November 17, 2022 - '55/'61/'67 plus '61 Fontanafreda poured single blind. The stylistic consistency of the Mascarellos was amazing, from the pale, nearly translucent color down the the way the sediment was formed in large sheets. All of the wines showed propersly and for the most part were delicious. The '67 was the least impressive and clearly on the backside of maturity. Not madeirized, but it had a crystalline candied sweetness, almost like a tawny port. Interesting, but not up to the standard of the others, which were all impressive in their own way. The '61 drank the biggest and youngest (in a relative sense), but still ephemeral and elegant. The '55 was consistent with prior bottles; elegant, complex, and very alive for a 60+ year old wine. The Fontanafreda split the difference between the two, and was a massive over-performer. Three fantastic wines that were a treat to drink.

September 3, 2019 - Spice, sweet plum fruit, chocolate and earth. Very powerful on the palate while the high acidity lifted out its complex flavours.

December 6, 2018 - Truffle pop-up and good wine (Sabatino's Truffles on 54th Street): This was an interesting wine. The spice cabinet predominates at first, then you get some red fruits, then there's something in the mid-palate that just struck me as a touch off - and then it finishes quite nicely. Not sure what was going on.

November 26, 2018 - This was absolutely splendid. The first whiff is that of a rose garden. There's ripe raisin-like fruit and plenty of meat and bloody iodine traits, as well as some teak and Indian spices. It is rich, heady and powerful, with awesome perfume and presence. It is a strong wine but oh so beautiful and length is imposing.

June 16, 2018 - Expressive and complex aromas of teak, Indian spices, chocolate, burnt fig and leather. The palate is full, round rich and complete. It has vinous sweetness with plenty of savoury nuance. Structural elements play gently in the background and each sip offers up an array of engaging flavours. Length is excellent.
