May 29, 2022 - So at a BBQ I opened this bottle as well as a 2012 Saxum (can't go wrong with a Saxum at a BBQ) Some of my guests I knew would prefer a Cabernet so i opened this bottle as well. Dark fruit on the nose. The palate is blackberry, plum, a touch of wood and for lack of a better description, balsamic glaze which led to a moderately long finish. It was the first time I had tried a bottle of Don Melchor and I was impressed. I think it has a long life ahead of it.

April 24, 2022 - Served 9 wines for Easter dinner party. Couldn’t have been happier because each wine paired fantastically from appetizer to dessert while pleasing the entire crowd of wine snobs. I have left my rating for each wine below and how it was paired. I also recommend all wines on this list.

Appetizer: Blackened shrimp & salmon spread
NV Champs de Rosé Brut Rosé (90pts)
2021 Blanchard & Lurton Les Fous Sauvignon Blanc (89pts)

Main: Dry rubbed smoked lamb and oven roasted Greek style lamb with asparagus au gratin & roasted potatoes.
    2008 Don Melchor (94pts)
2009 Luca Beso de Dante (92pts)
    2009 Norton Privada (92pts)
2013 Bodegas Caro (Barons de Rothschild) Amancaya (92pts)
    2009 Emiliana Coyam (91pts)

    Dessert: Black bottom pecan pie
NV Moutard Père et Fils Champagne Rosé (92pts)
NV Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) Champagne Brut (89pts)

The Don Melchor was by far the most opulent and the star of the night. It paired with lamb significantly better than I expected. The color is deep and rich with a nose of herbs, spices and tobacco. Early in the bottle the flavors were mostly dried fruits with secondary of what was found on the nose. It’s difficult to articulate how a wine can be big but not overwhelming bold. I love it and can see why its reputation continues to get stronger.

February 24, 2022 - Blind tasting at wine night with Prime Rib served. Below are the contestants, the list is how they finished, highest to lowest, for me personally and although all wines were very, very good some were just simply better than others but all paired extremely well with the meal.

2007 Joseph Phelps Insignia – Typical Insignia, spectacular.

2004 Colonial Estate Exile – As always, simply excellent.

2008 Don Melchor – This blind tasting showed it can hold its own with the big boys.

2010 Auma – My first experience with this Carménère blend and it was awesome!

2007 Dunn Howell Mountain Cab – First time with the Howell Mountain and was somewhat disappointed. I was really expecting more BOOM from this but it just didn’t knock my socks off.

2017 Cade Howell Mountain Cab – Again, not sure why but the Howell Mountains just didn’t perform as well as they have previously.

1997 BV Tapestry – Although it was a magnum and should’ve aged slower than a typical bottle I believe this was slightly past its prime. Still extremely good, just not one of the best sips of the night.

2005 Colonial Estate Explorateur – I truly enjoyed this wine, it was just sweeter in flavor and just a large drop off from the other Colonial Estate enjoyed this night.

Of the 8 attendees all had the Don Melchor in their top 3 or 4.

December 30, 2021 - Deep cherry red. Classy and complex CabSauv, with rich notes of black currant and spices and some wonderful hints of balsamic herbes, basically mint. Notes of chocolate and tobacco Round tannins that evolve in freshness with a persistent finish. Best alone in a proper baloon.
