November 27, 2021 - Decanted 2 hours (nb 65% Merlot 35% Cabernet Franc). Showing a little age on the rim but still deep ruby in the middle. Rich nose - aromatic - savoury ripe blackberry, light violet, rosemary with rich leather, savoury & woody notes. Palate is excellent - rich, ripe, lots of fresh acidity with great fine integrated tannins balancing out - lighter fruits than expected (needed longer decant) but clear raspberries and light rosewater. Certainly in its drinking window but with incredible persistence on palate it will have many years of development ahead. Excellent. Drink now-2040.
October 21, 2021 - Hugh disappointment
October 19, 2021 - Does it get much better? So plush and deep and seductive. At peak, no rush, was great out of the bottle, temperature is key 18c ish worked.
September 30, 2021 - Bottled sex. This is hedonism at its best. The wine is silky, refined, elegant, and pure. There is volume, depth and flowers, cherries, plums, herbs, licorice, and a touch of citrus in the aromatics that knocks you out. The seamless finish is all about its perfectly ripe, sweet, fruits drenched in velvet. Perhaps a bit more volume and this would easily score triple digits.
June 23, 2021 - Just a beautiful wine - very concentrated and harmonious dark fruit, cedar, damp earth, mocha and hint of game. Paired very nicely with grilled antelope chops.
June 9, 2021 - Decanted over cocktails, first of six bottles. Perfect seamless viscosity and integration with plenty of red fruit remaining, delicate floral notes, medium yet mouth-filling body, long smooth finish. This is the best right-bank Bordeaux I've had although I haven't had many, and I'm going with LPB's perfect score because I don't see how it could be better.
May 19, 2021 - A stunning Cheval that's probably just starting to evolve and will for a long time.
April 13, 2021 - Very well done wine , gave it maybe 1.5 hours of air. Next time will be hours of air. This is a step or 2 above , smoothness and distinctive flavor make this top notch.
April 9, 2021 - Classic Cheval nose of sweet earth and violets. Medium-bodied and beautifully balanced with excellent depth of blue and black fruits and good freshness. There is a density here and the wine is still coiled and young with just a bit of secondaries emerging on the finish. Layered and classic but clearly holding back still. I’m a believer in the ’98 Cheval long-term but it’s not there yet. 94+
January 3, 2021 - Huge nose of cedar, wild animals, leather, ripe green pepers... Super silky tannin, red ripe berries, animal, ripe green pepers.
