March 9, 2020 - Blackish purple red in color with a nose of dark brambly fruit with some greenish elements, cedar, slight menthol and brown sugar with a very mild touch of oak. The palate is medium-bodied, still quite young at this juncture, dry despite the impression of sweetness on the nose, a touch of residual alcohol, very silk and creamy in texture but a bit too diluted or watery for my taste especially towards the middle and the finish. The flavor profile includes dark black and blue color fruits, brambly and herbaceous qualities, with a pretty stony earthy finish. Albeit young, I was a bit disappointed that this wine is not as intense, nuanced or serious as I was anticipating especially approaching the middle portion. An overall decent wine but definitely underwhelming at least this time around. In fact, this wine reminds me of a Bordeaux Superior on an above average vintage with a few years of cellaring time. Perhaps another 5 years will help? We’ll see.

November 29, 2019 - Hermitage Wines - Château Smith Haut Lafitte Trade Tasting: Medium ruby, and can see the slight fading edges from age. Aromas of roses, fern, red cherry, even some forest floor. High tannins, and some fresh acids. Cassis flavours, fern, cloves, nutmeg, and wet twigs. Lemgthy finish

November 20, 2019 - From Coravin. A compote of ripe blackberry, plums and blackcurrant, toast, cream, very slight wood glue and cedar. Similar fruit on the palate married to juicy (medium plus intensity) acidity, woody tannins close things down a bit and there is a touch of alcohol heat here. Hmm.

July 25, 2019 - First of the case. Very deep dark black cherry with only a very slight bit of lightening at the rim, but hardly any colour change. Distinct SHL nose. Black and red fruits, charred wood, pencil shavings with an extra dose of graphite. A bit of licorice emerges with air and more time in the glass. The fruits are all nicely ripe black currant, plum, black raspberry and are incredibly pure and fresh. Not a hint of tertiary aromas. The taste profile is classic SHL as well, bit from a cooler year. Medium bodied, very dry, medium high acidity. All of the same fruit flavours on the nose are on the palate as well, but this is somewhat lighter weight than the nose would suggest. Ot does but on some weight in the glass over time. The finish is full of puckery fruit replays and slightly astringent tannins. Quite a lovely, classically styled claret. Started out at 92 points but finished at 93 points.

(Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte (Pessac-Léognan)) This certainly has one of the most vibrant colours here. Bright fruit, dark and concentrated on the nose, although it borders on robust, with a smoked edge to it that makes me wonder about ripeness and extraction. The palate is supple, dense, creamy and feels very primary still, with a yeasty, whisky-mash element on the palate - just a winemaking hangover. Firm and boldly structured. I sense the fruit has been worked hard here, giving the wine this slightly warm and inky feel. The finish is rather stern though. This is very heavy on the structure at present, in this sample, nevertheless there is promise here.
