July 15, 2020 - Napa Tasting (Bistro Cocotte, Haberfield): Move obviously Napa for me, ripe but perfumed black fruits, plums, sweet spices, cedar, a little toasted note and a touch of bacon fat. And so it proves on the palate; jammy, slightly plummy fruit, an odd ripe menthol top note, soft, near resolved tannins, alcohol warmth is a little more intrusive here. With time though the fruit settles revealing blackcurrant and a touch more cedar on the nose...the the palate is still much of an alcoholic muchness. Hmm.
December 16, 2019 - 1994 California Cabernet Blind Tasting (Michelangelo Hotel, New York): Fungi medicinal nose. Some red fruit and bell pepper. Overly tannic and a very bitter finish. Likely bottle variation. Score withheld.
October 20, 2017 - 2017 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/16/2017-10/25/2017 (New York City, NY): Sampled from magnum, this deep garnet wine (98.4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1.4% Merlot and 0.2% Petit Verdot) flaunts gorgeous aromas of red cherries, plums, leather, hazelnuts, cocoa and cigar box. Full-bodied, medium in acidity, seamlessly alcoholic and with silky residual tannins, it has impressive mid-palate density and finishes very long. This 23-year-old wine is a good example of what Napa Cabernet is capable of when properly crafted and properly cellared. This should show well for many more years. Drink now-2030.
March 24, 2015 - A Weeknight at JulieD's (San Diego): Allowed to breathe in bottle for 1 hour, then in glass 30 minutes before tasting. Clear dark garnet - blood red, becoming darker after an hour. Brooding, elegant bouquet of creme de cassis, forest floor, blackberry liqueur. Racer117 noted "cinnamon stick." If tasted blind, I might have guessed tight young Bordeaux. Not sure if the fruit will outlast the tannins in this wine. My #3 tonight.
March 24, 2015 - Soft yet still full. Plenty of funk along with red berry, cinnamon stick, cedar, and a lingering finish. Very elegant. I would not expect this to improve with anymore age.
March 9, 2015 - To P Rolla
October 8, 2014 - Dinner at 801 Chophouse. Kansas City. Decanted 15 minutes and a bottle brought with me from San Jose. Hints of dark fruit on the nose along w some cedar notes. Upon taste it was very smooth and elegant. Mild Fruit up front with secondary flavored mirroring earth tones. Cedar and tobacco. Had it not been for the 94 Joseph Phelps Insignia I had last week to serve as a bench mark, I would have rated it a 95. But I will stick firm at 93 which is very respectable. I saw the previous notes from the Toronto group and conclude that they had a bad bottle. And probably at no fault to the winery. The only thing missing were a touch of acidic/tannic notes that I was searching for. Probably an indication of age. Great wine!
June 7, 2014 - Super Tasting 3 of 5; Going, going, back, back, to Cali, Cali (Maciej and Steve host a 1994 California Horizontal) (George, Toronto, ON): Served blind. Popped and poured. Deep garnet in colour. On the nose, dark fruits; smells purple; bubble gum, cough syrup, vanilla. Very simplistic, and overripe. On the palate, things follow suit, with hyper ripe fruits and tastes acidified, bringing it in to some semblance of balance. Easily the worst sound wine of the tasting. On reveal, expected a bit better out of this one.
June 7, 2014 - Year 2 - Super Tasting 3 of 5 - Maciej and Steve do 1994 Napa Cabernet (George Restaurant, Toronto, ON): Popped and poured, served blind
Ugh....simple ripe fruit, medicinal notes, cough syrup, and cotton candy.
Palate was WAY over the top....just too much, I don't like this style whatsoever.
Finish is hot and burns like cough syrup.
