February 27, 2017 - A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%) and Aglianico (10%). Fermented and macerated for three weeks in stainless steel. Aged for 12 months in new French barriques. Alcohol 12,8%, acidity 4,9 g/l, pH 3,6. Total production 6500 bottles.

Surprisingly youthful, luminous dark cherry with pretty little developed bricking to be seen. Pale raspberry red rim. The savory nose feels more developed than how the wine looks like with mature and somewhat restrained aromas of wizened dark berries, moist sous-bois, some fresh blackcurrant, a little bit of licorice, a hint of smoke and tarry character, a hint of coffee and a touch of aged dusty character. The wine feels ripe, supple and juicy on the palate with quite full body yet surprisingly fresh and crunchy flavors of dark plums, developed yet still somewhat fresh blackcurrant and blackberry-driven fruit notes, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of tart cranberry, a hint of mocha oak and a touch of licorice. The mouthfeel is silky and the wine feels pretty balanced with moderately high acidity and quite ample yet very ripe and almost fully resolved tannins. The finish is bittersweet with long flavors of ripe blackberries, fresh and crunchy blackcurrants, some sour plums, a little bit of astringent chokeberries and a touch of bitter wood.

A very sophisticated, nicely evolved and smooth vintage of Montevetrano. Although a very fine and complex wine, this particular vintage lacks a bit of the depth and oomph of the best Montevetrano vintages, making it pale in comparison to them in a vertical of Montevetranos from 2004 to 1994. Nevertheless, a really stylish and beautiful Bordeaux blend that is drinking perfectly right now. Will probably keep for some years more, but most likely won't develop much from here. Recommended.

February 8, 2017 - At first a bit hard but turns attractive in the glass, black currant sour cherry plums.

December 24, 2015 - 2015 Xmas family dinner (served together with a 1996 vintage bottle): decanted for 30 min.; deep red-brown color; stunning bouquet: bilberry, blackberry, cherry, cassis, roasted bread, coffee and chocolate; full but not exaggerated body and texture; a certain sweetness; chocolate cream; long, smooth finish.

A good sip was left in the bottle. After 24 h: most of the impressions described before were still there but in a somewhat faded state.

Extraordinary wine. Perfect mixture of Bordeaux and Italy.

For further information see my tasting note of the 1996 vintage.

The 1995 was still named as "vino de tavola". The 1996 was the 1st vintage as Colli di Salerno IGT.
