Georg Breuer - Vertical Riesling Nonnenberg 2001,2006-2018 + X (@Private location): *** brief note from vertical tasting ***
Glass: Gabriel Standard
Decanted for about 4h. Deep ruby color. Beautiful intense Pinot nose with fine red fruit, herbs, meat. Deep and dense. Beautiful ripe fruit, balanced by medium+/high acidity. Some coffee, herbs, speck, medium+ silky tannin. Juicy and long. Will continue to improve for another decade. 93-94

Popped and poured. Beautiful wine, but for me the weakest in this vertical. Some slightly green notes, broad warm fruit. But also dense and mineral. 91

Popped and poured. What a surprise for this complicated vintage! Nose with some botrytis, vanilla, but also lots of crushed stones.
Very deep, dense and mineral. Astonishingly lean, not broad and not too much botrytis. Very zesty, some bitte orange notes, some green, harsh notes. Long. 92-93

Popped and poured. Clear, pale golden color. Beautiful flight and I preferred the 2009 vintage. 2007 will be the better wine on the long run, but it needs to blend in its sweetness.
Beautiful nose, floral, herbaceous, smoky. Complex and multi-layered. On the palate great substance and energy, but also some noticeable residual sugar that needs to blend in. Dense, deep and beautiful tension. Very long. 93-94++

Beautiful Singerriedel with lots of extract, energy and depth. 13,5% abv. Zesty, smoked meat, great mineral core, very long. This bottle was maybe not 100% perfect and at its full peak. Still a wonderful experience! 95

Popped and poured. Clear, pale yellow color. Even better nose than 2017, because already quite open. Ripe yellow stone fruit, grapefruit, lime, herbs. Deep, dense and very beautiful.
The noticeable residual sugar is well balanced by the high and racy acidity. Very mineral and dense. Wonderful fruit, herbs and zests. Beautiful balance. Round and joyful. Very long finish. 93+

Popped and poured. Clear, pale golden color. Woderful deep, mineral and complex nose, not even close to full development. On the palate a monster in the making, but still rather closed or shut down. Vibrant energy, high acidity, enormous extract, very precise and focused. Lots of chalky mineral. Very long! Great potential. 92+++ Wait 5+ years.

Evening with friends (@Private location, Solingen): Glass: Sophienwald
Decanted for about an hour. My first Barbera from 2016. At the beginning a bit fruity, with time and air in the glass it developed more and more complexity and elegance. For a Barbera the high tannin and acidity is wonderfully integrated. The wine was lovely balanced and what amazed me especially was, that I did not recognize the 15% abv at all! Certainly very young, so either give it 2-3h of decanting time or wait for a few more years. Beautiful wine. 90-91+ PQR is a bit mediocre.

Popped and poured, tasted blind. Clear, youthful pale yellow color. Lots of pear in the nose. On the palate at first a lot of tannin and hints of oak. Mineral, lots of pear. My first guess: A young, very good and fresh Chardonnay. Boy, so wrong… With time and air it became more and more clear, that it was a Riesling. The tannin vanished and the classic Riesling fruit emerged. Very lean, powerful and a bit smoky. I thought Nahe and SF, but could not nail vintage and vineyard. Wonderful wine already. So juicy. Airy, but powerful, very mineral, wonderful fruit, tension, balance. Long and lingering. Bottle was emptied in no time. Has at least another decade of positive development ahead! 93-94+

Perfect bottle. The color was amazingly young: pale yellow color. Exactly like the 2013 Halenberg we had before.
Fully developed, medium+ intense nose. Classic Zilliken. You either love it or hate it. Petrol, smoke, peat, slate combined in a unique and deeply complex melange. I really love it!
On the palate almost dry. The sweetness has blended in, the medium+ acidity is still perfectly integrated. Beautiful mineral notes, yellow stone fruit, some petrol, hints of peat and smoke. Long. We wondered and discussed, how this bottle will continue to age. Under perfect storage conditions, I would give it at least another decade… 92-93. My best bottle of the three that I bought.

From half bottle. Decanted for about 1,5h. Clear, deep amber color. Nose was not very complex and intense, though I was a bit disappointed until I had my first sip. On the palate it is for sure Yquem. Elegance, power, balance, complexity without being fat or cloying. Very long and lingering. Wonderful Yquem that could age for some more decades, but makes so much joy to drink now! 94-95

Drunk over three days. Much better bottle than my first one. Good fill level. Clear, deep golden color. Clean, medium+ intense and fully developed nose. Dark, smoky notes with some spices and yellow fruit in the back. Really special and wonderful!
Dry, medium acidity, perfectly integrated. 13% abv. Medium body. On the palate some vegetable notes, white pepper, smoke, apricot and some mature notes (hard to describe, no cellar mold, just aged with dignity and grace). Very dense, perfect harmony and balanced, very round and soft. Finish is also very compact, dark and long. A wonderful experience. This bottle did not decline on day 2 or three. Very beautiful! 93

From a perfect bottle. Popped an poured, drunk over 10 days. Clear, deep and glowing golden-amber color. Clean, medium+/pronounced and fully developed nose. Classic Grünhaus notes, surprisingly with some petrol that went away with air. Not as opulent as other Auslesen from this vintage, rather lean, but very complex and deep.
On the palate medium-sweet, beautifully balanced by the high, perfectly integrated acidity. 9,5% abv. Surprising notes of fresh Grapefruit, some Aperol (Bitter Orange), but also tangerine, garden herbs and spices. Very dense, great tension. Lean and very compact. Even on day 10 it was an amazing wine. Very long with bitter orange and spicy flavors. Certainly at its full peak. Great wine! 95-97

Clear, pale lemon-golden color. Clean, medium intense, youthful nose. Fresh, some pears, some vegetables, apple, some herbs, slight hints of oak (?) and some spices. Quite complex and nice.
Dry, medium+, well integrated acidity. 12,5% abv. Good grip and balance. Creamy mouthfeel. Very mineral, spicy and some ripe pear. Long finish. Drinkable now, but it seems rather young and not fully developed to me. Give it 2-3+ years to fully develop. 88+, Good PQR

Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: Summer tasting (Asperg): Clear, medium-deep golden color. Very fresh, young and intense nose of rhubarb, quince, acidity, mineral notes. Dense and complex.
Oily texture, very good balance of sweetness and extreme, but wonderful integrated acidity. Lots of Rhubarb and exotic fruit. Great tension. Very juicy and round. Still very young. Looong and lingering. Potential for at least 2 more decades. 94-95+

Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: Summer tasting (Asperg): Tasted blind. Clear, youthful golden color. Developing nose with some slight petrol, tangerine, dill, some cassis. Very light and airy.
On the palate dense, but not as much as I would expect from an Auslese of this vintage. Some vanilla, fine yellow fruit, tangerine, herbs. Medium+ acidity, wonderful integrated. Still young and with at least 10+ more years of potential. Medium+ length. 92-93

On the palate dense, deep and spicy. Nice ripe fruit, medium acidity and high, a bit drying tannin. Lots of harsh notes from stems. A bit rough and edgy. 12,5%. Don’t know, how this will age. The tannin needs another decade, but what will happen with the fruit? 86-88

Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: Summer tasting (Asperg): Tasted blind. Clear, pale golden color. Funky, strange but fascinating nose: resin, myrrh, juniper, rosemary, menthol. Never had anything like this before.
On the palate rather lean, tart acidity and again extremely freaky: Earthy/soil notes, medicinal notes, menthol, wormwood, herbs, juniper. What is that? Do I like it? I don’t know. But certainly a very interesting wine. Good length. Very interesting experience! 87-88

Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: Summer tasting (Asperg): Klare, mittlere Erdbeerfarbe.

Popped and poured, drunk over 12 days. Right after opening a very dominant and not pleasant citrus note in the nose an on the palate. Left at least half of the bottle in the fridge and drank if over the next 12 days. On day twelve it started to show, why the guys from MFW rated it with 98 points:
Nose starts to get really complex with some tobacco, woodruff, fresh lime, herbs, slate.
Medium-dry, high-acidity that is still racy, but not as unbalanced as in the first days. Very fresh and young flavors of lime, herbs, stony mineral notes, woodruff and hints of green tobacco leafs. Lots of grip and tension, very dense, concentrated and with lots of extract. Quite long and lingering. Keep it for at least 5+ years to fully shine. 90-91++
