July 17, 2018 - Not decanted, just carefully checked for temperature. Fully mature, ethereal and complex, with an aroma profile eerily similar to Accomasso's Rocche '08 a few weeks ago, such as camphor, leather and porcini, dried plums and cooked cherry/raspberry compote, sweet liquorice and scorched earth. On the palate more poised and elegant than before, with sweet cooked and dried fruit flavours, fine yet grippy tannins, and the alcohol initially way better integrated than a few years ago. Works really well in a food context - spaghettoni and ragú - but time and air reveals a slightly disturbing heat on the finish. On the other hand, the salty minerality gets more prominent too. All in all, showed even better than expected. So, a fortunate farewell.

April 11, 2015 - Cork crumbling. Not obviously corked, but obviuosly flawed.

September 14, 2013 - Lots of personality, as usual. The tannins are quite gritty and rustic, so it drinks best after a long airing (on the second day, that is).

March 31, 2013 - Looks older than its age - bricking and browning, with veils of deposit to decant away. The maturing nose has all the complexity and depth of an old traditional barolo, with notes such as leather, porcini, truffles, farine, menthol, balsamico, dried rose petals, dried plum, raspberry redux, liquorice and undergrowth. The palate is still full of energy, with sweet sun-ripe etna fruit and tannins that are grippy and rustic in a peculiar old-school way. Only problem is the finish, which looses the balance to alcohol (14,5%) especially after our lambshank is finished. Anyway, a truly special wine, "original" in the primary meaning of the word.

January 11, 2013 - The 06 Nonna Concetta has shed quite a lot of its darker colour by now. The nose has considerable charm with developing notes of dried roses, almonds, sweet red berries and balsamic hints. On the palate the tannins are surprisingly powerful, up-front and rustic - this wine needs food, at least to begin with - but the acidity is lower and less fresh than expected and the overall balance leans more towards the alcoholic and sweet-fruity than we remember. Also, the length could be better. To conclude: top marks for personality and authenticity but somewhat lacking in terms of balance. Drinks well now and over the next five, at least.
