-60 minute decant. Inky black color. As the wine aerated and opened up the initially somewhat closed nose opened up with warm dark and fruit forward notes. Still a very big wine but well balanced, balanced oak present and tannins now well integrated and softer then on previous bottles. On the front the palate is more fruit forward with black cherry and plum, on the mid-late palate more blackberry / blueberry and violet with a hint of smoke and a long lingering aftertaste. Has at least another 3-5 good years to go with proper cellaring and hats off to the wine making team at Rasa for yet another great effort !! A really great QPR wine at our original CT price.

11/3/18, 9:00 AM - I'll drink to that, half way through my original 9 bottles. Definitely compares to wines double the price. Thanks to Scott for making this happen with the Rasa folks. While I drink more OR Pinot these days, I get a lot of street cred when I open one of these for friends and family.

I haven't been drinking enough Cabot. This wine was tough sledding in its youth, but now it is smoky and sultry with blackberry and bacon while still showing the red fruit and acid of its youth. It could still use some more time to unwind even a little more, but I suspect it is close to apogee. It features more and acid and a little less stuffing than some other vintages.

Very pretty Muscadet, enjoyed alongside artichokes and rye bread. Very nice pairing, the wine showed more chalky and lemon flavors, pairing nicely with the earthiness of the artichokes. Bright acidity and a crisp finish, delicious.

9/29/18, 8:32 AM - We did a comparison with some local Melon which were quite good, but this rose above the others. Liked so well by a neighbor, I gave her a bottle to take home.

Decanted 1 hour, I am not surprised that this was bested by a Carlisle Sonoma Coast syrah at my last high/low blind tasting. This was enjoyable as a full throttle modern syrah. Great fruit and rich full-bodied modern appeal, although not very sophisticated. I would like to know if it is a mistake to drink these down, because I see nothing but negatives for this wine going forward, and I wish I hadn't bought so many, even at a reduced price.

9/11/18, 10:23 PM - Some people love them, others do not. Hard to tell unless you sample them. My palate has changed over the years and full bodied wine are no longer appealing. I quite buying several years a go and am just waiting for the fruit to fade, then drink away the error of my ways.

Not enjoyable at all - very disappointed. No harmony or balance. Very weedy with intense barnyard overtones. Where is the fruit? After one day in the cellar - it just fell apart.

Given the price of this wine, the length of time on the waiting list (great marketing!) and the ridiculous shipping charges for wines (over $20 per bottle) and you have to order and pay for a year in advance - I'm done.

I'm getting tired of wineries with highly allocated wines, nickel and diming their core customer base to death. Good luck

9/11/18, 10:31 AM - Have yet to drink any of mine, hope they fair better than yours. Will wait a few more years, though I am not hot on Syrah these days, others love them, but a bit steep tariff for gifting.

Popped and poured. Complex aromas of spice, earth. Sappy flavors of black fruit. Tobacco and red pepper notes in the finish.

Rich, complex, firm backbone, great staying power. The CT drinking window currently ends in 2017, but this absolutely shows no sign of fading and may even develop further. Sadly, this is my only bottle.

Final of 3 bottles purchased via auctions for around 50 per. I've now picked up several other vintages; hope they over-deliver as these did.

Wow. Great bottle for the money. A savory syrah -- smoke, ham, then shifting to umami and olive over time as it opens up. Yum!

Light amber with some white peach on the nose. Tart fruit, medium body, some rhubarb with a bit of rs to temper the acid, Kiwi fruit along with the white peach and sour sorrel. Clean and refreshing with some lemon on the finish.

6/4/18, 2:41 PM - I've commented before that some of my descriptors come from my early years living on the family farm where my cousins pointed out native foods growing in the pasture and local woods. Himalayan or evergreen blackberries, huckleberries and sorrel being a few along with salmonberries and blackcaps(raspberries). I have a glass a night and it develops differing flavors each time as it gets more air. I just leave corked on the counter and follow the development.
