Dumb phase, very remote. Or maybe a bad bottle? Finally revealed fruit and flavor after 12 + hours, and was quite decent with mild cherry pit and leather/worcestershire sauce, more suggestive of Pinot Noir than GSM. Best at 64 - 66 F. Overall somewhat lacking in structure, extract and decisiveness, at this time. This style of winemaking, aiming for freshness and zest, seems best drunk younger. 85-87.

9/9/15, 11:29 AM - based on your review, sounds like a bad bottle. I would generally also recommend drinking (if sound) at normal cellar temps of 58 based on my experience. Sent you my contact info to get a replacement.

Wines At Our Table; Week of September 20, 2015; 9/7/2015-9/20/2015: Dark ruby color with cherry, pomegranate, white pepper, and spice aromas with an appealing wet stone note. On the palate, it's light-bodied and fresh cherry, pomegranate, and spice flavors with a bit of a savory character. More akin to Burgundy than Rhone. 12.5% alcohol Blend of 45% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 25% Syrah. Fermented on native yeasts Aged 10 months neutral French oak

9/9/15, 11:27 AM - thanks for the review Martin. I am responding to Wilypod's notes.

    - the pastoral rouge is not meant to compete with CA "GSM"s and why I don't call the wine that. (nor is it limited to those 3 varieties.) Its a completely different expression of a Grenache base blend, lighter, more vibrant etc. (the 2012 is 12.5 % alc.)

    - I am honestly quite surprised at the 3 bad bottles, and have sent you a note elsewhere. The wines typically age very well, and we have few reports of spoilage though we do get the occasional off bottle. It sounds like they are cellared, but I am curious, I assume temperature controlled? Like many minimal intervention wines, they don't do well with heat fluctuation, or temps over the mid 60s, especially the 2011 vintage.
The wines are never released with VA, as I would never do that, so if VA was present, something has occurred to develop, such as heat. Given the 2012 Grenache was sterile filtered, that should near be impossible. Love to chat live, and will also send replacements if reach out at william@twoshepherds.com
    thanks!

VA. The contents definitely recall the delicious wine I drank last year, but there is a level of volatile acidity that really makes the jaw clench.
  • SonomaWilliam commented:

9/9/15, 11:21 AM - hi Wilypod. I sent you a note as well on another wine. There was no VA in this wine when released, so something has happened in transit, as it stores well. Contact me at the email I sent, and we will work to replace it - thanks! William.

I've enjoyed two bottles of this wine, the last about a year ago. Unfortunately this bottle is tainted by VA. Second Two Shepherds red wine in a row to be so afflicted, the other being a 2011 Syrah Mourvedre blend.

Comment: The corks of both might be a problem. I lay my wines in a cool cellar horizontally to keep the wine in contact with the cork. The Two Shepherd corks seem to have no elasticity left within when they are removed. Most corks, at least on younger wines, expand to recover something of their pre-compressed state when removed from the bottle. These corks do not do so.

9/9/15, 11:18 AM - Hi Wilypod, I just came across this, wish I had known earlier. Both scenarios are very unusual, and a bit surprised, as we spot check our wines regularly, as well as receive feedback from our customer base. Especially the 2012 Grenache, as we upgraded the corks, not that the MA Silva 2011 cork was low quality. I am curious, did you aquire these from Weygdandt or from me directly? (I can't tell your IRL identity from this :) )
Also the 2012 Grenache was sterile filtered (unlike the 2011), so VA developing in the bottle is a surprise, and it definately didn't have VA when shipped.

I am always happy to replace spoiled wines, and am happy to in this case. Please contact me at william@twoshepherds.com and we will make arrangements. thanks!

Clear, med ruby color to a clear rim, med minus color concentration but viscosity is med plus. No staining. Nose is medium plus, warm raspberries, fresh strawberries, fresh blackberries. Lavender, sage, dried grasses, sandalwood. Palate is dry, confirms raspberries, strawberries and slightly underripe blackberries. Sage, mint, a touch of eucalyptus. Med plus acid, med to med minus body, med plus finish. A beautiful wine definitely outside the mold of most Rhones from the region. Light, easily drinkable and a superb food wine.

Elegant, balanced, refined. Almost Pinot-like. Best American Grenache along with The Sandler Boer vineyard. Beautiful bottle.

#RRSFBAY (Washington, DC): Clean and fresh on the notes, with peach, green apple, saline note. On the palate, crisp but creamy with whipped honey and sea salt notes. Light and crisp but not weak. I get some interesting waxy-walnut notes, maybe some white tea with honey. A blend of 50% Roussanne, 35% Marsanne, 10% Viognier and 5% Grenache Blanc, fermented and aged in neutral oak. A bit more depth than I remember from the 2011.

Don't have a ton of experience with straight Grenache Blanc, but this one's clean, broad palate with great structure and fresh fruit makes me want to explore more of them.

Did not take formal notes. A bit restrained and timid, especially on the nose; would've liked more fruit. Did open up over time. Nice acidity, but I could've used even more. I might recommend letting this one breathe, as the last glass was better than the first -- more fruit, more revealing aroma, sharper acidity.
  • SonomaWilliam commented:

4/9/14, 10:39 AM - glad you enjoyed the wine. I do let the wine go through full ML as I feel it contributes to the unique style and softens the acidity a bit, contributes to mouthfeel. Its ~3.3 pH even after ML :)
Many feel the same, its better with air, or 2nd day, and if you age it, gains considerable complexity.

#RRSFBAY (Washington, DC): Aromas of seashell, green apple, some papaya, white flowers, sea salt and an herbal tea note. On the palate, this is creamy but so fresh from the acid. Tart green apple, green melon and lychee flavors mix with mineral and all sorts of sea shells. Long, but fresh and lean, showing lots of nuance.

A Taste of Two Shepherds: Ruby color with expansive blackberry, black currant, spice and a hint of black licorice aromas. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, and harmonious with a bit of grip that I enjoyed. It shows fresh blackberry, black raspberry, plum and spice flavors. Long finish. Blend of 55% Syrah (Saralee’s Vineyard, Russian River Valley), and 45% Mourvèdre (El Dorado) Aged 10 months in neutral French oak. 13.8% alcohol. SRP - $38. 40 cases produced

Garnet with medium viscosity in the glass. Candied nose of oak, cherry and stewed plum and red fruit. Medium body with preponderate oak on the palate. Stewed cherry and red fruit. Med-short finish. Showing fake to me.
