4/5/24, 4:40 PM - Mike isn't making this any more? We were introduced to this by his wife Leah who mentioned that Quivet was a partnership with friends. The website also mentions Mike as a partner and winemaker.
4/6/24, 7:42 AM - Feel free to ping me offline at david.goldberg@toyota.com
4/6/24, 7:41 AM - Yes, thanks for taking one for the team.
4/3/24, 6:02 PM - Thanks CH! Too funny and now corrected. One of these days I'll stop blaming siri and actually check my dictation before posting. "Some people claim that there's a woman to blameBut I know, it's my own damn fault"-Jimmy Buffett
3/31/24, 6:27 AM - Rich - Not sure I'd say it's super-young but depending on condition it certainly has life ahead of it. I continued drinking this ~ 3hrs after posting the note, 6 hrs slow-ox with little change over the window. I've purchased HSS from the winery since the '99 vintage and believe many have the ability to last 15-20+ years. When moving from SoCal to TX 7 years ago my wine sat on a loading dock for 2 days waiting for the refrigerated carrier and it seems some of my HSS's were adversely affected; you'll see many of my HSS select notes indicate this, though I didn't last night.Had an '04 over Christmas and it was solid. IMO, few US wines age longer than a Dunn Howell Mtn or Quilceda Creek Cab (Wa)
3/31/24, 2:05 PM - Rich - Would also add if you're not familliar with Quilceda Creek, try to! Its mostly direct to consumer and some restaurants, but it rates along w HSS, Insignia and other "acquire-able wines" as consistently top-scoring but for less than 1/2 the price. And their CVR (Columbia Valley Red) runs alongside Lewelling as one of the best values to be found, ~55/bottle; if from Napa it'd be $100 easily. Sometime's I've seen Total Wine carry CVR in the Dallas area for $70, but I've been buying 12-18 bottles annually as our favorite daily drinker for decades.
3/18/24, 5:18 AM - DQ - Hope you have better luck than ours. Cork was absolutely pristine with a faint if classic bordeaux nose.....for about 10 seconds.
3/17/24, 7:05 AM - Looks like you had quite the '89 tasting, congrats! My son's birth year, I only had a few Dunn's that weren't good when opened for his wedding but as most were purchased on the secondary market decades ago and have moved numerous times across country hard to tell if they're just passed prime or damaged. Appreciate the other wines to consider!
3/17/24, 7:38 AM - Thanks BDC, started perusing some of your notes and there's a mix of memories and fantasies. Look forward to perusing more once my trip planning and taxes are done! While I've followed you for awhile I didn't realize the breadth and depth of your notes till I'd seen how many you posted....while I'm envious, my liver might be a bit nervous!
3/16/24, 1:56 PM - Thanks for this AG. I'm a big merlot fan adn while I've driven by Turnbull dozens of times I've never tried their juice. Will try to keep this in my mind for one of our upcoming visits (have 2 planned)
3/16/24, 5:51 PM - ALWAYS looking for value....would be great to add to the few undisputed Napa values (Lewelling, Drinkward, Foley merlots....). Certainly others too but NOT ENOUGH!!!
3/15/24, 4:38 PM - Just came across this and agree w DC; thanks for the guidance on both counts!
3/8/24, 5:34 PM - Great detail on your oxidation regimen here, really appreciate it. Was ready to pop one of two remaining bottles but given the hour I'll save it for another day when I've got more foresight.
3/3/24, 6:42 PM - Hurts when I think how much time we spent focused largely on NapaCabs 'cause that's what we knew and where our friend-base existed in our "Happy Place." We truly spent years trying to "understand" Tuscany with friends who enjoyed some very nice Italian wines, and it took several trips on our own (including tasting great values like this at Jackson's facility in Calistoga) to "get it." The more we understand the more we enjoy. God Bless!
3/4/24, 5:15 PM - THANKS for the reco CH, and for the offer!! When we lived in Denver we had a great group that did offlines and we really miss them. Will definitely reach out if we're in the Vancouver area!
2/25/24, 8:31 AM - I know most Lewelling is sold through their mailing list but have to ask where you purchased. Ive never found a vintage of their wines particularly heavy or syrupy and am wondering if there was something off in its handling/storage before you received it??
2/25/24, 8:20 AM - Thanks for the detailed note and decant suggestions Oldwines. Still have a few of these, including a 375. Might be time to pop several half bottles for side-by-side comps. Cheers!
2/18/24, 8:37 AM - Not farmiliar w B Cellars until seeing this note and looking them up. Seems interesting and love perusing notes from friends to discover potential additions to the cellar. Thanks!
2/18/24, 10:36 AM - Thanks Mark appreciate the insights and will definitely use the reference if we connect. Have two Napa trips with different friends this year and always looking for some new finds, though at our age we should stabilize or inventory level....good thing Mrs DandR hasn't found CT's new graphs! However her chef-instructor also periodically opens industry experiences if we ask, though if a wine isn't distributed in our area it is tough to ask....
2/19/24, 4:57 PM - Thanks DC, esp like the idea of not having to wait forever. Sounds like I'll have to visit during one of trips this year!
2/18/24, 7:00 AM - Long been a fan of Dunn, one of the first wines I began seeking out decades ago. Did this need a few minutes for any funk to blow off upon opening or was this a solid pnp? And whats a maty pizza if i can ask?
2/18/24, 8:33 AM - Funny and thanks, was trying to think of potential siri miscues but didn't come up w meaty.....happy sunday!
2/18/24, 7:27 AM - Yes, I shot Lisa a note several months ago inquiring about the next release date, and while I can't find the email my recollection was that it should be within a month.
1/30/24, 4:53 PM - Thanks for the catch and heads-up CH. Funny, i started the note on the CT app and saw the 100 point score shortly after posting. I then adjusted the score to 93 but obviously did/neglected to do something so that it didn't register. Updated. And I only drank 1/2 the bottle when I posted the adjusted note so its not like I was sauced!
1/25/24, 6:34 PM - Agree with the general window of 10 years and my recent experience with this vintage as well. However I popped my last 2006 within the last year and while on the softer side it was still solid! Cheers!
1/21/24, 10:34 AM - Ive seen the Igneous bottling in one or two stores around me but haven't tried one yet. Thanks!
1/13/24, 8:11 PM - Its really a decent pour, if a bit extracted/jammy. If i could find this at a price point similar to Quilceda's CVR I'd buy a bunch, even though we're overflowing at this point. Took a spontaneous trip to Loire ( only major wine region in France we hadn't visited) and the missus discovered SHE DOES LIKE Chennin / Sauv Blanc, just not from CA or to a lesser extent, New Zealand
1/13/24, 7:21 AM - Thanks for this note, have only one these left myself. I am curious about your bourbon marinade....we're in a rut of continuously sorta smoking TT's in our egg. Appreciate if you'd share how you handle yours!
1/13/24, 9:45 AM - Much appreciated Alan, THANK YOU!!
1/13/24, 10:10 AM - I see you've just recently begun posting and seems like many of your posts are wines I have as well, even if different vintages. Encourage you to keep posting and appreciate your detailed notes, they're great!
1/13/24, 7:16 AM - Thanks for this VG - I haven't tapped one of these in 4+ years and it might be time to revisit!
12/23/23, 6:38 AM - Hurricane vs Sharknado....something I haven't seen in a note until now, love your description!! While I'm not familiar with this label we're big fans of Howell Mtn properties and just received some of the 2018; really look forward to sampling this, and thanks again for the note.
12/8/23, 8:54 PM - Not to get too political, but the following is from the Plumpjack website. My wife and I have been to Napa 1-2x/yr for30+ years and have lived in So. Cal twice before my company relocated our HQ and 4k+ people to another state. In 1992, Gavin Newsom opened his first business, PlumpJack Wines, combining his passion for wine and his driving entrepreneurial spirit. Over the next decade, the PlumpJack Group began to grow under his leadership to include many of the restaurants, wineries, and retail establishments in the current portfolio. In 2003, Newsom was elected the 42nd Mayor of San Francisco, and in 2019 was sworn in as the Governor of California. He lives with his wife and First Partner, Jennifer Siebel-Newsom, along with their four children in Sacramento, California.
11/28/23, 6:57 PM - Thanks for the confirmation on this Mark and AGe. Hadn't heard of them until mentioned in Switchbacks most recent note and seems like a solid value. Will look to sample with them on our next visit.
11/22/23, 7:26 AM - Dunn Howell and a cheeseburger....that's living! Thanks for the note.
11/20/23, 8:11 PM - Serge - I've had my eyes on my bottle of this for awhile. Any more insights, ie did you decant, 90 mins slow ox, etc? Thanks for the added insights.
11/19/23, 3:52 PM - Randy Dunn would be embarrassed about what Caymus has become. Now add on all the family sub-brands....
11/15/23, 7:03 PM - Great note ZOSO and couldn't agree more. I've been buying QC since at least the 99 vintage when a friend first exposed me to them. Over time they've become our top holding and IMHO CVR - alongside Lewelling cabs - are far and away the best value, high quality cab/red blend in NA. Cheers and enjoy the reasonableness factor!
11/16/23, 2:46 PM - You'll find a number of Napa wines that'll have a Lewelling Vineyards designation. They've owned their land in St Helena since the 1860's or 70's and make ~2k cases/year for themselves, selling the rest, with a vineyard management co. being another large source of income. They sell their wines (waitlist) for $125/pair, one each of a Napa cab and Wight Cab , both from the same dirt just differnt plots. They offer 10% if they allocate you 6 pair ie case, which is amazing given the value and waitlist. They're really good people on top of a great wine. You may find some comments on CT that since Haley Wight, the newest generation, has taken on the winemaker role, the Lewelling's have gotten softer while the wine Haley makes for her own Hayfork label - also with Lewelling fruit - seems to be more rich than the Lewelling parent. But hers are 75 or 125/bottle vs 111 (disc) or 125/for two. Even if its gottten softer over the last 5 years its an amazing value and worth getting to know. Cheers!
11/6/23, 5:45 PM - Looks like quite a night with 3 Mascots in an evening. Not sure why these just appeared in my window when you popped them 5 weeks ago, but for my future benefit do you by chance recall the amount of air/decant you gave these?
11/4/23, 8:58 AM - Really curious to see if I have a different perspective when I pull the cork this evening, but the style has definitely changed since Haley took full charge of winemaking, with her Hayfork made with the same fruit a heartier wine than the Lewelling she also crafts. But i like the Beef Bourguignon idea; Rose made a great batch last weekend when the high temps barely hit 50.....man was that great!
11/5/23, 6:48 AM - As you may have seen I thought the balance of the bottle was a bit better but it really isn't the same wine it used to be. And honestly, while I do enjoy Carter and some of Mike Smiths' current wines, I find the ripe-fruit is at least offset by a healthy dose of oak; not the case in this Lewelling, which seems to have a shorter runway than prior vintages. Not sure if it was made for nearer-term drinking or what, I'll probably ask Haley during our next visit as there are more than a few of us who feel the same. Given the limited production I guess they can do what they want and just clear up the waiting list, but.....As for Caymus, that really transitioned from a reliably consistent restaurant wine to liquified Smuckers. Absolutely nothing there.
11/5/23, 12:03 PM - Funny, doubt we'll see that in their marketing material any time soon, and am sure Randy Dunn is appalled with the status of the brand he helped build.Have to ask.....when I think of Del Mar I think of CA or Fl, but your profile indicates you're in Colorado. Fled CA for CO, or what's the backstory on your CT handle?
11/1/23, 4:12 PM - Thanks for the note, and have to appreciate Dunn's ability to age a lifetime, esp the Howells. And great people to boot!
9/12/23, 10:50 AM - Agree w both of your comments and recognize our individual preferences. While I've always enjoyed the style/approach of CM's Estate, I've rarely purchased any of their other offerings and I too have cancelled my membership after 25+ years in their futures program. Better values to be found, and I've always been miffed at their unwillingness to do any barrel or pre-release sampling during tastings, a prime purpose of our Napa trips. Also nixed Shafer HSS after their buy-sell and price hike, which was hard to do as their '93 was our wedding wine and turned us on to collecting. That being said, I do enjoy CM Estate and their willingness to produce a softer European style cab rather than a Parker-appeasement, though I also enjoy my unfair share of high alcohol, extracted fruit bombs. And I've really benefitted from CT comments about the benefits of giving CME plenty of air regardless of its age.
10/31/23, 4:44 PM - Wow, record activity for a Tuesday afternoon. Love the dialogue and walks down memory lane....I had a bunch of 95 and 97 Cardinales, but the last were downed in 2010 with a note indicating it tasted more like a 2YO wine than 13. They were my ATBE finds, from a series of ABC Stores in Maui and the Big Island. One had them marked at $16; asked the manager to verify the price as "I believe these have to be mismarked." He said if you leave me one to try, take the rest and I'll call around to see who else has them in stock. Great memory!!
10/29/23, 10:39 AM - Definitely planning to pick up a few more bottles of this. Spire shows this still available for $60 which is a good QPR, but happy to use Rose's industry for a discount that makes it a solid value.
10/27/23, 10:30 AM - Ben - RS=residual sugar, as in sweet jam? Just hadn't seen that before as an acronym/abbreviation. Unrelated note, any idea of your "record" tasting day? I applaud your solid note-taking on so many wines, many of which I'm sure don't ever hit your shelves. But its appreciated adn educational!
10/26/23, 5:27 PM - Howell Mtn Zinn. Talk about a recipe for density....we're not big zin drinkers but can understand the similarity to a cab given the provenance.
10/26/23, 5:12 PM - Peech - thanks for the thorough details on decant time. This isn't the kind of wine one opens every day (at least not in my home!) so the decant experience is very helpful. Cheers!
10/23/23, 5:25 PM - Wow, impressive that an 11YO CF still needed that much time to emerge from its shell. Have always enjoyed Hourglass but their Bluelines have fallen off my purchase cycle as I've grown my Bdx/CdP/Italian, save some HGIII's for weekdays. But this gets me thinking....and i always appreciated that they'd let me purchase some 375's!
10/21/23, 6:34 AM - Really good note that gets the mind wandering early in the morning and puts a smile on my face! And yes, the Dunn definitely still needs some decant or slow-ox. Opened my last 95 Howell last weekend and its evolved beautifully over several hours, though I didn't decant out of fear that it might fall-apart.
10/21/23, 6:28 AM - Thanks Genghis. I've been looking at my last bottle of this for some time and with 3 years since my last tasting, sounds like its time. While I'm beginning to think about what I buy given my advancing age, can never go too deep on Quilceda overall and especially CVR.
10/16/23, 9:23 PM - Thanks for your note. When I last opened one of these almost a year ago to the day, I thought it needed three years. Appreciate the perspective and will let it continue. Just rest.
10/16/23, 9:20 PM - Love your analogy though I'd consider Mark's Haze or Daze labels as his entries, which are actually reasonable values in the < $100 range.Cheers!
10/15/23, 3:10 PM - Always appreciate details on decant/timing to help manage future tastings. Thanks for the notes!
10/14/23, 7:57 AM - Appreciate the note as it inspires me to research Covert. Unfamilliar with them but always on the hunt for a great CF. Look forward to sampling Bob Foley's forthcoming return to the varietal as well.
10/7/23, 8:24 AM - Great note Frank, still have 1 or 2 of these myself. I've been visiting w Kelly for many years and while I've always been heaviest on SR's Merlot and then the cab, she's always encouraged me to go deeper on the PS for all the reasons you noted. Happy weekend!
10/8/23, 6:40 AM - Kudo's on hanging on to your 99 that long.....if I still lived in Fullerton I'd fine some intriguing stuff to add to your event. Salut!
9/28/23, 7:23 PM - Thanks for taking one for the team. It'll be several months before I next head up there to sherpa the wine back home, along with the CVR we'll be able to purchase next week.
9/24/23, 7:34 AM - I like "late night pull but the score is legit" Looking through your notes, looks like you had a heckuva Friday evening...Salut!
9/24/23, 7:30 AM - Thanks for the note on this Scott. Most recently opened one of these nearly 3 years ago and also found it in an odd place. Will continue holding till someone else takes one for the team! Thanks again,
9/23/23, 9:52 AM - Thanks for the note, especially giving a sense of the ideal decant time. Only have one of these left so your comments are much appreciated!
9/21/23, 5:46 AM - Still have a few of these left.....and looking forward to their next release after the fire hiatus.
9/22/23, 6:01 AM - Only 15-18 on my front. I reached out to Lisa yesterday and she indicated that they planned to release the '21 during the 3rd week of Feb. I hadn't realized/recalled that they lost the 19's during the 2020 fires.
9/17/23, 3:48 PM - Thanks for the note. Appreciate any advice on decanting based on how the wine opened up during night 1; I've got a few of these and know Mike's style is strong and powerful. Wondering if it toned-down / opened up during your window. Thanks!
9/20/23, 5:08 AM - Thanks for the insight. And what's the bird in your profile pic?
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
