Community Tasting Notes 5

September 4, 2015 - Alerted by a conversation about the apparent decline in the '09 Willamette Valley PN from WR, I was curious to see how others in our collection are doing. The Yamhill-Carlton is a step up from the Willamette Valley (part of the Appellation series I presume). Well happy to report things are going well. Clear ruby red; the usual bright intense perfumed floral aromas bursting forth; very nicely balanced on the palate, medium-low acid, lots of strawberry/red cherry, some smoke and leathery bits, moderate finish, little bit of tannin but not obtrusive. So how much longer? Maybe a couple of years; no rush at this point, but not much to gain I suspect.

June 22, 2013 - Some cherry fruit. A little thin and astringent but got much better with some air.

May 26, 2011 - Nice to sample some '09s on our visit. Bright clarity, ebullient strawberry notes, clean, balanced, tends to fade a bit on the palate; likable if not memorable. Gaining impression that '09s are going to be more for near term consumption than for keeping.

May 9, 2011 - "jegork" nails this one. Red berries with a hint of earth and forest floor on the nose. On the palate, medium-bodied and forward, making it quite approachable now. Not particularly "tense", this does not seem to have the underlying structure for significant aging. Very nice, and off the top off my head, I like this better than the '08s I've tried from White Rose.

April 19, 2011 - This wine shows a nice array of aromas on the nose. It starts with red cherry, red raspberry, strawberry, rose petals, underbrush, damp earth and chocolate and then after some swirls some intense notes of mushroom, truffles and brown sugar show as a secondary layer. The palate offers a a moderately intense structure with smooth tannins and flavors of bitter cherries and strawberries with a balanced acidity. I decanted this wine for 4 hours and it really opened up nice making it very enjoyable. This wine was bottled last February and should last for 4 years.
