January 18, 2023 - Two Great Red Burgundy (Yan's China Bistro, Walnut Creek, Ca.): Nose of allspice, black cherry, red cherry, dusty earth, saddle leather, hint of barnyard, and game, same on the palate, big body, at peak, very tasty, mouth filling fruit, nose and taste were terrific from the start but slowly waned away during the two hour lunch, it is 24 years old after all, slightly rustic, medium/long finish and lovely aftertaste, all there but less than the Emmanuel Rouget which is to be expected.

February 17, 2018 - Perhaps less finesse than top Engel. Floral, cola and sweet aromas with relatively deep palate.

July 5, 2016 - Ten Days in Burgundy, Champagne, and Paris; 6/24/2016-7/6/2016: Highly floral and quite green on the nose. Beautifully expressive. Palate has solid development while retaining big tannins and plenty of red berry fruit power. Would love to find more of these. This was quite special, despite the sparse notes.

January 10, 2015 - All enjoyed a beautiful GC Burg just starting to hitting its straps. Developing lovely 2ndry characteristics. Great balance of fruit, tannins and acid.

January 28, 2014 - Light garnet bright color. Nose offers up small red fruits, undergrowth, spice and barnyard/Brett which to my nose does not retract but adds a little extra complexity and enjoyment. On palate good fruit with slightly austere tannins but lively mineral acidity to match. Complex long finish.

October 26, 2013 - 99's do, have had and will continue to have such a great perfume without any confected sweetness and this bottle is a great example of this. It has a touch of earthy development and bright red fruits with a hint of spice. It is quite a strong wine with a touch of camphor and some musky funk. It is structured for the long haul yet offers good pleasure now.

December 29, 2012 - Year-end "James Bond" Party (Chad's, Chuville): Pretty good, but even decanted for 3-hours, this was still some years away from being ready. I picked it out as a 1999 Echezeaux, but thought it may have been from Grivot instead, given how rich and structured it was. The palate was nicely complex, and clearly from the Southern reaches of the Cote de Nuits, with its dark-fruited black cherry notes wed to tons of toasty, smoky wood spice - cumin, cloves, sandlewood, peppercorns - with a good bit of earth and meat running underneath. An attractive bouquet, if just a bit on the toasty side. The palate was intensely structure, with firm, fine tannins and bright, juicy acidity forming a serious spine upon which rich black-fruited notes and savoury nuances of roasted meat, earth and more paprika spice rode into a long finish. The backpalate echoed the slightly toasty, woody note on the nose, but this was more an accent to the wine rather than an overwhelming distraction. Overall, I liked this, but it was clearly not quite ready yet. Give it another 5 years and it should be very nice.
