December 19, 2022 - Briefly decanted for 15 minutes half bottles at a time. Bottle was in perfect condition. Purchased two bottles 3-4 years ago, opened one right after the purchase, which was good but young. Served double blind from a decanter. Much more expressive on the nose than 3-4 years ago. This wine seems to be already in a great drinking window now. No significant vintage characteristic of green stemmy nose. Tannins were present but pleasant. Very well balanced overall with good amount of fruit, acidity, structure. More elegant than powerful as expected from Le Chambertin in terms of concentration, but I like it quite a lot, especially the nose. I wish I have more bottles.
January 14, 2022 - Never received, like all of the 2011 Ilan!
July 29, 2021 - Red brick color with a slight haze and a small amount of sediment. Cork was in perfect shape. Profound aroma of dead wood/garrigue, cherry liqueur, roasted pecan, smoke, and nettles. Midweight mouthfeel, nice balance of tannins and acidity, but not intense or persistent. Medium finish with lingering tar and smoke. Followed for about 5 hours open with minimal change in character. 4+12+16+8= 90... which is a bit of a letdown for Grand Cru.
February 27, 2021 - Setting aside for a moment the travails of actually procuring this wine direct from Ray (sad/bizarre tale told at length elsewhere), it’s actually a really elegant and balanced wine. Specifically, beautiful earthy nose with a whiff of tabac. Dried cherry and pomegranate come through on the palate with delicious, chewy tannins on the finish. Too bad this venture tanked.
September 8, 2020 - Very similar to the '11 Ilan Charmes-Chambertin opened a few days earlier, albeit perhaps slightly inferior. This is fragrant and well-packaged but neither grand nor deep like one would expect from Chambertin. Better than expected, not flawed, and honestly not a terrible deal for the original price, if you can ignore all the Maison Ilan insanity. (That said, I'm not exactly searching for more.)
July 5, 2018 - Maison Ilan @ Medlar: Dark, dense ruby. A touch of lift. Very harmonious, densely silky. Attractive. A touch savoury on the nose. ****
February 1, 2018 - A surprise on the upside. Drank well for a youngster.
November 3, 2017 - Ripe, plummy, slightly muddled medium-weight fruit, with silky tannins, and that off-putting slightly spicy, slightly bitter backpalate note that mars a lot of 2011s. It's not bad enough to be undrinkable if you don't pay attention to it but but I did not enjoy this.
October 3, 2017 - Light but very tasty and well balanced. Not a fruit forward wine, but very good. Needs to open up before drinking
August 27, 2017 - Steak House Terroir (Leiden , NL): Ok his wines showed brilliantly when tasted from barrel but this bottle was lacking GC depth and power still a decent drink but not what you aspect from a Chambertin.
