March 4, 2024 - A strong showing, with excellent vigor despite is almost 30 years of age. Spicy, attractive bouquet with some earthy notes, showing more like an IGT with is purer expression of Sangiovese. It’s not a Pinot-like expression, it’s too dark and filled with tar for that, but it retains enough purity and elegance to highlight some of the more lithe aspects of the varietal. Holding well but in a great place, and all it seems to lack is the wild complexity I recall from former bottles. 92+ pts.

October 15, 2021 - Mini vertical with 94/95/96 Ugolaia on subsequent nights. Somewhat surprisingly the 94 is head and shoulders above the two following vintages.
94: Very aromatic with plenty of balsamic and even slightly medicinal notes. Round and soft fruit core, still juicy. Fine to medium tannins providing structure. No signs of oxidization. A wonderful Ugolaia. 93-94
95: A solid Brunello, clearly fresher than the tired 96. Compared to 94 fairly lean and much less aromatic. With more air a slightly oxidative note creeps in. A solid Brunello at the end of its drinking window. 90 - 91 (-)
96: Bottom neck fill, very good cork. Healthy garnet color with no browning. Muted nose upon opening. On the palate however this slightly oxidative note I am getting in mmost old Sangiovese. Little fruit left, leather. A touch of vegetable. Fine to medium tannins. This is at the end of the road. 88-89

July 13, 2021 - Italian Wine Dinner with Cedar (Oceanique - Evanston IL): Very earthy, seemingly getting tired. Much more enjoyable with food than on its own, with more flavor intensity coming through and its aged attributes lessening.

September 28, 2018 - Dekantert for å få vekk mye bunnfall.

January 21, 2017 - I don't know if this was corked or what -- it might have been. But the fruit was very tired and faded. It did have a very smooth, very nice texture and a faint taste of mushrooms. But generally very flat and uninteresting. I think there's a good chance it was corked but no smell/taste of TCA. Just posting as a counterpoint to all the good reviews.
