2010 Mueller Pinot Noir Emily's Cuvée Russian River Valley

Best days are behind this. Some sulphur / burnt rubber smells that blew off quickly. Nose heavy on cherry and clove, along with some dried tobacco leaf. Cherry and allspice dominate the palate. Good but somewhat monolithic. I have enjoyed Mueller PN more when they are about 5 years old. Drink up!
Score: 87. Relative to expectations: -

I just opened a delightfully fresh 2010 Emily's that displays bright fruit that is nothing like the bottle in your tasting note.

Horrid. Worst wine I have bought in years. Stewed fruit and high alcohol. I will remove my score based on the possibility of outlier bottle variation.

3/24/23, 9:53 PM - Perhaps you had a flawed bottle instead of a horrid bottle worthy of a 79 which out of line with community scores ??

Very smooth
  • bdhanna commented:

2/13/23, 6:18 PM - 52 points for very smooth? Not within the conventional scoring practice most on CT follow. If the wine was flawed, then rate it as flawed; please do not berate it so and still provide a positive comment.

corked, too old
  • bdhanna commented:

8/27/22, 1:03 PM - If you find a wine to be corked, please do not provide a numeric score. If the wine is flawed, you should check the flawed box instead of skewing the average score. You may still write comments on a flawed bootle, especially since you scored the same wine 90 points one year earlier. By the way, a corked wine has nothing to do with its age; young wines can be corked too.

Decanted 2 hours. This is youthful Pinot noir. Red fruit, strawberry jammy, herbal notes, finishes with burnt oak notes. It’s really fruity. A-

Still trying to make sense of this one. I'm a big fan of Spanish Garnachas in general, and I have had others from Extremadura while traveling between Mérida and Sevilla. I was hoping for strong red/black fruit coupled with typical Spanish dryness. This just tastes funky: some faint red fruit (raspberry?) up front that quickly becomes overpowered by herbal notes. A lingering finish, but I can't pick out anything specific except for wood/tannin. We ordered 6 bottles from Last Bottle and opened 2 last night, just to make sure the first bottle wasn't off. We'll lay the rest down for a while and hope that they morph into something more palatable. This wine has enough structure that this should still evolve over the next year. I really *wanted* to like this. Would love to read a rebuttal to my review.

11/21/21, 1:38 PM - I appreciate you note and I agree; I really wanted to like this Grenacha more than I actually did. I did detect the faintest hint of bandaid or maybe green peppercorn, a flaw I did not obsess over and did not include in my tasting note. I gave it an 89 and had purchased only one other bottle which I will open in 5+ years. My note follows:
"I consumed this Evandria limited edition over four days in a kitchen counter test for agabllity of this wine. This $14 Grenacha from LastBottle held up to the test; fruit forward early and found an earthy backbone as it softened. Perfect composite cork, easily removed. Dark ruby color with medium clarity. Aromas of raspberry, cherry, and baking spice with flavors of black cherry pomegranate, and a touch of white pepper with a medium finish. This wine needs time despite the 6 month in oak barrels and could benefit from decanting. Good fruit from Extremadura, a western Spanish region bordering Portugal and good winemaking by Bodegas Coloma."

Nose of clear red fruit. Charry, strawberry. Some nice acidity.
When drunk it has a very silky start, the fruit stays, becomes more robust towards the back of the tongue. Then beautifull spices, laurel, good acidity.
Soft and smooth tannins

12/21/20, 7:19 PM - A 75 point score generally indicates some major shortcoming in the wine. However, your note does not indicate any negative qualities. A 75 point score is inconsistent with the remainder of the community, as well as, my impression of this wine.

Declining color, burnt tires at first, very unbalanced. After 2 hours gained some balance but sweet flavors dominate.

4/1/20, 7:08 PM - i'm not sure what your review means, not very helpful.
How could you score this Grenache so low?
Are you sure your review was for the 2010 Summerland Grenache?
Could it have been a flawed bottle?

Smoke of '08 Anderson Valley just won't go away. Tried one two years ago, really rough then. Improved a little since then, but the smoke taint is still there. This wine should never have been bottled. Duckhorn should have bulked it out like many other premium Anderson Valley Pinot Noir producers did. I don't know when I will open the last '08 Migration, perhaps at the end of a large party when friends are less critical. I am scared to try my Goldeneye Pinot, I guess they are next.
  • bdhanna commented:

2/18/20, 1:56 PM - All my 2008 Goldeneye and Migration are now gone. My opinion on quality did not change, these were flawed wines. I never understood why Duckhorn released these 2008 Pinot Noirs.

Duckhorn could not escape the smoke in Anderson Valley the summer of 2008. Most premium Pinot Noir producers bulked out their Anderson Valley fruit in 2008. The smoke taint dominates this wine with acrid aromas and sharpness on the tongue. I wish I did not have two more bottles to suffer through. The second label "Migration" faired slightly better and have improved slightly with time. I'm not sure the Goldeneye will improve with more time.

Vegetal on the nose. Not my favorite. Flat in the throat. Pleasant but unassuming in character. Some minerality. Not a biggie.
It smells like flint, forest floor, mushroom and mineral. The body is light/medium. The wine has linear texture. The wine finishes short. The wine has medium acidity.

Amazingly unpleasant. Cork broke but butt was retrievable. Cloudy dark red with brownish tinge. The bouquet has flowers and fruit but is marred by volatile acidity, which did not blow off. Red fruit and vinegar on the palate. This goes down the drain, I can't even cook with it. Shame on Last Bottle!
  • bdhanna commented:

1/7/15, 4:31 PM - I have no vested interest in Macrae or Last Bottle, but, I am confident you had a flawed bottle. You might should indicate that you had a flawed bottle instead of panning the points with a 50. My tasting experience was much better. It is not too late to edit your review if you care to do so.

Interesting blend of Syrah and Sangiovese. I think the sangiovese flavors dominate: quite fruity, not much pepper/spice. Overall, a nice wine for the money.
