December 1, 2017 - What a way to begin the month and end the year - a vertical of Rayas. This was tasted blind against its sibling, the Pignan. Not knowing which wine it was added to the fun. This was consistent with my note in July but with a slightly more complexity from the forest floor that hit you initially. After it disappeared, the red strawberry/kirsch notes emerged along with the perfect acidity to keep things fresh.

December 1, 2017 - Grenache with Panache (New York, NY): Tasted blind side by side with 1996 Rayas Pignan. The nose on this was beguiling - floral, spice and black tea leaves. On the palate, this was also a lovely, feminine styled wine - light red fruit with lots of earth, light smoke, and a savory finish - but in a very ethereal package - just dances across the tongue. This was my preferred wine of the two (although they were both great) but my guess was Pignan. I always have found the Pignan to be more feminine than the Reserve so that was what led my guess. Everyone else at the table called this as the Reserve.

December 1, 2017 - Grenache with Panache (Friends apt): Served blind next a Pignan of the same year. Question for the group was which do you like better and which do you think is the Rayas. This starts as the bright cherry and very light and delicate and just beautiful and then over time started to build more savory notes and even a touch of smokiness (the Pignan went the other direction - starting savory and building to fruit). I liked this one better from the beg, but was very unsure on which was which as the Pignan had a lot more body and substance where as this is just very light and tantalizing. Both very pretty wines though and an interesting competition given the ~$100-150 difference in price.

July 26, 2017 - A classic Rayas nose that everyone around the table presses their nose in the glass and takes a strong sniff. Kirsch, raspberry liqueur, and rose petals. The strawberry color lightens at the edges but doesn't appear brown. The palate feels light but very flavorful - sweet red fruit with some savory dried herbs de Provence.
