April 4, 2020 - In direct sunshine ruby with purple tint and, if any, only a hint of lightening to orange on one or two mm of the edge. But I'm not quite sure about that. Nose is intense from the start without decant. Blackberry jam, red currants, camphor, licorice. On the palate intense, long, quite silky, but with high refreshing acidity and adding nuances as forest floor with some airtime in the glass and in bottle. The 1986 grange is on the power side, but it shows considerable complexity as well. So this is clearly extraordinary imho. 5/14/19/10. Just achieving adulthood and decades ahead. -2040+

December 28, 2019 - Best in a lineup of 6 vintages, not surprising given this was the oldest vintage. It's elegant and complete, a graceful beauty. This is lovely now and likely to remain so for some years.

December 10, 2019 - Zurich Supper Club - Christmas Dinner in London w/CVA and Andrew (67 Pall Mall - London, UK): Our Grange connoisseur, Andrew, brought this as a contribution for the evening... a great opportunity to taste a well preserved bottle

Consistent with notes from Jan 19 tasting:"Dark garnet color, no separation. Nose of dark fruits, leather (classic Grange), picking up menthol/eucalyptus behind the fruit. Palate showing dark cherry covered in chocolate - getting both flavors at the same time...savory (Bacon fat), tar(?) Medium/full bodied, long finish...."

Held some back, tasting later in the evening. After sitting in the glass (open about 90 minutes) show caramel/creme brûlée on the nose with the red fruits underneath. Really striking, fruit continued to evolve in the glass during course of the evening. Spectacular wine with many years ahead of it

December 6, 2019 - Zachy's BYO 2019: Pure blackberry jam, amazing array of a fruit-driven profile with everything in place, flaring with touches of earthiness. Very nice. 95

    1986 Penfolds Grange - 87% Shiraz / 13% Cab
This is the ‘71 on Steroids. Amped up intensity of savory and sweet flavors and aromas. While big and powerful it is still nuanced and elegant - ‘86 Margaux comes to mind. Buy at least 6 bottles of this and thank me over the years to come. I suspect this will top the ‘71. 96+
