September 10, 2020 - This is insanely young and underdeveloped even after several hours of decanting. Good earthiness and some promise of the bright future. This needs good 3-5 years, if not more. Hold.

September 2, 2020 - Right out of the (half) bottle generous smell of strong curry, medium buffalo leather and tar as well as graphite, forest floor and cinnamon sticks. Some distant vanilla. All wrapped up in a heady, warm, slightly broody fruitcoat.

On the palate a king of balance with glimmers of sour cherries throughout. Fresh but well-controlled acidity sweeps in first, then bitterness launches at perfect intensity, finally the thick tannins start coating the mouth in slow motion, a fascinating biochemical experience. Amazing length and incredible post-taste vibrations. A perfectly conducted orchestra.

This would be wasted if paired with food - way too good on its own. Drinking perfectly.

August 28, 2020 - This is still young, so I gave it a good 3 hours decant. Explosive, but so classy and sophisticated, this shows beautiful perfume of red and black fruit, crème de cassis, dark earthy notes, some minerality of graphite, tobacco, smoke, there is also some truffle, underwood and some cedar. It‘s medium-full bodied, with excellent mid-palate persistence, masses of high tannin that is perfect quality though and pretty high acidity providing excellent freshness to the slightly creamy mouthfeel. Super long finish with really good complexity. All this needs is a few more years. I will try to keep my hands off of this for another 5+ years but a great wine in the making.

August 11, 2020 - Similar to previous notes but this was surprisingly much more open than before. Decanted, this was elegant, beautiful bright fruit, some pencil lead and creme de cassis. Beautiful. 97+pts.

June 29, 2020 - Bordeaux 2010 - 10 Years - 61 Reds: Bordeaux 2010 after 10 years. 61 reds, mostly big names, tasted blind. Average score 92.1 and lower than the more open and charming 2009 vintage last year (93.4). A few observations: A) It’s not yet the harmonious, complex, classic, clean vintage. Especially the masculine appellations of the left bank need at least 5 more years to just open up, potentially longer to soften. B) Left bank trumps right bank thanks to less detectable alcohol, cleaner lines and the two best wines of the vintage (Mouton, Margaux). C) Pomerol shines bright with many strong wines which can all mask the high alcohol levels (best AOC slightly ahead of Pauillac). D) As in 2009, there are several right banks already past peak, incl. big names (Duffau Lagarosse, Ausone). All in all, 2010 is a very good vintage with pockets of greatness but today 2009 shows more open and hence complex. TN: I’ve had this wine before in another blind tasting and it was no fun to drink and only slowly opened up after several hours in the decanter. This bottle showed similar. Muted nose with a tad of sweet fruit and some baking spices. Not very balanced on the palate with still some edgy tannins and a tad too high acidity. Shows a bit of red fruit, minerality but not much more. Precision seems good. This might need another 10 years to open up.

Decanting: At least 10 hours at this point.

    Group average: 90.6
Group rank: number 49 out of 61 wines

(Château Haut-Bailly) Dark ruby color; focused, tart currant, pencil lead, cedar nose; tasty, tart currant, pencil lead, cedar palate; approachable now but could use 2-plus years; medium-plus finish (64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc)

(Chateau Haut-Bailly (Pessac-Léognan)) Cabernet Sauvignon 62%, Merlot 36%, Cabernet Franc 2%. Yield 37 hl/ha. The alcohol here is 13.9%. A fine, glossy but not overly dense hue. The nose has a lovely expression, absolutely brimming with tightly packed and defined fruit, with a dark and savoury twist. A supple start to the palate, before relaxing into a very primary character through the middle, with rather juicy-crunchy black fruits countered by a gentle but appropriate texture. Lots of tannin here, with a dark and grainy character. And good acidity too. Rather restrained despite the huge backbone, and with a very charcoaly, toasty length of tannin at the end. Good quality here.
