January 21, 2024 - What better way to combat the cold in New York than to open a Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet at the Mark Hotel. Etienne Sauzet is one of my favourite producers in the Côte de Beaune and this bottle was a shining example of the sheer elegance his wines possess. The bouquet on the nose did a stunning job of medleying florality with a host of citrus notes and melon. The palate, though, opened up incredibly. Getting better by the glass over two hours, candied lemon, apricot and peach dominated the upfront before light notes of hazelnut and butter created balance. The backend brought in some salinity that further rounded out the wine, incorporating stone fruit and iron into a signature oily Bâtard-Montrachet finish. This was a classic Bâtard-Montrachet profile that was incredibly well integrated, boasting just the right amount of acidity to ensure the wine wasn't overpowering. A gem from a producer that rarely misses the mark.

October 31, 2021 - Thank goodness this was clean. Big and powerful, more weight than the ’11 Niellon Chevalier alongside but not as precise and cut with less acid. Half preferred this half preferred the Chevalier.

March 31, 2018 - Decanted for an hour then drank over the next two. Light yellow straw colour. Nose is initially white shoe cream and new suede then warm canteloupe melon and sun-warmed lemon skins with several other subtle elements and salted butter emerging with more time in the glass. Palate opens with a beautifully jewelled but buttery mouthfeel then...gosh, a fugue of bruised, warmed, roasted, burned and confit lemons followed by very subtle barley sugur and fresh hazelnuts....so subtle and warmingly head-expanding even on the mid-palate. Understated but perfectly round-pebbled and complete. Massive freshness and really sophisticated with a gorgeous integration of all the sensory components. Superb and with a long life ahead of it.

March 17, 2018 - A really superb bottle this evening on the more elegant and delicate side of Batard. Started off a bit shy with some cool green fruit notes, flowers a hint of talcum and a surprising amount of sea air salinity combined with buttery brioche notes. Originally a bit on the cold side but got better at slightly warmer temps than I would usually serve this. A good acid backbone keeps it light on it's feet but never gets overpowering so it comes across as very well balanced yet lively and focused. With about 45 minutes of air I envisioned scents of a green apple orchard on a fall day. A little more dept with a nice touch of umami on the finish. At a great place along the evolution curve. This one really hit a sweet spot on the finesse scale, I don't see this fading anytime soon.

October 13, 2017 - White Truffle Dinner at Octavium (Octavium, 8/F, 22 Des Veoux Road, Central, Hong Kong): Decanted for an hour. Light almost silver gold colour. Nose is light lifted melted butter with lots of oyster jus. Massive immediate ‘in your head’ reverberance and length even on the nose. Palate is beautiful rich, toasted, loads salinity and minerality. Buttery but very light on its toes. New white shoe leather and white shoe cream. Very subtle oak. Incredibly subtle and nuanced for a BM....a sign of its youth. Light clover honey comes out with more time in the glass. Lots of lemon different fugues. So sophisticated and feminine. Really understated for a BM but all the better for it. This has 10+ years of further development ahead of it. 93+ for now.
