August 21, 2021 - Top Savennieres, in its prime, well-cellared will go years. Dry honey, light beeswax, flint, dried white fruits, wonderful, serious nose. Blind- I would have guessed a top grand cru Chablis. Palate is rich, laser pure, long and delish. Focussed yet deep mineral fruit, succulent and very elegant. What more? Proof, to me, that a) Baumard is a great wine-maker, b) Savennieres is one of the true Grand Crus of French and all other white wines - at its best Savennieres produces the greatest white wines of the Loire and most other place as well- though the good ones need 6 to 15 years in a well-cellared bottle to show their stuff c) Chenin Blanc is, in the right hands and terroir (Savennieres, some Vouvrays and Saumurs), one of the world’s 4 great white wine grapes, along with Chardonnay Reisling and Semillon (a great aged dry Graves or Pessac is one of the wonders of wine). Each of these 4 grapes is capable of producing long-lived, complex, deeply alluring white wines. For its quality, Baumard’s Clos Papillon is a steal. I’d happily drink it (at one fifth the price) in place of many top white burgs, chablis, graves, top reislings. But most importantly… it’s yum.

July 13, 2020 - Wonderful wine. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Nuanced and still quite vibrant. Paired exceptionally (again) with pan cooked white fish. Love the butterscotch finish - faint but compelling.

June 19, 2020 - Hazy notes from last night. A lovely wine just starting to enter a secondary phase, with all the parts starting to integrate and with a great balance of acid and fruit. Some savennieres can be a bit ponderous, but this was light on its feet but yet powerful. Some butterscotch is starting to appear on the medium-bodied palate, and there is a minerality as well. Drinking well now but will definitely last many years (A-).

March 5, 2019 - Had this after an oxidized 2003 Chamboureau Savennieres. This was much more like it, with all the funky, oily textures chenin and Savennieres in particular on show. Medium bodied, nicely textured wine that still hasn't hit its plateau (A-).

    October 30, 2018 - Light straw yellow
    Non aromatic
Dry, barely oxidized apple pear flavors. This is very well balanced and absolutely lovely right now.

Aging well. No rush at all
