August 30, 2020 - Corked! Second bottle from this producer from 1990s that was corked. Bummed.

June 12, 2020 - My only 1991. Bottle stood up for 8 months and double decanted. Usual dark red color. Good aromatics of rose and tar. Palate has rose, tar and cherry. Also has tarter red fruit and is decidedly tannic in comparison to the 1990 or 1994. Excellent.

June 22, 2019 - A Piedmont Night (Michael's M's home): Slow ox'ed for 6h, decanted for 1h off sediment then back into bottle for dinner 3h later. Green and brown pine needles on the nose with tart dried cherries, earth/tar. Palate had beautiful red cherries, earth accented by tar, hints of dark caramel and slight oxidation. Prominent tannins on the back end and a long finish. Excellent depth. Definitely can go longer but drinking well now.

May 12, 2019 - 1991 was a lousy year for most regions in Italy, if not all of Europe. Still, there are plenty of examples of great wine from that vintage. Rousseau Chambertin is supposed to be even better in 91 than in 1990 (I own but can not afford to drink the 90). 1991 Gaja Barbaresco was my first great wine from the Langhe. This wine is more mature than the 90 or 2001 Vigna Christina, but it is in an ideal state right now. The tannins are fully integrated, and it has all the tar, roses and other Nebbiolo hallmarks. Everything blends together harmoniously, even if it doesn’t exhibit the power of better vintages. Not in any danger of an immediate decline, but it’s also not going to improve with additional age.

Side note, this threw the slickest, weirdest deposit I’ve ever seen. It looked like reconstituted chili peppers or a long dead eel.
