April 9, 2024 - Massive concentration, much too young.

February 2, 2024 - Vinous Monfortino Dinner with Roberto Conterno; 2/1/2024-2/2/2024 (Legacy Records, NYC): I was blown away by how the '08 showed. This bottle was more expressive than the one I tasted back in November, and I have rated it higher.

The ‘08 was so different than the other Monfortino served, with intense aromatics and exotic fruit notes. I found a core of pure red cherry fruit and fresh red roses, similar to the other young wines, but with blood orange and other tropical fruits as an extra layer of complexity and vibrancy, along with some earthy notes of meat and truffle. On the palate, the '08 is one of the more refined vintages, with incredible sweetness of fruit, vibrant acidity, and almost no noticeable tannin. It's a very primary and exotic profile with red berry fruit, citrus peel, red florals, sweet spice, and raw meats, one of the more fruit-forward wines of the night, but still with a bit of savory complexity adding intrigue.

January 13, 2024 - Generously shared by my neighbor calling me over from a dinner party through a back door while i went with the garbage. Very high intensity nose, with dark berries and fruit, almost in a berryliquorish way, reflecting the extreme concentration. Some dried green herbs, licorice, and cooked down mushrooms.. Follows through on the palate, high concentration of quite primary dark berries/fruit, med alc, med++acid, med body. high tannins; suber refined of a classic nebbiolo character, with an unending fruit dominated finish.. A beautiful wine, with standalone power ingredients, yet so clean, elegant, precise and and with a clear direction. Outstanding quality, still developing and needs more time for the components to mellow together, but oh such a joy to drink now!

November 5, 2023 - Conterno vs Rinaldi; 11/4/2023-11/5/2023: The '08 Monfortino is an exotic, highly perfumed version of this wine. The '08 was an interesting contrast to the '99 served alongside it, showing more finesse and a purer, red-fruited flavor profile, but was a bit less intriguing (at least for now). As with the '99, the '08 continued to improve with air throughout the night.

On the nose, I found exotic, tropical fruit like blood oranges, pure red cherry fruit, dark red floral tones, tar, and a bit of sweet spice and espresso. On the palate, this is a very dense, concentrated wine. It is quite tannic, but the tannins are so refined, and the fruit is so dense, that you barely notice them. I found dark red cherry fruit, tar, red roses, sweet spices, and mint on the palate, which showed a bit more of a conventional Monfortino flavor profile than the exotic aromatics.

I would not hesitate to check in on an '08 Monfortino at this point, and with air the wine was stunning. This bottle was quickly double decanted around 2 PM, served at 8 PM, and continued to improve throughout the night.

September 4, 2023 - Drank last night in CO; didn't really decant; hints of metallic and lighter berries with loads of fine tannins that coat your teeth but don't leave you feeling as if they have dominated the experience; silky smooth after about 45 minutes, with a light viscosity (much lighter vs the 13 and 14 that I have had); all-in, an excellent bottle with room to run.
