January 20, 2024 - Lucky with another superb bottle at Ficofi’s annual event. In term of aromatics and complexity a surprisingly large step up from the DRC Richebourg of the same vintage.

January 13, 2024 - Bottle 2 more like it. Aromatically lifted, floral less green. More fruit, sweetness and charm. Both ex-domaine. (6199/6917)

January 13, 2024 - Bottle 1 well below expectations. Overt green stems. Lacked subtlety and flair expected. Shocking bottle variation this era. (5994/6917)

October 3, 2023 - In the hushed parlors of upper society, where the clinking of crystal glasses harmonizes with the melodies of sophisticated conversations, there exists a tale of love, music, adventure, and wine. It is a tale woven around the 1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti, a vintage that transcends the boundaries of time and space, encapsulating the essence of passion and elegance.

Due to an internet favor for a rich aristocrat, I was given this bottle a year ago where it has been gently sleeping in my wine cellar waiting for a Saturday, when there was a harvest full moon for reasons I shall share for my fellow winos.

In the heart of the Burgundy region, where the air is imbued with the scent of ripe grapes and ancient romance, I found myself entwined in a love affair as intense and intoxicating as the finest wine. This affair blossomed under the watchful gaze of the French moon, in the very vineyard that birthed the elixir that now rests in my glass, whispering secrets of the past.

It was a Monday when I first met her, the French maiden whose uncle owned the illustrious winery. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow upon the sprawling vineyards, we embarked on a journey that would forever be etched in the tapestry of my memories. Together that Monday we picked Pinot Noir grapes, our fingers stained with the essence of the earth, and our laughter mingled with the rustle of leaves.

In those stolen moments close to the ground, amidst the serenity of the vineyard, we found solace in each other’s arms. The rain, a symphony of nature’s tears, fell softly upon the earth, mirroring the passion that enveloped us. It was in those stolen kisses, amidst the vines heavy with the promise of future wine, that our love story began to unfold.

And then came Saturday, a night pregnant with the glow of a full harvest moon. The vineyard, bathed in the silvery luminescence, became our sanctuary. Beneath the celestial canopy, amidst the rows of ancient vines, we surrendered ourselves to the allure of desire. The raindrops caressed our skin, a tender prelude to the storm of emotions that consumed us. In the embrace of the vineyard, we made love, our bodies entwined in a dance as old as time itself.

It was in that moment of sublime passion that I understood the true meaning of the 1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti. The wine, much like our love, was a blend of complexity and simplicity, a fusion of boldness and subtlety worth every damn penny. As the velvety liquid graced my lips, I was transported back to that Saturday night, to the intoxicating sweetness of her breath, and the taste of rain on her skin.

In the glass, the wine revealed itself like a sonnet composed by a master poet. The color, a deep, garnet hue, shimmered like the embers of a dying fire. With each swirl, the aroma enveloped me in a bouquet of ripe cherries, earthy truffles, and the whisper of ancient oak barrels. The first sip was a revelation, a crescendo of flavors that danced on my palate – blackberries, roses, and a hint of vanilla, woven together with the finesse of a maestro’s composition. And the leg’s, and the finish, were long and lovely such in fact that I never mixed it with my usual pizza, or bone in, or lamb. I drank the damn thing alone in front of the masterpiece “Peeckelhaering” which I felt is my current feeling on where I am in this life.

As a lover of the finer things in life, I have traversed the realms of pleasure, seeking experiences that tantalize the senses and awaken the soul. Yet, in that glass of 1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti, I found the culmination of all my desires. It was not just a wine; it was an odyssey through time, a celebration of love and adventure, encapsulated in every drop.

As I raise the glass to my lips, I am transported back to that vineyard, to the rain-soaked earth and the intoxicating aroma of ripe grapes. I am reminded of her laughter, of the way her eyes sparkled like the stars that adorned the night sky. The wine is not just a libation; it is a vessel that carries me back to the arms of my beloved, to the moments that defined our love.

In the 1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti, I have found more than a wine; I have found a soulmate and as the last notes of my guitar fade into the night, and the wine leaves a lingering warmth in my chest, I am filled with gratitude. Gratitude for the French maiden who stole my heart, for the uncle who nurtured the grapes that led to this divine elixir, and for the serendipity that brought us together in that fateful vineyard.

The 1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti is not just a wine; it is a love story, an adventure, and a reminder that life’s most precious moments are meant to be savored, just like the finest wine.

Note to self: 3 hour decant, then finesse glass by glass

February 18, 2023 - Well into secondary aromatics and quite fine, but nothing like the fireworks you'd expect and a character that's generally quite "soft". Before anyone asks, ex-domaine. (5988/6917)

(Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti) Beautiful violet and lavender nose; gorgeous lavender, strawberry, rhubarb and blackberry fruit, good acid, structured, rich, seamless and beautiful (Rudy served this blind. Several guessed it was a '99, and DRC, but no one picked it as Romanée-Conti.)
