November 1, 2019 - Tasted blind. This is a truly exceptional wine which changed its profile 10 times over a period of 4 hours. It’s highly complex, very precise, ever-changing and with great concentration, all embedded in an highly elegant structure. My guess was Sine Qua Non Syrah and I could hardly believe to see such a young Chave from such a structured vintage showing already this open and ready to go. There is potential for a perfect score once mature.

TN: Complex, changing nose with spices, meaty notes, dark fruit, herbal aromas, earthy tones, red fruit. Very harmonious and intellectually appealing. Incredibly complex and evolving aroma profile on the palate with strawberry candy, black and blue forest berries, sometimes pure, fresh fruit, then again liquory and sweet, spices, earth and stone aromas, herbs, first hints of tertiary development. The longer it sit in the glass the more intense it got and the darker and meatier the profile got. This is a dense wine but the weight doesn’t show with masses of fine tannins and a perfect acidity. Very harmonious and elegant.

Decanting: Ideally, I would not decant it for too long but follow it over a few hours as we did to grasp all the complexity and versatility of the wine.

August 16, 2019 - Jean-Louis Chave in person for E&R's 20th Anniversary, with 22 of his wines! (E&R Wine Shop, Portland OR): A little funky on the nose and it feels alive in the glass. Give it a few swirls and it softens up a bit and shows its more elegant side. It's nice; very composed and pretty. The palate is rich, soft, and impactful, but still tight, not revealing too much. Certainly lots of tannins build in the mouth and it gets quite tense as its held in the mouth. Bitter tannins attack on the finish, but it's so beautiful, elegant, and rich. Very pretty acidity goes a long way. This wine has wonderful composure but it needs a lot more time. This will be a spectacular Rouge!

June 14, 2019 - I don't ever remember having this vintage of Chave before, but this is just stunning. I just had an '09/10 Clape combo, and I've had the 09 Chave a number of times, so I'm sort of looking at this through that lens, and it's pretty analogous. There's not the overt power of 2009, and it's a far, far more graceful, detailed, and feminine wine than the '10 Clape, but it's got a somewhat similar soaring red fruit profile. Where this goes beyond any of those wines is that it has all of those classic Syrah elements, but they're married together rather than in competition. It's still a young wine, but it's neither raw nor aggressive in any way. Maybe the best Chave I can remember, and this will only get better.

December 23, 2018 - Great wine. Sour cherry, plums, violets , pepper and other savory notes. Long and smooth. Beautiful nose.
