Community Tasting Notes 4

April 5, 2024 - Tasted it at the Stag's Leap Wine Cellars during a private tasting event. Excellently aged and preserved! Plenty of fruit is still there (for a 40 year old wine). Lots of powerful tertiary (mushrooms, old wood, barn, leather) but nothing unpleasant.

December 22, 2023 - Double-decanted. Beautiful red and black currant fruit well-delineated by fresh acid open first opening. Structure and depth developed over three hours - really a profound wine and one of the best old-school Nape wines I’ve had. Incredibly fresh and vibrant and balanced for a 40 year-old wine. Stunning.

July 31, 2022 - Drank from magnum which was surprisingly youthful. Lots of old school Cabernet typicity with payrazines+oak spice presenting itself as shishido pepper. Definitely needed air to gain weight and for the nice red fruit profile to come out.

March 1, 2014 - At 4 PM I opened four bottles and decanted them to drink over the evening and with dinner. They were 1982 Chateau Margaux, 1983 Stags Leap, Stags Leap Vineyard, 1986 Caymus Special Selection and 1994 Costentino M. Coz. All were spectacular through 11 pm. The Stag's Leap was probably the most surprising in both it's finesse and it's subtle depth of flavor. The nose was not as forward as the Margaux nor as earthy but the flavor was richer and the aftertaste longer. The nose had lots of black raspberry, mint and vanilla. It was very similar to the Margaux in its character, being round and soft and feminine in structure. While not tannic at all, it had some remaining acidity that made it a bit more lively and the aftertaste of tart black raspberries and leather lasted a good 45 seconds. Awesome. Last bottle.
