Community Tasting Notes 5

May 17, 2019 - A bit of dill pickle and fennel on the nose when first opened. Tar and meat. Lean black cherry. Definitely a riper vintage but carries it very well. Fresh enough to last longer but wouldn’t wait more than a couple years. Quite good. Very light tannins left.

March 23, 2019 - Sweet cherry syrup dominates the flavors here. Licorice. I am not familiar with Vigna Rionda but you can certainly taste the vintage as this is ripe. Very enjoyable but not sure it will age a lot longer. Tannins still firm. Easy to drink now. I can see what some people mean by “rustic” but I don’t consider this a pejorative.

June 26, 2016 - Unmistakably Vinga Rionda. The signature of the vineyard never ceases to amaze. 2007 was a little hot, but there is a lot of elegance in the terroir, which was just a touch overwhelmed by the potency of the fruit. A fantastic bottle.

May 31, 2014 - BYO (Casa FV): Pretty complex nebbiolo nose with a warm-vintage personality and first signs of development. Notes of cherry candy, liqueur cherries and polished wooden furniture. Medium acidity, generous fruit and ripe tannins that are soft enough. The impression is less animal than the vintages Canale made in co-operation with Luca Roagna, such as '06. This is highly enjoyable to drink now, and a piece of wine history in the making (since Canale's parcel in Vigna Rionda is now being replanted), but the future prospects for this version seem a bit unsure. Finally '07 isn't one of our favorite vintages in Piedmont.
