June 29, 2018 - Beautiful, lush and expressive. Classic Napa cab. Perfectly aged.
August 14, 2017 - Fading medium ruby reddish translucently clear w/ ambering edges and fairly thick glycerin legs - so looks exciting like an old brunello. High-toned sour nose of stewed cherries and tomatoes along w a whiff of tobacco. Lively tartness -perhaps unbalancedly so - targets this ideally as a palate cleaning food wine (from California in 2001!!). Tastes as if a few red cherries were steeped in tomato water along w tea leaves and a bit of tobacco. AG's take on this in Vinous I think probably was based on a bad bottle as this bottle faithfully stored at 55 drinks freshly mature w idiosyncrasies for sure but no crazy flaws - another example of ideal v non-ideal cellaring?
July 15, 2015 - Medicinal and brisket on the nose, a bit hot as well.
Wax and lavender as well. Great legs......
Tight but not from tannins, just spicy tight, alcohol tight.
All Syrah....nothing right bank about this.....
A more than worthwhile wine experience........
June 23, 2015 - Very tannic. Just not good.
October 26, 2012 - Tight, but not sure of potential. Tannic ... Yet the acid seems to be building and the Syrah drowning out the merlot.
September 9, 2012 - Non-blind. Decanted 2 hrs. At Bistro au Miel, Yokohama.
Impression: Exquisitely outstanding.
Dark red with emerging nuances of maturity.
Nose w dark fruits galore.
Palate showing restraint and fantastic dark cherries including crushed pits. This is a mjuffingly great expression of pure fruit at its finest moment: in a mature wine extraordinaire. Still non-flamboyant and including the acids, tannins, body, length and complexities you meet only once in a while. "It's easy enough to be prudent when nothing tempts you to stray..." This is an ungodly assemblage and ungodly pleasurable :-)
Sadly, only bottle. Will live for quite some more years. Inspired us to open Ariettas 2007 release on Wednesday.
June 17, 2012 - consistent with my bottle of last November, this continues to show quite well. Meaty, with red currants and sweet, round tannins. Well balanced, serious wine that demands your attention. The last glass was the best. Strongly recommend at least an hour or more in a decanter to aerate. 14,1% abv, drink thru 2017
March 1, 2012 - merlot and syrah. all raspberry jam and cordial notes otn. luscious fruit, almost a sour cherry quality otp, some cherry notes on the finish.
February 11, 2012 - awesome nose, tannic and rusty
November 13, 2011 - PnP served just above cellar temp, over 2 hours. The color is still dark, but the aromas and palate confirm this is totally at peak right now and will likely remain here for several more years. My best experience to date with this wine given its focused purity and elegance. Black and blue fruits have just the right amount of spice and pepper that keep this fresh and complex. The Merlot component is noticeable at times, but I think the Syrah dominates and not in a bad way. Recommended, drink thru 2017, 14,1% abv, score: A-/A
