Well made, pleasant, with sweet fruit. A bit muddy on the palate, but a decent example of a fully mature Barolo.

2001 is turning out really well for Piedmont. Not sure what the vintage rating is, but at 19 years, these wines are showing beautifully.

This wine worked beautifully with rich, silky pork ragu. Just earthy and tannic enough to match. These are food wines, and hard to think they'd show as well on their own. But what a great match for the right dishes.

Lovely pinot. Crystalline color and terrific depth in the mouth.

A stunning wine. Nose was mind-boggling, deep with fruit and earth notes, minerals, iron, smoke. Mouthfeel was complete, fully mature, at peak. Beautiful balance and worked perfectly with duck confit and polenta. Very glad I bought a bunch of this before the prices went haywire.

What a great experience it was to drink this wine last night. Bottle was in great shape, with fill just a couple of cm below the cork. The cork was fully saturated and not easy to get out. Double decanted morning before service. Color was amazing - translucent garnet with some undertones of bricking. Nose - just perfect old Nebbiolo. Fruit was sweet, well delineated, with nice balance and strong finish. So often these old bottles under perform. Not last night.

Consistent showing. Well made in high modernist style that showcases ripe fruit and plush tannin but lacks typicity. For some, not a big deal. And I enjoy drinking these from time-to-time, but not a wine I could ever fall in love with.

Many 85s are showing their age, including Bartolo's classic Barolo, but this was just a terrific bottle. Double decanted the morning before service, it was crystalline clear soft ruby with bricking evident. The nose was everything you might want - waves of tar, rose petal, mineral, smoke, crushed berry fruit. Beautifully structured, with an ample finish. Very glad to have tasted this wine at full maturity, in its prime.

Totally fabulous. Double decanted the morning before service, and it showed beautifully. Still youthful color, with amazing nose of berry, spice, developing earthy notes, just a terrific perfume. In the mouth, quite complete, but still a long way from fully mature. I think this will improve yet, and look forward to tracking its path over the coming years/decades.

What happens to a modernist Barolo at age 30+? Lovely sweet fruit, reflects winemaker’s focus on ripeness and plush texture, but at the expense of the more mineral and earthy notes, and more assertive tannins, that mark more traditional winemaking.

Dropped the score quite a bit on this bottle. In contrast to the prior bottle, this one exhibited very little Nebbiolo typicity. There was a sweetness to the fruit that was not balanced by the tannin or leather, smoke, iron notes so common among older Barolo. The oak was still evident, but overall the impression was one of a plushness that is not at all what I expect or want - especially in a 96 Barolo. My reaction was to the style of winemaking, not the skill of the winemaker, but unlike the last one, I found this one less enjoyable because it strayed so far from what I'm looking for in an almost 25-year-old Barolo.

Really lovely rose. Light and lively, with enough body to let you know it's not an easy toss-off of a wine. Worth trying.

Okay. I've tried it. Was nice on a summer outing, but pored with food? A bit of an acquired taste that I have not yet acquired. Will give it another chance, or 2, but . . .

Showed amazingly well from a pristine magnum in OWC. Perfectly aged, classic older Nebbiolo from a vintage that many view as fading. Not this bottle. Just textbook tar and roses and sour cherry, with lively tannin and clear sweet fruit. A winner.

Fabulous Barolo. Dense, layered, balanced, structured, with fine tannins, tons of tar and iron, crushed berry fruit, with a long finish. Decanting from a 3L is quite a show. And in that format the wine aged beautifully. Loads of time ahead of it.

Oxidized. All 3 bottles purchased at the estate in Lebanon were oxidized. Chateau storage is probably not great. Still, I won’t buy older Musar white anymore.

Very well made by Vajra from a plot acquired from Baudana. Lovely sweet fruit, well-structured with fine tannins. Lively in the mouth. Will improve with more age, but fun to drink now.

My last bottle of this iconic wine opened for a simple New Year's dinner. Bottle in amazing condition. Bottom neck fill level. Good color. Cork sound. But it's clear that the wine is past peak now. Tertiary fruit is lovely, but faded. Tannin barely noticeable. Acid prominent. Yet it was a lot of fun to have the chance to taste this once more.

Best bottle of Musar I've had. Musar can be uneven. Had a bunch of clunkers. Not this one. Double decanted 2 hours before service. Beautiful clarity of crushed red fruit, spice, and distinct Lebanese notes of zaatar and olive wood smoke. Terrific. Love this vintage. One to look out for.

Beautiful. Love this old vine Gamay. Rusticity done right. Grainy tannins, dark, dense fruit that shows very clear, perfect with roast duck.

Opened beautifully - fully mature and unlikely to improve any further, but right now, lovely citrus, stone, straw notes, well balanced, non of the premox I've had in other Fevre 02 bottles.

Showing beautifully. At that lovely stage when the fruit is still showing youthful, fresh notes, but the wine overall is gaining the dimension and flavors of a mature Nebbiolo. Terrific.

Terrific Pinot profile, light- to mid-weight wine that still needs a few months to come fully together. Typically E&M freshness to the fruit and clarity in the mouth. Lively, vibrant wine. Nice.

My consistent rating for this wine, which is showing very well. Will it improve? I tend to think it won't. Right now, it's dense, layered, with acid to balance the sweetness, lovely citrus and quince, nice mineral, not cloying, but not light-footed, either. Not a vibrant or angular. And, not all that easy to match with food. On its own, however, after a meal, it makes a very nice dessert-like wine.

My reactions to Scavino are always complicated. These are often fabulous wines, great structure, pure, clear fruit, depth, tannin, mouthfeel. But you have to take them for what they are. If I judged them again classic Barolo criteria, I'd be more critical. But they are great to drink. I thought about selling them off as my tastes changed toward the traditional, but I'm glad I didn't. Digging into them has given me a chance to appreciate them for what they are.

From magnum. Really a beautiful example of a southern German Pinot. Beautiful nose, deft and balanced in the mouth. Soft garnet. Intense berry fruit. Lacks a bit of the pinot sappiness I like, but still, a hell of a wine.

Showing youthful, as I'd expect from a 99 Chianti Classico. But the winemaking style really gets in the way here. Primo was one of the winemakers who went overboard, imo, with an interventionist approach. And as someone else posted, it led to wines that lack depth and dimension, that are overworked and don't pair well with food. Last bottle. Have not bought this producer in many years.

Lovely to drink right now. Not a profound Barolo, but very well made, with less of a modernist profile than might be expected. After 30 years the oak is well integrated and what stands out is a terrific and more classic older Nebbiolo profile.

A great wine for cigar lovers. Overripe, overworked, over oaked. Just not my style of wine. Clear that others love this stuff. On my part, good thing I stopped buying.

Much improved over last, quite recent, experience. Modernist winemaking much in evidence, but done well, highlighting dense, sweet fruit. Well-structured, with ample, fine tannin. Barolo? Well, of a type perhaps. But a successful wine, to be sure.

Lovely mature Barolo from a vintage that is showing somewhat unevenly these days. Neck-level fill. Cork in good shape. Pale garnet with ample bricking. Lovely fruit, with structure enough to support it. Soft aromatics. Very nice.

Another beautiful wine from Scavino. The 04 is really singing. The sweetness of the fruit, the depth and weight of the fruit, are all fabulous. This is not a traditional Barolo by any stretch of the imagination. But I found it not too hard to put my biases against Scavino's winemaking style of this era aside and just enjoy the wine for what it was. Oak? Yes, present and accounted for. But still, an enormously pleasing wine. In a great place right now.

Wine is in a terrific place now. Interestingly, the extra time in wood gave the wine a profile that comes across as more traditional than some of Scavino's other Barolo from this period. Beautifully austere yet balanced at the same time, Structure out the wazoo with sweet fruit, lovely tertiary notes, and beautiful aromatics. Terrific at the moment.

A wonderful version of a modernist Cannubi. Mature, but will hold for a long while yet. Clear, sweet fruit, structure buttressed by oak that has integrated but is present. Lacks the classic tar/roses of more transitional Nebbiolo.

Massive still, densely structured but with balance and deep, clear fruit. To be sure, this is no wine for diehard traditionalists. I’m not sure I would know this was a 23-year old Barolo. The oak treatment is powerfully evident in how the wine is structured and tastes. But it is still an achievement worth applauding.

One of the best of Fevre's 02 GCs I have tasted. In 02, Fevre was plagued by some kind of problem that led his wines to oxodize prematurely. Virtually every bottle of Les Preuses I have tasted in the past decade has been undrinkable because of Premox. In other bottlings my experience has been more varied. But the Les Close, at least this bottle of Les Close, what finally showing what I expected from a Fevre GC Chablis.

Found a couple of bottles of this tucked into a corner of the cellar. Great to see Giacosa's magic holding with a 16-year old base Nebbiolo from a so-so vintage. Bought at estate on release. Less structured and layered than a Barolo, but really outperforming. Garnet with ample bricking. Wonderful nose of classic old Nebbiolo profile. Lovely mouthfeel with tobacco, tar, smoke, red berry fruit. Really nice.

Exceptional. Beautiful clarity, depth, dimension. Fabulous at 18 years. Retains vibrancy, with soft citrus notes, honey, white flower, hay, and mineral tones. Touch of sulfur on opening blows off quickly. Greath finish.
