February 1, 2023 - The nose wasn’t showing much but the wine is dark brooding and powerful wine. Impressive. I didn’t get a chance to go back to this one.
April 26, 2022 - En-Primeur campaign for the 2021 vintage; 4/25/2022-4/29/2022 (Bordeaux): From magnum
Rich, polished and lovely dark hued fruit with grip on the mid palate. Note: My first tasting was reasonably early, but this was overtaken by cork taint over the evening. Didn’t impact my rapid tasting but I am marking this flaw.
April 23, 2022 - 1982 (A vintage dream); 4/21/2022-4/23/2022 (Hotel Jean Jacques Rousseau, La Neuveville, lake Biel, Restaurant des Bains, Avenches, Switzerland): Next fully oxy bottle,
October 3, 2021 - In very good condition indeed. Fully mature but not past it. Understated sweet blackcurrant and plum fruit still present on the palate, against a background of cigar box and dead leaves. More extensive note not taken; it complemented duck confit perfectly.
July 12, 2020 - Very evolved nose, a little bit maderized, very gamey and leather... Very light and totally integrated tannin, gamey, leather, soy sauce, very nice!
January 14, 2020 - Quelle belle surprise. Nez cuir, poivron. En bouche, ample, rond sur une longue finale. Tiens tête à Pavis, Pape Clément, Gazin également des 82.
November 29, 2019 - From magnum. Still very fruit forward for it's age, good color, and well balanced. Drinking relatively young for an 82 and will likely benefit from a bit more time, at least for magnums and other large formats.
July 28, 2019 - Excellent bottle from a good cellar, provenence known. Deep scarlet red in colour with little bricking. Extraordinarily youthful in appearance. Nose of blackcurrant, black cherry, coffee, bitter chocolate and cedar. Same on the palate with a wonderful salty tang of oyster shell. So fresh! The best of a number of 1982 Left Bank wines enjoyed over the past year. Plenty left in the tank but really in the zone right now.
June 12, 2019 - 82 Bordeaux (Piccolino, Liverpool Street Stn, London): Coffee and black currant leaf nose. Soft and silky. Really very attractive. Dark red fruit. Silky and elegant. Punching well above it’s weight. Confirms this as the best Batailley vintage I can remember tasting. ****
