November 20, 2023 - Decanted and drank over 6 hours. Best 3-5 hours in.

Brownish-red in the glass. Savory nose - mushroom / meaty. Complex on the palate - dried fruits and tertiary hints of tobacco and coffee; some tinny/metallic notes initially, but disappeared later on. Well balanced acidity. Tannins are silky at first but linger into the finish a bit longer than I'd prefer.

September 7, 2019 - PnP and it is already wonderful. Menthol from 9 years ago became orange peel, vibrant and not at all old with lingering fruity aftertaste. Acidity kept the structure. Really good now. After 2-3 hour decant I can tell if this is at peak. Feels like a plateau - and a very good one. Lots of sediment filtered out...

After 3 hrs decant this reminds me very much of my 2001 Musar. Stylistically they are twins for my taste. For half the price. Great to have 6-7 more bottles. Will last 4-5 years and no real need to decant.

    May 19, 2017 - Note: I use a scale on which 85 represents a very good wine.

Picked this out of the cellar sort of randomly -- was looking for an Italian, couldn't find the ones I wanted. So be it. Turned out to be a great little bottle. Sharp without being too acidic with just enough fruit to balance the other drier flavors. My guess is that my previous TN (7 years ago) was a bit generous, but that was then and this is now. Can't see much improvement in the future, although there is no reason to panic. Did not decant, wine seemed to open a bit through the bottle, although not a lot.

December 25, 2012 - Red cherry, licorice, tar and ripe rich fruit. This is an honest wine, traditional in style, a bit rustic with good earthiness, and firm tannins. Still has time to improve over the next 5 years.

February 27, 2012 - Mildly leaking cork, but a winner in the bottle. Dark purple with early bricking. Cherry, licorice, tar. Crisply acidic and ample fine tannins. Plenty of time left on this one. Wish it weren't my last bottle.

(VIGNAIOLI Marcarini) Barbaresco DEAL Dear Friends, I had this wine on Friday night and it is so seductive and complex - it is drinking really well right now. Everyone at the table was in agreement that it was the top wine of the night (we also had a horizontal of Sottimano's 1999's and Giacosa's regular 1999 Santo Stefano bottling - in other words, the Vignaioli showed brilliantly). I set out to find a stash for all of you this morning, but I didn't expect to find one of the best deals I've seen on cellar-aged Barbaresco in a while. Maybe it's because we bought so many of the 1996 magnums last week but, with the state of the Euro, it's an absolute steal in the market. This is the top cru from the winery and by far the hardest to find - it is probably the best wine they've ever made from this site (for some reason, this bottling is always miles better than the Castellizzano and Nervo but its relative scarcity makes it hard for us to find in any significant quantity). With more impact and extract than normal (from the 2000 vintage), this wine was initially ignored in the US on release due to the Wine Advocate review from 2003 (an 88pt rating - if you actually read the verbiage instead of just looking at the score it sounds pretty darn good to me). The key to Thomases' review was the open-ended "could well adjust itself with time" but most consumers only look at the original score and do not care to revisit an 88pt wine - that is a big mistake with the Vignaioli. When the Wine Spectator tasted it (after only a few more months in bottle), they gave it one of the highest ratings of the vintage and a Top 100 designation, which caused to disappear from the market. At this point, five years later, this has to represent one of the greatest buys in single vineyard Barbaresco from the vintage (a wine like this ?). To say it has turned out well is an understatement. Despite the original use of 20% new wood, the end-result has aged into something that most of you will find to be captivating and supremely delicious. Due to limited quantities, that's all I will say: This parcel is close to half price - it is directly from the winery cellar and has been stored under perfect conditions. This is all they have at the winery - we can't get another shipment. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as a top price/value choice in a category that has become increasingly out of reach for many consumers: 2000 Cantina Vignaioli Barbaresco "Marcarini" (Elvio Pertinace)(WS93/Top100) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy9008
