Community Tasting Notes 23

December 25, 2023 - From 75cl, fill into neck. Rotten cork, disintegrated into a mixture of dust and slime during a complicated root canal extraction using every tool short of port tongs. Wine unaffected(!) Opened but not decanted 2 hours, best in 3rd hour. Still dark coloured, not much bricking to rim. Intense healthy “barnyard”/horsesh*t scent, with subsidiary blackcurrant and tobacco ash; entry initially thin and acidic, but with sufficient dark fruit and gritty tannin gain on the mid-palate to make this an outstanding, if stern, palate cleansing, uncuddly St. Estèphe. Vibrant tannic finish. Given the vintage and the state of the cork, this felt like a small Christmas day miracle, and was my WOTN. 91P

April 9, 2022 - What a wonderful surprise! Immaculately stored bottle, although cork broke upon opening.

Typical Cos nose of green peppers. On the palate fruit was still present and tannins completely integrated. Did not require decanting as flavours were showing very well. The wine continued to open up over the course of 2hrs. I would think this will last another decade easily.

I was really impressed considering the vintage. Only challenge is to find another 1991 around!

July 18, 2019 - Bordeaux Night in the Santa Ynez Valley (An Anonymous Winery's Gorgeous Cellar Table): A lovely surprise, fully mature and a fascinating contrast with the 2012 Cos served alongside it. Classic notes of cherry, licorice, plum and spice, with a seamless texture and medium length finish.

July 14, 2017 - The vintage comes through but quite enjoyable, leather, strawberries, cedar and sandalwood, a positive surprise.
