March 13, 2024 - 2006 Barolo (Trattoria One Fifth, NYC.): [Double-decanted for one hour around 10am.] Loads of black fruit in the nose. Sweet black fruit and plenty of tannin in the long finish. A bit better than the last time (2/28/2023). Maybe because it got more air.

March 1, 2023 - The 2006 resonates in the glass with a blend of tobacco, black cherries and spice. This is soft textured with textbook Roagna acidity and gripping minerality. It finishes medium in length with nuances of licorice and citrus that linger. More depth would be preferred, but just looking at this label is so much fun.

February 28, 2023 - NV Rogna (Marta, NYC): [Pop and pour. Served blind as a mystery wine.] Juicy red fruit nose. Tart cherry fruit. Soft. Doesn't have the rough tannins of most of the other wines tonight. Quite enjoyable.

It's been an amazing night of tasting, but this was simply so much fun.
Not the most amazing Barolo of the night, but it's certainly the most fun. La Pira vineyard? Maybe. The word is that Luca bottled this for a favorite Norwegian band with its own label. Tobacco, black cherries and spice. This is soft textured with textbook Roagna acidity and gripping minerality. It finishes medium in length with nuances of licorice and citrus that linger. More depth would be preferred, but just looking at this label is so much fun.

Glad you had a great night of tasting nevertheless. This is from the La Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto and it was cultivated and vinified by Luca, and I made the blend. I don’t know what he does now, but back then he made separate vinifications based primarily on the age of the vines. This is a blend of three different vinifications within the vineyard. He cultivated the vineyard organically and vinified by spontaneous fermentation with natural yeast, no fining,no filtration and the vinifications were aged separately of course, and after four years of aging, I made the blend and we bottled it. A fair portion of the blend came from the vinification that was destined to become “La Rocche e La Pira Riserva” as it was called back then. The label that you mentioned was drawn by the late Justin Bartlett who is widely considered as an icon within the niche of pointillism.

January 15, 2023 - Stealth cork at first. I noticed the missing fruit more than any off odour. Gradually, it became a case of straight out corked.

April 30, 2016 - Aired for two hours. Tar and roses. Some dark berries. Supple mouth feel with smoothed tannins. Good acidity. Elegance over power, love it. This is a traditionally crafted barolo blended from the La Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto.
