March 29, 2024 - Opened with a quick taste and then decanted for 2 hours. Initial thoughts upon opening were great color with little browning, Nose was pure fruit with a little bit of dust. Tannins stilll provide some backbone but are soft. 2 hours later this is a very nice soft wine with structure. Dark fruit. Really nice. This bottle would have had 10+ more years of life.

Very nice and a real treat.

March 12, 2023 - Very nice, green nose, red fruit, smells much younger than it is, coffee grinds, left bankesque. Palate is resolved, bright and pure fruit, long finish. Excellent bottle

November 6, 2022 - Vinetasters: Howell Mountain (Park Ridge, IL): Served double blind. Lots and lots of pyrazine on the nose here. Feels too lean, without a roundness and weight on the palate, leading me to think this is an off/very cold vintage where the grapes didn't reach proper ripeness. Very high acid is another piece of evidence in that direction. My 8th, group's 7th.

September 21, 2022 - Opened and decanted for probably 2 hours before serving. This wine was awesome and just kept getting better. If anything it drank very young and almost was a bit too big on first opening. Compelling fruit. Good balance.

May 5, 2021 - The '86 Howell Mountain is a beautiful Cabernet that is in great shape and remains full of life. The nose was heavy on graphite with some tobacco and dark red fruit rounding out the aromatics. On the palate, I found the wine to be intense and relatively full-bodied, with some tannin still remaining on the back end. I found the palate again dominated by graphite, with some dark fruit, tobacco, and a hint of bell pepper emerging. The wine almost seemed a tad closed off and lacked some complexity in its expression, but remained vibrant and powerful for a Cabernet of its age.
