January 18, 2022 - Brick brown. A fair bit of solids. Nose is quite nice. Deep musty cherry skins and earth. Baked plums even. All is integrated well. Entry is lovely, sweet, rich liquorice and deep, deep fruit. Long finish with a bit of clean pepper. Nice tannins, very fine and coming late. This is a super bottle. Well integrated, with a rich but still elegant profile. I have not had that much 15+ year Barolo. I would not have guessed that is what it was frankly. One reviewer described it as port like. This rings true. It has the mouth taste of an aged port.

December 29, 2021 - Very ripe even slightly raisined nose with buckets of Barolo balsamic character and not so much of the roses.
On the palate a distinctly port-like quality. Thick, but with plenty of acidity to keep it fresh. The elements are all in balance.
This is clearly a hot-vintage wine and not the kind of thing I usually like in Barolo but it’s nonetheless delicious. I love port!

October 30, 2021 - double decanted and drank two hours later over the course of dinner. opens with a strong nose of tar and dried rose petals. distinctly tar, not balsamic or pine which was kind of interesting. on the palate, the wine is medium bodied and made with a somewhat rustic blend of several vineyards. you get dark cherry, tar, and a nice earthiness along with some red berries. the tannins are a bit grainy but well integrated. the finish is long and persistent. this bottle is one of the better mascarellos that i have had and is drinking beautifully right now but no doubt has many more years left. in time, the tar blows off and gives way to saddle leather, dark cherry, sous bois on the nose. the evolution of this traditional barolo over several hours was quite pleasing. everything a barolo should be!

October 26, 2021 - Decanted at 4pm and tasted over seven hours. This was MUCH better than my previous bottle, no signs of any brett or other potential flaws. Color was bright medium garnet and very youthful. Nose was very classic...tar, roses, cherry and rich, black earth. Great body and mouth feel. Somewhat meaty on the palate along with the cherry, some tannin but not much and a somewhat rustic overall impression. Long finish. Really delicious! and probably at its best from about 3-4 hours in the decanter.

September 19, 2021 - This wine is drinking beautifully and still has a long life ahead. One hour decant - the nose opened almost immediately and continue to grow over the evening. Is a wine you can savor with each sip. Paired with ribeye and roasted cherry tomatoes over angel hair pasta.

(Bartolo Mascarello Barolo, Barolo) Transparent brick red with pink highlights. In the nose, a touch of alcohol leads to aromas of fresh, bright redcurrant; wild strawberry; and sour cherry, with hints of dried flowers, worn leather, and asphalt. The pleasantly restrained palate offers dried cherry, cranberry, and even caramelized strawberry. Supple tannins emerge on the way to a pleasantly astringent, slightly bitter, and spicy finish. A graceful wine that is decidedly present yet understated and elegant. Postmodern Barolo: The War That Never Was
