December 18, 2021 - "The Last Supper" in Princeton (Chez Walker - Princeton, NJ): Last of the magnums I brought home from the property. Last tasing 2016...Decanted, drank some with the Last Supper crew, saved half for the next night.

Inky color persists, some signs of separation. Nose consistent with last tasting: dark fruits, licorice, smoke. Dense dark berries on the palate, savory notes, grilled meats. Medium/full body, long finish.

By Day 2 it had lightened up a bit, more savory and mild cherry. Still very good.

Wine is in a good spot now, should go for a while but not likely to improve from here. I would drink over the next few years...

July 5, 2019 - Really expressive nose of tar, black fruit, gunpowder, herbal black tea, green peppercorn, and charred meat -- there's a lot going on here and it continued to reveal new layers as the night went on. The palate is a little more red-fruited, with nice structure, medium+ acid and well-integrated medium+ tannins.

This wine is really good, but the wine feels more exciting on the nose than the palate. Definitely in a modern style, but very very good, and a wine that I think could be quite versatile across different foods and palates.

April 30, 2016 - Go Big or Go Home...Birthday Bash with Mags and 3L bottles (Chez Walker - Princeton, NJ): From a magnum that I had "sherpa'd" back from Briones Spain a few years ago...Decided it was time to open this along with several other mags and 3L for a birthday bash...decanted for about 2.5 hours, before serving

Really enjoyed this when I had it at the winery. The wines are made by a father/son team each making a version of Rioja. This is the "modern" version made by the son.

Dark, inky color. Nose jumps out of the decanter...Dark fruits, licorice, "shoe polish" (not bad though...). Palate was dense dark berries, earth and anise. Some savory notes on mid palate.

This is a rich and extracted wine, not for everyone. Some might say its too Modern (in the Parker sense). Our crowd liked it, a natural progression up from some lighter wines so it worked. Would pair well with grilled meats...very nice, brought back a good memory of my visit to the winery in Summer 2014...as/of my visit then this was not imported to the US. I paid around 70 Euro for the magnum...

(Miguel Merino Rioja Unnum) Very dark ruby color; torrefaction, mocha, espresso beans, black licorice nose; torrefaction, ripe berry, black fruit palate, reminiscent of a Parkerized Right Bank Bordeaux; long finish
